Ajay Chautala to contest from Bhiwani
Our Correspondent

Fatehabad, January 25
The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) will renominate Dr Sushil Indora, MP from the Sirsa parliamentary constituency, to contest from this seat in the coming parliamentary elections. Mr Ajay Singh Chautala, president of the youth wing of the party and MP from Bhiwani, said this in reply to a question while talking to mediapersons here today.

Mr Ajay Singh had come here to address a meeting of the youth wing of the party. Fatehabad district is part of the Sirsa parliamentary constituency and Dr Indora is a local resident. Mr Ajay Singh also denied rumours regarding his intention to shift his constituency and clarified that he would contest from the Bhiwani parliamentary constituency only.

Brushing aside the challenges posed to him by HVP leader Surender Singh and Congress leader Kuldeep Bishnoi from Bhiwani, he said these leaders had posed similar challenges earlier, too, but were forced to bite the dust. He ridiculed the claim made by the Haryana Vikas Party secretary-general Surender Singh that his party would win from all 10 constituencies in Haryana. He said the HVP was a “spent force” and the Congress was a house divided, hence his party would not face any serious challenge in the coming polls.

The INLD leader said his party would field candidates in four states — Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. On the issue of poll alliance with any party, he said the party had authorised the Chief Minister Mr Om Prakash Chautala, in this regard.

Earlier, addressing a convention of the youth wing of the party at Rangoli Resorts here, Mr Ajay Singh said youth workers of the INLD had not only been serving the people on the political front but also on the social front.

Addressing party workers, the Finance Minister, Mr Sampat Singh, said the image of INLD had been able to give right direction to the youths.

Come poll, INLD govt on recruitment spree

Chandigarh, January 25
The Haryana Government, which had been talking of downsizing( or rightsizing as it preferred to call the exercise) the bureaucracy till the other day, is now on a recruitment spree, obviously in view of the coming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

With the professed aim of reducing the rising salary bill and burden on the public exchequer, a large number of employees working in certain corporations and boards were retrenched. A large number of employees, who were declared surplus, were transferred from one department to another.

However, now the government has asked various departments, corporations and boards to notify vacant posts so that jobs can be offered. It may be mentioned the government recently made it mandatory that all vacancies even in the autonomous corporations and boards should be filled through the State Subordinate Services Commission.

The state government has now decided to fill over 100 posts in the HCS(Executive Branch) and other allied services. The Haryana Public Service Commission has already invited applications for 102 such posts including 58 of the HCS, eight of DSP and 21 of Excise and Taxation Officer.

The commission has invited applications for these posts before February 23 well before the Lok Sabha elections.

Since the posts are open to residents belonging to the other states also, the opposition fears these can be used by the INLD to lure voters in those states where it is planning to contest the Lok Sabha elections.

HVP to go it alone

Pataudi (Gurgaon), January 25
The HVP today announced that it would contest all 10 parliamentary seats alone in the state in the coming general election, scotching all possibilities of its electoral alliance with any political party in the process.

The HVP supremo and former state Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, who addressed a public meeting here, however evinced keen interest in the emerging configuration of the possible non-Congress and non-BJP third front at the national level. He said the HVP would support only that conglomeration at the Centre which would promise to look after interests of Haryana.

Mr Bansi Lal’s, utterances come in the wake of speculations in certain quarters on the issue of alliance. With the state unit of the BJP lobbying with its central leadership to sever ties with the ruling INLD in the state, the debate on possible HVP-BJP alliance had been open-ended.

He declared his party’s stand that it would give tickets to only those persons who were locals of the constituencies concerned. He promised to scrap the Halwai tax, bring down the power tarrif, re-introduce slab system for collection of power tarrif on tubewells, work out a policy for self-employment, put a moratorium on arrests of farmers regarding collection of arrears from them on bank loans and exempt those from house taxes who had constructed residences in urban areas for their personal use.

Burail jailbreak: high alert in Panipat
Our Correspondent

Panipat, January 25
Intelligence agencies and the police have been put on high alert in the city keeping in view the escape of the three accused involved in the assassination of the former Chief Minister of Punjab, Beant Singh, from the Model Jail, Burail, three days ago. The accused, Jagtar Singh Hawara, Jagtar Singh Tara and Paramjit Singh, escaped from the jail by digging a tunnel.

Sources said whenever the police of the neighbouring states including Delhi, UP, Punjab and Chandigarh carried out raids and increased surveillance there, the accused preferred to shift to Panipat. The city has emerged as a safe haven for criminals due to its proximity to Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. During the militancy days, the city had become a centre of militants, activities in Haryana, the sources added.

The presence of the anti-social element in the city is also evident from the past experience. The city had witnessed a bomb blast in the bus at the bus stand which had caused death of seven persons in 1997. Another bomb blast had taken place in the Muri Express in 1998 and in 1999 the police had disposed of an RDX bomb at Red Light Chowk. Apart from this, contract killings and dacoity cases have become a routine in the city. Recently, with the arrest of two ISI agents from Yamunanagar and Sonepat, intelligence agencies have been asked to increase surviellance in the sensitive areas.

The situation has become serious due to the presence of thousands of illegal Bangladeshi migrants employed in the handloom industry. They are posing a threat to national security, reveal intelligence sources.

Surveillance has been increased on the G.T. Road, around bus stand, railway station and handloom factories.
