Training programme for PGI docs

Chandigarh, March 5
A training programme on the medical certification of the cause of death was organised by the Department of Biostatistics in collaboration with the Department of Community Medicine for the resident doctors at the PGI on Thursday. The PGI’s Medical Superintendent, Dr A.K. Gupta, inaugurated the programme and explained the importance of mortality statistics.

Camp concludes

Mohali, March 5
A two-day no scalpel vasectomy camp organised by the Ranbaxy Community Healthcare Society (RCHS) in association with the ESI Hospital concluded here today.

As many as 33 men underwent surgeries which were done by Dr K.S. Kang. The Surgeries were special as no cut or stitches were required.

Dr Upma Sharma of the RCHS said in a press note that the aim of holding the camp was to motivate men in this regard rather than asking their wives to undergo tubectomy which involved more risk. The camp was inaugurated by Dr D.S. Virk, Director, Health Services, Punjab. — OC

Balkar in semis of A.K.Misra boxing championship

Balkar Singh of Punjab beat S. Hemanth of Pondichery under the heavyweight category to reach the semifinal of the 12th All-India Invitation A.K. Misra Memorial Boxing Championship organised at Skating Rink, Sector 10, here today. Mr O.P. Bhardwaj, Dronacharya awardee,was the guest of honour. Apart from the 26 Indian teams of national and international repute a 10-member Mauritius National boxing team is also taking part in the competition.

The quarterfinal results:

Heavyweight: Anupam Misra (MAH) beat Pankaj Sharma (UBC); Ramesh Kumar (HAR) beat Raj Kumar Singh (BEN). Middleweight: K. Sanjit Singh (AR) beat M Danaian (ASI); Vijay Kumar (UP) beat Anand Singh (AP); Didar Singh (PEPSU) beat Harinder Kumar (PUN).Welterweight: Prabhakar (AP) beat Gaurav Jain (PEPSU); Bhupender Dalal (HAR) beat Raj Kumar (PUN); Suranjeet (AR) beat Inderpal Singh (MP); Pradeep Kumar (DEL) beat Gaurav Singh (UTR).

Raveen, Bajaj in doubles final of inter-media badminton

Teams of the Hindustan Times and the Press Club will clash in the final of the ongoing Hutch Inter-Media Badminton Tournament.
The tournament, which is being organised by the Chandigarh Press Club, has attracted participation by over 24 players. Mobile service company Hutchison Essar is sponsoring the tournament. The pair of Raveen Thukral and Ajay Bajaj, both from the Hindustan Times, will clash with the pair of Rajesh Deol and Rajinder Chawla.

Jaswinder Kaur of Dainik Bhaskar will lock horns with her colleague Sandhya Ray Choudhary in the women’s singles final.

Jaswinder Kaur and Rajni Sharma will match their skills against the pair of Prachi Arora and Sandhya Ray Choudhary for the Hutch Winner’s Trophy in the women’s double’s category.

In a match played today, Raveen Thukral and Ajay Bajaj got better of their colleagues from the Hindustan Times, Prem Nanda and Anil Arora, 15-8, 15-2. The Pair of Rajesh Deol (the Deccan Herald) and Rajinder Chawla (the Press Club) also faced no problems in defeating Harish Lakhanpal (The Tribune) and Sunil Dutta (the Press Club) in straight sets 15-11, 15-7.

Prem Nanda and Anil Arora outplayed Maneesh Chhibber and Rohit Awasthi (The Tribune) 15-9, 15-8 yesterday.

In the men’s singles category, Rajinder Chawla (Press Club) defeated Tejinder Sehgal (Dainik Jagran) 15-0, 15-1, while Rajesh Deol had to struggle a lot to defeat Indepreet Singh (Dainik Jagran) 15-11, 15-14.

Prabhjit Singh (UNI) registered a win against Rakesh Patial (The Indian Express). The score was 15-11, 15-10. Rajinder Singh Nagahkoti (Dainik Jagran) also made it to the next round by defeating Surinder Singh (Financial World) 15-10, 15-6.

Meanwhile, Mohinder Kumar defeated Sanjay Kumar to emerge the winner in the category of Press Club employees. He scored a 15-2, 15-8 victory over his opponent.

Finals in the men’s singles, doubles, women’s singles and doubles will be played tomorrow and the prize distribution function will be held at 8 pm on the same day.

PANCHKULA
Cricket meet: The Ind-Swift Group Second Anil Jain Memorial Cricket Tournament will start at Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium, Sector 3, Panchkula, on Sunday. Twelve teams are participating. The tournament will be played till April 10.
