Kisan sabha flays villagers’ arrest
Fatehabad, June 24
The Haryana Kisan Sabha has condemned the arrest and registration of criminal cases against villagers agitating against erratic power supply at Jamalpur Shekhan village on Sunday. The shabha has demanded immediate release of the villagers.

Matric: private schools show better results
Chandigarh, June 24
Students of private schools have done better than their counterparts in government schools of Haryana in the matriculation examinations, 2003, results being declared by the Haryana Board of School Education tomorrow. An official press note said here that while 62.77 per cent of the students in private schools were successful, the corresponding figure for government schools was 49.83 per cent.

20 ultrasound machines seized
Chandigarh, June 24
Personnel from the Health Department of Haryana have so far confiscated 20 ultrasound machines in their drive to check illegal sex determination tests. Dr B.S. Dahiya, Director-General of Health Services, said at a state supervisory board meeting here today.

Nain’s judicial custody extended
Hisar, June 24
A local court today extended the judicial custody of the Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Ghasi Ram Nain up to July 8.
The Haryana Police had registered a case of sedition against Nain following a massive BKU agitation in the state in April.

No change in KU fee structure
Kurukshetra, June 24
Kurukshetra University has decided to maintain status quo regarding the fee structure of various courses of the university this year. The decision would be applicable to general students as well as students belonging to the NRI category, NRI-sponsored and industry-sponsored categories.

Minor raped
Sirsa, June 24
A minor girl was allegedly raped at the Ding Mandi railway station.
According to information received today, the girl, aged five, was found bleeding and lying unconscious at the railway station by some persons in the early hours of the morning. She is reported to be a resident of Khara Barwala village in the district.

Kisan sabha flays villagers’ arrest

The Haryana Kisan Sabha (HKS) has condemned the arrest and registration of criminal cases against villagers agitating against erratic power supply at Jamalpur Shekhan village on Sunday. The shabha has demanded immediate release of the villagers.

Mr Krishan Swaroop Gorakhpuria, state secretary of the HKS, while talking to media persons here today, alleged that the state government had been resorting to repressive measures against people instead of paying heed to their woes. He demanded the withdrawal of cases of sedition registered against farmers in various parts of the state and said the government should talk to farmers for finding an amicable solution to the issue of pending power bill arrears.

He expressed concern at the alleged arrest of hundreds of farmers in the state for recovery of loans. He alleged that the Vajpayee government at the Centre recently announced waiving of interest on the loans of farmers but no action had yet been taken on that announcement. He demanded immediate release of all farmers arrested for the recovery of loan amount.

He said the HKS had launched a drive ‘karja mukti abhiyan’ in the state and it would organise programmes at Hisar and Assandh on July 23 and July 30, respectively in this connection.

Matric: private schools show better results

Students of private schools have done better than their counterparts in government schools of Haryana in the matriculation examinations, 2003, results being declared by the Haryana Board of School Education tomorrow.

An official press note said here that while 62.77 per cent of the students in private schools were successful, the corresponding figure for government schools was 49.83 per cent.

Schools situated in the urban areas showed an overall pass percentage of 63.32 in comparison to 53.47 per cent in the rural areas. A total of 3,18,385 students had taken the examinations out of which 1,77,468 students were declared successful. The number of students placed in compartment was 44,661.

The press note added that while 59.67 per cent of the girl aspirants cleared the examinations, the success rate of boys was 53.34 per cent.

20 ultrasound machines seized

Personnel from the Health Department of Haryana have so far confiscated 20 ultrasound machines in their drive to check illegal sex determination tests. Dr B.S. Dahiya, Director-General of Health Services, said at a state supervisory board meeting here today. The 20 ultrasound machines seized, four were in Yamunanagar, three in Jhajjar, two each in Hisar, Gurgaon and Kurukshetra and one each in Faridabad, Jind, Panchkula, Panipat, Rohtak and Sirsa. As many as 727 genetic clinics and 63 genetic counselling centres had been registered in the state under the PNDT Act.

Mr M L Ranga, Haryana Minister of State for Health, who presided over the meeting, said that the state government would urge the Centre to suitably amend the PNDT Act for speedy and time-bound disposal of cases by the courts.

Nain’s judicial custody extended

Hisar, June 24
A local court today extended the judicial custody of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Ghasi Ram Nain up to July 8.

The Haryana Police had registered a case of sedition against Nain following a massive BKU agitation in the state in April.

As per the complaint, the BKU leader allegedly incited and provoked the farmers to take the government officials and ministers as hostage and wielded sharp weapons for the fulfilment of their demands. — UNI

Kurukshetra University has decided to maintain status quo regarding the fee structure of various courses of the university this year.

The decision would be applicable to general students as well as students belonging to the NRI category, NRI-sponsored and industry-sponsored categories.

Stating this here today, Kurukshetra University, Vice-Chancellor, Dr A.K. Chawla, said that the decision had been taken in accordance with the policy adopted by the Haryana Government in this regard.

Minor raped

Sirsa, June 24
A minor girl was allegedly raped at the Ding Mandi railway station.

According to information received today, the girl, aged five, was found bleeding and lying unconscious at the railway station by some persons in the early hours of the morning. She is reported to be a resident of Khara Barwala village in the district. The police later took the girl to the local Civil Hospital in an unconscious condition.

In this connection the police arrested a 25-year-old man, wearing a blue T-shirt and black trousers. According to reports, the girl had come to attend a marriage of some relative from where she was allegedly abducted and raped. The matter is being investigated by the railway police.

Meanwhile, in another case the police arrested three persons for allegedly raping a woman and threatening to kill her. A resident of Kewal village in the district had lodged a complaint in the Kalanwali police station, alleging that Suba Singh, Gaura Singh and Vajeer Singh had raped her and threatened to kill her.

Man commits suicide

Kalka, June 24
Sita Ram (47) a class-IV employee of Government College and resident of Majra village committed suicide by hanging himself from a fan. According to the police, Sita Ram committed suicide on Saturday when his wife was not at home. Source said that no suicide note was recovered. Sita Ram was reportedly ill.
