Vedanti to mediate in sacrilege issue

Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti has agreed to step in to resolve the long-pending issue of Nanaksar Ashram Thath at Siahar regarding the control of the religious place, provided both factions agree to accept his arbitration.

Good scope for trade in Iraq, says expert

BKU state-level dharna tomorrow

The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) will hold a state-level dharna at the PSEB headquarters in Patiala on January 27 in protest against the erratic power supply to the farm sector. Farmers in large numbers are expected to take part in the dharna from all over the state.

Drive against encroachment a damp squib
Ludhiana, January 25
Launched with much hype amidst high expectations, the campaign to remove more than 9000 encroachments on municipal and government land in the city has virtually fizzled out. This can be attributed to political interference, particularly due to the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

Labourers not satisfied with pact, says union
Ludhiana, January 25
The local Moulder and Steel Workers Union has said there was unrest among the labour unions in the city since most of their grievances had not been redressed. Mr Mahendra Singh, the secretary of the union, said though the administration had managed to have a truce between the labour unions and the managements of various establishments, the labourers were not satisfied with the agreement as the problems which led to the strike remained unaddressed.

Merger of DA with pension sought
Ludhiana, January 25
The Government Pensioners’ Association today urged the Prime Minister and the Union Finance Minister to merge 50 per cent DA with the basic pay/pension in line with the recommendations of the Fifth Central Pay Commission.

J&K Govt’s effigy burnt
Ludhiana, January 25
Activists of the Shiv Sena (Hindustan) took out a protest march and burnt the effigy of the Jammu and Kashmir Government. They were protesting against arrest of party functionaries at Lakhanpur barrier in Jammu and Kashmir. The party members who have been arrested were leading a “rath yatra” to Srinagar.

MLA inaugurates water supply scheme

The Congress MLA, Mr Surinder Dawar, initiated a drinking water supply scheme in Issa Nagri and surrounding localities of Ward No. 51 here yesterday. The project will cost Rs 3.5 lakh approximately.

Three thieves held, ornaments recovered
Ludhiana, January 25
The police today claimed to have solved several theft cases with the arrest of three members of a gang involved in stealing ornaments from religious places. Vijay Kumar and Krishan Kumar, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, and Shankar Singh of Bihar, were arrested and stolen ornaments and cash seized from their possession.

Four booked on dowry charge
Khanna, January 25
The police has registered a case against four residents of Jalandhar on the charges of demanding dowry. The case has been registered on the complaint of Jaskiran Kaur.

Ludhiana City Jaycees organised an inter-school painting competition at Tagore Public School here today. More than 100 students from various schools, including GGN Public School, Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, Tagore Public School, RS Model School, BCM School, DAV School and Sacred Heart School, Sarabha Nagar, participated.

Inter-state  knitting contest for students
Ludhiana, January 25
More than two lakh students from over 1,100 schools from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Chandigarh are expected to take part in “aao bune” knitting contest to be organised by the Vardhman Spinning and General Mills for the third consecutive year.

Cremica organised a health and hygiene quiz at Spring Dale Senior Secondary School here yesterday. The major topics covered in the quiz were included human anatomy, social health balanced diet, food, diseases and their prevention and general cleanliness. Some local doctors had helped in preparation for the quiz.

Seeded players had a smooth sailing on the second day of the Hibird Cycles Ludhiana District Badminton Championship being held at Guru Nanak Sports Complex here today. Pranav Chopra, Anand Tiwari, Gurrattanvir Singh and Makhak Singh in the boys’ singles (u-13) while in the doubles’ the pairs of Gurrattanvir Singh and Anand Tiwari and that of Guarish and Bhavya Dawar, Anatarpreet Singh and Ikagarjot Singh and Shubham and Saibi won the matches to enter the next rounds.

Warm send-off for dist sports officers
Ludhiana, January 25
A warm send-off was accorded to Mr Avtar Singh and Mr Harpal Singh, district sports officers of Fatehgarh Sahib and Bathinda, respectively, at a function organised here last evening at the Guru Nanak Stadium.
