Bandh in Bhajan’s constituency
Hisar, March 5 Some supporters of Mr Bhajan Lal burnt two buses at the local bus stand while rail traffic was obstructed at Adampur late last night. Due to the disruption of rail traffic, the Kisan Express was stranded at the local railway station for more than two hours. The Delhi-Hisar national highway No 10 was also blocked in Hansi. The police personnel had to use force to disperse Mr Bhajan Lal’s sypathisers. Around six persons, including some Youth Congress activists, were injured in the police lathi-charge. As soon as supporters of Mr Bhajan Lal learnt that Mr Hooda had been named Chief Minister by the Congress high command, they went on a rampage, causing an extensive damage to public property. Barriers at several railway crossings were broken by the mob. Most shops and other commercial establishments remained closed today in response to the bandh call given by the Congress members backing Mr Bhajan Lal. The bus service was also hit as a result of the bandh call. Some women supporters burnt the effigies of the Congress president, Ms Sonia Gandhi, at three places in the constituency. Besides, many Congress workers took off party flags from their rooftops as a mark of protest. The record of a mini-bank at Khara Barwala village in Adampur constituency was damaged today in continuation of the protest demonstration. Mr Bhajan Lal’s supporters also damaged two buses parked at the Adampur bus stand. |
Hooda’s appointment welcomed
Sonepat, March 5 The Haryana Jat Mahasabha has thanked Congress President Sonia Gandhi for Mr Hooda’s appointment, according to the vice-president of the mahasabha, Mr Ranbir Chaudhary. KARNAL: Sikhs have also welcomed the decision. The president of the Haryana Sikh Sangat, Jathedar Surjit Singh, said the decision was in the interests of the state and would lead to a clean administration. A wave of jubilation swept Sainik School, Kunjpura, from where Mr Hooda passed out in December, 1962. Commander L.K. Jain, officiating Principal of the school, said,” It is a moment to feel proud for the staff and students of the school.” PANIPAT: The BJP state President, Mr Ganeshi Lal, welcomed the appointment of Mr Hooda and hoped that he would provide a clean administration in the state.
Meanwhile, Mr Hooda was welcomed at several places in Panipat and Sonepat districts on his way from Delhi to Chandigarh on Saturday. A large number of his supporters waited for him for several hours at different places on the highway to garland him and to present bouquets. |
Hooda’s supporters increase in number Panchkula, March 5 Not only did Mr Hooda’s supporters increase in number, but a large number of Congress men accompanied former City Congress chief and Mr Hooda’s supporter, Mr Krishan Nanha, to receive the new Chief Minister at Zirakpur. So even as the supporters of Mr Bhajan Lal continued to sulk and express their resentment, a number of leaders and Congress councillors joined hands with Mr Hooda’s supporters here. The changeover in the Congress has also meant that the Panchkula Municipal Council will not be disbanded. While Mr Bhajan Lal’s son and local MLA, Chander Mohan was in favour of the local body being disbanded, the Hooda camp here is in favour of the council. Mr Krishan Nanha, a close confidant of Mr Hooda and husband of councillor, Anita Aggarwal, today said the council should remain as it would lead to further development of Panchkula. He, however, said the MC President, Ms Seema Chaudhary, should resign as she had lost the mandate of councillors in the MC House. “She should have sent her resignation after the Vidhan Sabha results were declared and the INLD lost at the hustings,” he said. When questioned on who should be the next MC President, Mr Nanha said it was for the party high command to decide. Mr Nanha, while saying that Mr Hooda was a honest leader, said as against the belief that Panchkula would be ignored for development by Mr Hooda, he said this was not possible, considering that Panchkula was an important district. Meanwhile, Mr K.P. Singh, senior Vice-President of the Congress here, too, welcomed the AICC President’s decision of appointing Mr Hooda as the Chief Minister. “ We had sought votes on the issue of development of Panchkula and providing more job opportunities to the youth here. We will take up the matter with Mr Hooda and ensure that there was rapid pace of development in Panchkula,” he said. |

Return of freedom for Haryana MLAs!
Chandigarh, March 5 By having Bhajan Lal to attend the swearing in ceremony of Bhupinder Singh Hooda as Chief Minister today, the Congress’s central leadership tried to send across the message that the state unit of the party was united. Murmurs of discontent, though, could be heard all the same. A pro-Bhajan Lal MLA, just before leaving for Raj Bhavan to attend the function, accosted a reporter with the complaint that it had been erroneously written that 20 MLAs had stayed away from the CLP meeting yesterday in which Hooda was elected the Chief Minister. If he was to be believed, 22 MLAs had stayed away (a neutral MLA, however, said in reality it was 20 MLAs only as two MLAs left the Bhajan Lal camp and went to attend the CLP meeting). Two other MLAs also did not hide their reservation about the choice of the CLP leader. That a grand welcome ceremony for Hooda was being organised close by and a number of staunch Hooda supporters were within earshot did not prevent these MLAs from airing their views. At the venue of the ceremony, a senior Congress MLA said he would not join the Hooda-led ministry because the CM was his junior in politics. However, if the post of Speaker was offered to him, he would give it a thought. The Congress leader went on to claim that till about 2.45 pm yesterday, he was the front-runner for the CM’s post. The calculations, he claimed, got upset due to Bhajan Lal’s decision to stay away from the CLP meeting. All this, while indicating that Hooda has a challenging task before him, was a welcome change from the previous regime when Chautala kept MLAs as well as ministers under a tight leash and hardly gave them any real power. |
