Panic gripped residents of the city today following the Park Plaza incident that hit the headlines. Many people who were availing privilege cards facilities of the five star hotel had been offered free stay for a single night in a year in the hotel.

Widow seeks security for NRI son

Having lost her husband in a murder a widow has urged the authorities to provide protection to the life of her NRI son who wishes to attend the bhog ceremony of his father but was scared of unknown killers. The police has assured security to the family members of the deceased.

159 power theft cases detected
Ludhiana, March 5
The Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) has detected 159 power theft cases this year. While the PSEB primarily focussed on the agricultural sector in January, this month it planned to conduct massive checking in the industrial sector, said Mr T.S. Mavi, Chief Engineer, Enforcement, PSEB, while addressing mediapersons here yesterday.

At the general body meeting of the Punjab and Sind Bank Staff Organisation held here today, association members condemned government’s stand on reduction of capital in banks, entry of foreign direct investment (FDI), merger of public sector banks and other economic policies.

Lord Jagannath’s rath yatra held

The Chandigarh branch of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) organised Lord Jaggannath’s 4th Rath Yatra in Gobindgarh today. Hundreds of ISKON devotees from all parts of the country and abroad had come for the Yatra and it looked like a real cosmopolitan affair.

Cash, cellphone snatched
Jagraon, March 5
Unknown persons allegedly snatched Rs 7000 in cash along with mobile phone and other documents from Tarsem Singh son of Sardara Singh of Overlock Road, Miller Ganj Ludhiana near Tusse village at gun point. Sudhar police on the complaint of the victim has registered a case under section 382, 34 the IPC. No arrest has been made.

A seminar on “Technology upgradation and modernisation of SSI foundries” was conducted by the Small Industries Development Institute, under the government’s Cluster Development Programme, for the sewing machine industry here yesterday.

PAU scientists upbeat over BT cotton 
Ludhiana, March 5
There is enthusiasm among scientists in the Punjab Agricultural University over the approval of the centre for the use of cotton in the state. The BT cotton which is already being used in southern and western states is expected to generate lot of yield in Punjab and other northern states as well.

PAU fair impresses Zambian delegation
Ludhiana, March 5
Deputy High Commissioner of Zambia, Lt Col Chongo Shula accompanied by secretary in the Zambian High Commiss was impressed with the agricultural fair organised by the Punjab agricultural University. The Zambian diplomat said, he was quite impressed by the close cooperation between the university and the farmers.

Degrees conferred on 199 at IGNOU convocation
Khanna, March 5
Standard of education in the state especially in government schools was going down stated by Mr S.S. Johl, Vice-Chairman, Punjab State Planning Board and chief guest of the convocation of regional centre in Khanna of Indira Gandhi National Open University at a press conference on university campus today. He said there were enough funds for the education but these were not being used properly.

Dharamsot gives grants to schools

Under Sarav Sikhya Abhiyan, cheques worth Rs 75 lakh were given to government elementary schools by Mr Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, Parliamentary Secretary (Home Justice and PWD), at a district-level function held at Government Elementary School, Saincy Behra, today.

The prize distribution function of Arya College was held here today. It was presided over by Mr Balraj Bhasin, associated with educational institutions. The function was preceded by a invocation to the Almighty and a Yajna was organised to inaugurate the renovated auditorium of the college.

Teachers’ unions urged to unite
Khamano, March 5
The Government Teachers’ Union has appealed to all teachers unions to come together on one platform to oppose the imposition of mid-day meal scheme. Stating his block President of the union Jagtar Singh Khamano, district vice-president Sukhwinder Chahal and Surjit Singh Sohi said they would call a district-level meeting of all teacher unions to chalk out next course of action.
