Hooda lashes out at Badal Chandigarh, July 5 In a statement here today, Mr Hooda said Mr Badal was getting frustrated as there were alleged cases of corruption against him and his family members, in which the probe was being carried out by Punjab Vigilance sleuths. Mr Hooda said that by charging Ms Sonia Gandhi as anti-Sikh, Mr Badal was trying to divert the attention of the masses from the main issue of corruption. He said it was because of the secular policies of Ms Gandhi that the in Punjab gave a clear verdict in people favour of the Congress in the last Assembly elections. Referring to a statement issued by Mr
L.K. Advani, Union Home Minister, in favour of Mr Badal, Mr Hooda said that it was surprising that Mr Advani had not uttered a word till date about Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala’s policy of implicating his political rivals in false cases. The Congress leader added that Mr Advani, who could remember the days he had spent in the Rohtak jail during Emergency, had conveniently forgotten all about the Supreme Court judgement on SYL canal given last year. Mr Hooda warned both BJP and Akali leaders against making inflammatory statements. |
Saran’s police remand extended Ambala, July 5 Earlier on July 1, Duty Magistrate N.K. Singhal had granted four-day police custody to them. On June 25, the Haryana State Vigilance Bureau had arrested Sharan on the basis of an FIR registered in April 2002 in Ambala City police station for sanctioning loan to certain industrialists from Haryana Financial Corporation. The public prosecutor filed an application in the court today seeking the police remand of the duo for five days. The prosecutor said that the Vigilance Bureau had inspected all 37 files related to the loans given to various beneficiaries during the period when Sharan had been holding the chair of Managing Director of the HFC. The counsel of Sharan said that the Vigilance had already taken the police remand of their client for nine days and the bureau authorities had failed to get any new information from him. Moreover none of the beneficiaries had been arrested by the vigilance so far in this case, they said.

Bansi against sending troops to Iraq Jhajjar, July 5 At a press conference during his visit to the Salawas constituency today, Mr Bansi Lal said the USA was still providing Pakistan with diplomatic and material support, even though it had been exporting terrorism to India. The former Chief Minister of Haryana also objected to the procedure for admission to the MBBS and PG courses in the PGI in Chandigarh and sought a CBI inquiry into this. On the issue of the proposed hike in the cost of higher
education, Mr Bansi Lal said the state government was increasing the fee on pretext of following certain rulings of the Supreme Court. He said it was foolish to expect law and order in the state under the rule of Mr Om Prakash Chautala. He also opposed the implementation of VAT in Haryana, as the other states had not introduced it. Mr Bansi
Lal said his party would like to go it alone in the next assembly elections and it was confident of forming the government. |

Khadi board hires warehouses Chandigarh, July 5 From being primarily a lending outfit for rural entrepreneurs, the board has extended its activities to function as a consignment agency. An official said that its operations as a consignment agent for items supplied by four corporations had helped the board net Rs 22.17 lakh as profit. While the word profit may ring a wrong chord for old guards, it was learnt that the money generated from the agency business had come at a time when the board had run into the red and depended heavily on government grants for its sustenance. The official said it was decided last July that the board would function as a consignment agent for goods supplied by the Hindustan Zinc Corporation, Hindustan Copper Limited, Starlight India Limited and the Mines and Mineral Trading Corporation (MMTC). Warehouses had been hired by the board at Faridabad, Hisar and Chandigarh for storing goods of these corporations. It receives money from the parties to whom the consignments have been sent. “Both major as well as small industries are our clients and they receive their supply of raw material like copper, zinc and other metals through us”, the official said and added that some of the staff of the board were given fresh training for assisting in the handling of high-value consignments. The official added that though the board’s name gave the impression that it was engaged only in promoting khadi and handloom products, in reality the board had been giving loans for manufacturing a large number of modern gizmos. |

Saharanpur. Mr Sanjay Jain, proprietor of the farm, said varieties like
Zafran, Gulab Khas , Gathli Malda were hundreds of years old but continues to attract mango lovers with there aroma and sweetness. Another variety that attracted a lot of attention was Laila Ki
Aungali, named so because of its delicate shape and small size. This variety by Shams Nursery,
Muzzafarnagar, had won the grower Hind Amar Kesri title at the mela two years ago. The nursery’s Baby
Safeda, Baby Feeder and Egg Mango were also a crowd puller. The venue at Yadvindra Gardens, in a small clearing among mango trees, was beautifully decked up. A large number of kites, golden and silver buntings, festoons and baloons were hanging all over the mango grove, where the display was being held. The mela attracted a number of people from the region, besides local residents. Since the morning, a large number of people began arriving here. It is learnt that as many as 3125 entries of 325 varieties of mangoes were received from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh. The main entries received were Dussehri (1312), Langra (195), Chausa (150),
