CM to open bridge on Sutlej tomorrow

The Chief Minister. Mr Virbhadra Singh, will dedicate the Rs 8.50-crore Maitri-Setu bridge built by the NTPC over the Sutlej connecting remote villages in the two districts of Mandi and Bilaspur to local residents at Harnora, 70 km from here, on February 26.

CPM to launch campaign against MoU
Shimla, February 24
The CPM has decided to launch a statewide campaign against the MoU on fiscal reforms signed by the state government with the Centre to apprise the common man with its different aspects.

Left parties to oppose patent ordinance

Left parties and its affiliated trade union organisations will organise meetings all over the state on February 26 against the new patent ordinance issued by the Central Government.

Labourer beaten to death, 1 held
Solan, February 24
A labourer from Jharkhand, Oscar Bange (30), was allegedly beaten to death by another labourer, Vinod Kumar (31), late last night after both of them quarrelled over some issue at a quarter of the latter at Billawale village near the Baddi industrial area.

Three held for murder
Nalagarh, February 24
The police here claimed to have solved the murder of Jaipaal (20) of Thana village in Nalagarh sub-division. Bara Singh of Mansuha village of Ropar district and Pritpaal Singh of Pehna villages near Balachaur in Punjab were arrested on Monday evening from respective village. Rampal of Thana village in Nalagarh was also arrested.

Hoteliers in the area had never had it so good. There has been a sudden rush in the hotel business with two important events, the India-Pakistan cricket match and teachings of the Dalai Lama, being held in Dharamsala and McLeodganj.

With the teachings formally kicking off today, most hotels in McLeodganj are already jam-packed. More than 8,000 devotees are attending the sessions and nearly 90 per cent of these are tourists.

In Dharamsala as well, business is looking up as more than 2,000 fans are expected from the other side of the border, besides thousands of Indian fans. Since hotels in McLeodganj are booked, hoteliers in Dharamsala are optimistic of getting all the business.

Mr Prakash Choudhary of a hotel in McLeodganj said occupancy had shot up in almost all hotels, as it is not less than 75 per cent anywhere. “Not just hotels, even restaurants and other businessmen are making good money as there are tourists all over the place,” he says.

CM to open bridge on Sutlej tomorrow

Mandi, February 24
The Chief Minister. Mr Virbhadra Singh, will dedicate the Rs 8.50-crore Maitri-Setu bridge built by the NTPC over the Sutlej connecting remote villages in the two districts of Mandi and Bilaspur to local residents at Harnora, 70 km from here, on February 26.

According to the NTPC release the bridge will be thrown open for the traffic that will end the age-old miseries of the villagers who will now have an easy access across the river. Earlier the villagers used to cross the river on jhulas.

The release stated that the bridge would reduce the distance from 15 to 20 km between the villages of Dhawal, Ropa, Kyan, Aahan Sanihan (Mandi side) and Harnora, Nehar, Devla Chhamb, Boht-Kasol and Chamyon (Bilaspur side).

The release said that the 160-metre-long and 10-metre-wide bridge had two spans and was completed in the record time of less than a year.

CPM to launch campaign against MoU

Shimla, February 24
The CPM has decided to launch a statewide campaign against the MoU on fiscal reforms signed by the state government with the Centre to apprise the common man with its different aspects.

In a statement issued here today, the CPM leader, Mr Tikender Singh Panwar, said that a state-level workshop would be held here on February 26 to deliberate on various aspects of the MoU and expose the Congress as well as the BJP on the issue. The state committee of the CPM met here yesterday to discuss the various aspects of the MoU.

The CPM also criticised the government for being intolerant over the issue of temple in Santokhgarh in Una district.

Labourer beaten to death, 1 held

Solan, February 24
A labourer from Jharkhand, Oscar Bange (30), was allegedly beaten to death by another labourer, Vinod Kumar (31), late last night after both of them quarrelled over some issue at a quarter of the latter at Billawale village near the Baddi industrial area. Both of them were in an inebriated condition. Bange, who hails from Rasia district in Jharkhand, was hit hard on his neck, shoulder and the mouth by a platter.

This is the second murder in the Baddi industrial area in less than a week.

A neighbour, Amrita Devi, who overheard the arguments between the two came to Vinod’s room and found him running away with the platter. The labour colony has no electricity connection. She, however, managed to see Oscar lying in the pool of blood and immediately informed the contractor, Surinder Kumar. Lalu, another roommate of Vinod, was also lying alongside in a drunken state. Surinder Kumar, who arrived at 3 a.m. informed the police about the murder from a nearby PCO.

Labourer murdered

Baddi, February 24
In another murder case a migrant labourer was brutally murdered with a griddle (tawa) by another labourer at Billowali village near here late last night.

Oscar Baghe (30) from Rihisiya village under Kolevira police station, Simtega district, Jharkhand, was repeatedly hit on his head with a griddle by Vinod Kumar (31) till he succumbed to his injuries. Both of them were drinking liquor along with other labourers in a labourers’ colony when an argument over some matter led to a fight between them leading to the murder.

After committing the crime Vinod fled from the scene but was later arrested. OC

Rampal of Thana village in Nalagarh was also arrested.

The deceased returning home after work in factory G. Claridge on his bicycle was stopped by three motor-cycle borne youths near Morepan laboratories on the Nalagarh-Baddi road on Saturday. He was stabbed several till he died. The trio then fled towards Nalagarh but abandon their vehicle as it met with an accident 2 km from the murder site. The police details the motor cycle (PB-12-C-2105) and arrested Bara Singh and Pritpaal Singh.

Police officials said the deceased and Rampaal had bitter relations as the former had been teasing the daughter of Rampaal’s elder brother.

Pritpaal and Bara Singh are under treatment at a Nalagarh hospital.

One held for selling liquor

Baddi, February 24
Nalagarh police arrested Labh Singh from Datwal village for selling liquor yesterday. The police raided Labh Singh’s house and recovered 17 bottles of rum and 38 bottles of country liquor from his possession. A case under Section 61/1/14 of the Excise Act was registered.

A man was booked under the Gambling Act. He was nabbed from Kundlo village while operating satta trade. Satta slips and Rs 340 were recovered from him.

Poppy husk seized

Nalagarh, February 24
The police recovererd 30 kg of poppy husk from Gurcharan Singh of Makodikala village in Ropar district during checking of his residential premises at Bhaganpura village.

A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against him. OC
