Zaheer skips net practice
Wellington, December 10 The left-arm seamer chose to avail the option of skipping the nets ahead of the first Test at Basin Reserve starting on Thursday along with batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and V.V.S. Laxman and pacer Ajit Agarkar. Though all the four are certain to play the first Test, Zaheer Khan who has not spent enough time at the nets due to the bruise is absolutely vital to India’s plan on a grassy pitch. The famous Wellington wind was in play yet again this morning at the ground as it howled from all corners and made cricketers, mediamen and a handful of cricket fans shiver in overcast conditions. The attention though had quickly shifted to the centre where an extremely grassy pitch promised run-making extremely difficult in the first Test. “There is so much grass that cows could come and there still would be enough of it left on the pitch,” said off-spinner Harbhajan Singh in his usual effervescent way as he tested a few Indian batsman with his bowling. Vice-captain Rahul Dravid for a second appeared lost in the surroundings as he walked to bat in the nets without a helmet - until a gentle reminder from skipper Saurav Ganguly sent him scurrying to fetch the headgear. Ganguly gave himself a decent bowl in the nets and after going past the bat of pint-sized wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel several times, chose to come down and advise the youngster to “bat out as long as possible rather than play your shots” - a role Patel would be asked to fulfill to the best of his ability in the first Test. Patel though appeared nonchalant with the instruction and smashed bowlers all-around the park, including a few big heaves against the captain. New Zealand chose to avail nets first in the morning and everyone’s eyes were focused on the fiery Shane Bond who got immediately into the thick of action getting a lifter smash the hand of batsman Scott Styris. Though Styris was in pain for a considerable period, he recovered soon to continue his batting with some other Kiwis including captain Stephen Fleming. Fleming instructed his bowlers to bowl him deliveries leaving the off-stump as he tried to work out his judgment of stumps. Groundsman Trevor Jackson offered optimism on his piece of turf in the middle and said it was “unusually dry” for a surface which had suffered so much of rain in recent days. “Despite its look, there is only little moisture on the pitch and it is pretty hard. It should offer good bounce and carry,” said Jackson. The groundsman said he planned to cut only a little grass from the pitch, implying the team winning the toss would have no option but to bat second in the first Test. PTI |
ICC may amend players’ terms Kolkata, December 10 The Board of Control for Cricket in India put across its point of view during the crucial interaction with the ICC representatives Justice Ahmed Ebrahim and Dave Richardson here yesterday, according to sources in the BCCI. BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya and senior cricketer Anil Kumble made it clear to the two ICC officials that certain clauses in the contract like a moratorium on advertisements and use of images of players would not be acceptable to Indian cricketers, the sources said. According to the players’ terms cricketers could not endorse any product during the World Cup and 30 days on either side which came in direct conflict with the products of the official sponsors.

Bangladesh
slump to worst-ever loss
Dhaka, December 10 “I am delighted,” said 20-year-old Lawson, who captured six wickets for just six runs off 6.3 overs as Bangladesh were all out for 87 in their second innings. For Bangladesh, it was the worst defeat since they started playing Test cricket two years ago. The second and final Test will be played in Chittagong from December 16. Facing a huge first-innings deficit of 397 runs, Bangladesh were skittled out by the West Indies pace battery in just 31.5 overs. The win came as a morale booster for the West Indians, who have lost 25 games played away from home. “It’s our first Test win after losing away series for a long time. It’s a good feeling,” said captain Ridley Jacobs. Earlier in the day, Jacobs missed his century by nine runs as he ran out of partners as the West Indies piled up 536 in their first innings. Sodhi leads Punjab to win
Gurgaon, December 10 Sodhi first smashed a quickfire unbeaten 73 off just 75 balls to help his side post 288 for six in the stipulated 50 overs and then returned with impressive bowling figures (three for 49 off 10 overs) as Punjab skittled out Delhi for 227 in 46.5 overs. Lower-order batsman Rajiv Rathore waged a lone battle for Delhi scoring an unbeaten 57 (47 balls) with the help of eight boundaries. Earlier, sent in to bat, Punjab openers gave the team a flying start when they put on 99 runs on board off just 103 balls. Playing an attacking innings Mongia smashed the bowlers all around the park to score 65 (57 balls). Manish Sharma also chipped in with 57 as the openers set the stage for some big hitting by the middle order batsmen. Though Punjab lost the openers and No 3 batsman Ravneet Rickey in quick succession, Dharmani (68) and Sodhi tormented the Delhi bowlers with some lusty hitting. Sarandeep Singh, who received some stick from the batsmen, was the most successful bowler for Delhi claiming three wickets for 49 runs. Chasing the stiff target, Delhi lost wickets regularly as no batsman barring Akash Chopra (38) and Rathore could offer any resistance to the opposition attack led by Sodhi.

NFL: JCT clash with Indian Bank today Chandigarh, December 10 With only two points from two draws, JCT hope to reverse the trend against the bank men, who incidentally are back in the high-profile league for the second time after having finished runners-up in the second division last April. Coached by former international VP Sathyan, Indian Bank have so far performed creditably and are placed fourth in the 12-team league while JCT are trailing at the 11th spot. JCT opened their campaign with a 0-1 defeat against Salgaocar at Margao on November 23 followed by another setback against East Bengal at Kolkata on November 27. But in the third encounter against arch-rivals Mohun Bagan, the Phagwara outfit gave a good account of themselves with a creditable 3-3 draw after being down 1-3 at one stage. Harvinder's brace coupled with Kwabena Yeboah's strike fetched the mill men their first point but HAL halted them in their tracks with a 1-0 victory at Bangalore on December 4. In their last tie against ITI on December 7 JCT earned another point through a goal-less draw. Indian Bank, on the other hand, are in a far more comfortable position having accumulated seven points from two victories and one draw. After edging out ITI 2-1 in their opening tie, the bank men defeated Dempo SC 3-1 at Chennai on November 25. Goa's Churchill Brothers halted their winning streak, snatching a point with a 1-1 draw. The first defeat for the bank men came against Goa's Vasco SC who edged them out 2-1 on December 4. JCT underwent a major overhaul recently. Back into their fold are internationals IM Vijayan and Joe Paul Ancheri along with Nigerian defender Musa Aliu, who was playing in Vietnam. The team management also roped in two Ghanians -- forward Kwabena Yeboah and goalkeeper Mansuru Mohammed but the latter's international transfer is still pending due to which he remains out of action. Yeboah is shaping up well and was one of the scorer's in the drawn tie against Mohun Bagan. The other notable faces are medio Hardip Saini, striker Hardip Gill, and winger Jaswinder. Saini has also displayed maturity upfront and on at least two occasions, his power-packed shots ricocheted off the goalpost. Harvinder(junior), who scored a brace against Mohun Bagan, is another player to watch. Indian Bank have also recruited a couple of foreigners, including Sri Lankans Imran Mohammed and Kasun Jayasuriya. The other notable faces are Ravi Babu and Syed Shabir Pasha, who incidentally scored the all-important goal against BMFC and enabled his team to qualify for the NFL. In the current league, Indian Bank have netted seven goals thus far and Jayasuriya alone has accounted for three while Imran Mohammed and Pasha have fired two each. On the whole, the match is expected to be a close affair. JCT coach Sukhwinder Singh and his deputy Parminder Singh are hoping for an improved showing while Indian Bank trainer Sathyan is also eyeing full points. The kick-off is at 2 pm.
