Stage set for battle royal

The build up to the first cricket Test match between India and Pakistan, starting on March 8, reached a feverish pitch today with the arrival of the Indian team here late afternoon and the Pakistan team is scheduled to reach Chandigarh tomorrow morning.

National Environment Policy to be formulated soon

The much awaited National Environment Policy will soon be a reality. After many deliberations, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has forwarded the policy draft which will serve as the first-ever baseline document encompassing all aspects related to environment in India.

If allegations levelled by a city resident are to be believed, then the Chandigarh police violated the directions issued by the Supreme Court by picking up her husband, after reaching their house, in plain clothes.

A post-mortem examination has failed to ascertain the cause of the death of Sanjeev Kumar, the victim of alleged torture by two policemen of the Chandigarh police. The post-mortem examination was conducted by a panel of two doctors in the General Hospital today, the police said here.Suman Dutta

Religious structures around dumping ground to be demolished

More than a dozen religious structures located around the dumping ground in Dadumajra will be demolished in the coming week. This was announced by the Municipal Corporation in an official press release here today.

Rs 17 lakh to be recovered from MC for flouting rules

The Haryana Government has approved and accepted the inquiry report regarding financial irregularities in the Panchkula Municipal Council. The government has asked the Urban Development Department , Haryana to initiate the recovery of losses from the council president, staff and contractors hired for maintenance works.

A local court today ordered to get the medical examination of Ashish Kumar, who was arrested with 2 gram of charas in Burail Jail, yesterday. The order followed the allegations of the petitioner’s counsel that Ashish was tortured in police custody.

Man stabbed to death
Chandigarh, March 5
An altercation over the payment of wage led to the murder of a palledar in the Sector 26 Grain Market, late last night. Jaspal Singh (20) was stabbed in chest by his four co-workers in the market publicly, he was rushed to the PGI where the doctors declared him brought dead.

Woman ends life

Shattered by the death of her three-month-old son, a mother allegedly ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling at her house in Sector 22 here today.

Charas, liquor seized
Chandigarh, March 5
The Barotiwala police has seized 920 gram of charas from three motor-cycle-borne youth here last night. The motor cycle coming from the Nalgarh side was asked to stop at a naka put by the police party led by Harjeet Singh at around 9.25 p.m. The youth tried to reverse the motor-cycle but failed.

Chandigarh, March 5
As many as 309 students were given awards today at the 23rd annual prize distribution function of the Government College for Girls, Sector 42. Mr Dilip Kumar, Joint Secretary (Finance)-cum-director, Public Instruction (Colleges), Chandigarh Administration, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Judicial custody for burglary accused
Panchkula, March 5
The two accused in the serial burglary case at Pinjore — Omvir and Rakesh — have been remanded to judicial custody. The police had claimed that they were adults and demanded their police custody for five days. However, the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr Gulab Singh, denied police remand, saying the accused appeared to be juveniles. The police had also attached the medical report of the accused, which showed that they were over 18 years, which was not accepted by the court.

A Kharar court today reserved its order in the case relating to the right of the Punjab Cricket Association to issue passes for the forthcoming Test between India and Pakistan.

64-yr-old lawyer remanded for rape bid
Chandigarh, March 5
A 64-year-old man allegedly attempted to rape a 10-year-old girl, living in his neighbourhood at Kendriya Vihar, Sector 48, last evening. The accused, Nasib Singh, a lawyer, was caught by the parents of the victim and handed over to the police.
