Improved
batting by Indians
Napier, December 8 The Indians, who were shot out for 209 in the first innings, batted resolutely to reach 191 for three in the second essay before thundershowers brought an early end to the day’s proceedings at the McLean Park. The Indians, who conceded an 86-run lead to the hosts after Central Districts rode on a fine century by Bevan Griggs to declare their first innings at 295 for nine, did well to find their bearings on the final day of the only warm-up match during the entire 47-day tour. Though Sanjay Bangar (70), Virender Sehwag (61) and Sachin Tendulkar (52 not out) played confidence-boosting knocks, the biggest disappointment was Rahul Dravid who failed with the bat for the second time in the match. Dravid, the most prolific Indian batsman this year, was bowled by Andrew Schwass for one after he attempted a flick at a delivery which cut away sharply and hit his stumps. Dravid was out for nought in the first innings off only the second ball when he had edged a catch to Michael Mason behind the stumps. Sehwag was his usual belligerent self and smashed boundaries on either side, sometimes audaciously clearing a packed off-side field before an expansive drive to a delivery he was nowhere near to resulted in a catch to the keeper. The dashing opener batted for only 55 balls for his 61 runs and hit 11 fours in all. Bangar played true to his style and looked to keep most deliveries out of his stumps. He was unbeaten on 39 at lunch and had moved to 52 by tea break during a curtailed afternoon session. He started to hit out at everything after tea, apparently under instructions, so that others could get a look-in as well. Bangar, in doing so, was caught at long on off Glen Sulzberger, having batted for 161 balls and hit seven fours and a six during his innings. Rhodes stars in S. Africa’s victory Durban, December 8 Jonty Rhodes dug South Africa out of trouble with his innings of 98. He found support from Graeme Smith, who scored 56, and Shaun Pollock, with 57 not out. Pakistan batted without urgency and were never in the hunt. Salim Elahi’s 31 was their top score. Pollock took three for 12 and left arm spinner Nicky Boje three for 29. Jonty Rhodes hit 98 as South Africa staged a thrilling recovery in the first one-day international cricket match against Pakistan at Kingsmead today. South Africa made 272 for seven after being sent in. They were tottering at 151 for six before Rhodes and South African captain Shaun Pollock (57 not out) put on 99 for the seventh wicket. Veteran Pakistan left-arm pace bowler Wasim Akram was the man who caused South Africa’s early troubles. He took three for 19 in his ten overs. Collins, Hinds put Windies on top
Dhaka, December 8 Hinds hit 12 boundaries in an unbeaten 73 while Gayle scored 44 in an unbroken opening stand of 118 at the close. Fast bowlers Pedro Collins and Vasbert Drakes helped the touring team dismiss Bangladesh for 139 just after tea earlier on the day. Collins grabbed five for 26, the second best figures of his test career after his six for 72 against New Zealand last June. The West Indies’ paceman bowled opener Hannan Sarkar for a duck with an out-swinger and rounded off the innings by bowling Enamul Hoque for six with the first delivery of his 18th over. Drakes took four for 61 in his test debut. Captain Ridley Jacobs justified his decision to put Bangladesh in to bat as the West Indies sent five batsmen to the dressing room before lunch. Alok Kapali and Khaled Mashud added a valuable 73 in 131 minutes for the sixth wicket before skipper Mashud was bowled by a Drakes’ yorker. Mashud scored 22 with two fours. Kapali, who scored an unbeaten 89 in the third one-dayer on December 3, hit his first half-century in test cricket. His fine 52 contained nine fours. Habibul Bashar (24) scored his 1,000th Test run. Tie abandoned Harare, December 8 While play was possible during the morning at the Harare Sports Club, Kenya’s batsmen were generally stifled by a tight Zimbabwe attack and scored 211 all out at little more than four an over. In reply Zimbabwe lost the wicket of captain Alistair Campbell, who was run out for only two runs, and the home side were 18 for one when play was called off.

Delhi beat HP Rohtak, December 8 Things seemed normal when play started today at the scheduled hour. Himachal won the toss and put Delhi in to bat first. After about an hour’s play, the Delhi skipper Vijay Dahiya stepped into bat at the fall of Delhi’s third wicket at the total of 52 and started appealing to the umpire regarding the erratic behaviour of the pitch. In his view the pitch had uneven bounce and was injury prone. The skipper of the opponent Vikram Rathore also joined him in appealing when the scoreboard read 68 for three. At this juncture, 21 overs had already been bowled. The two umpires referred the matter to the match
referee Shirish Buch and it was decided to reschedule the match on the alternate pitch and the game was reduced to 28 overs a side. The proceedings held in the morning session were declared ‘null and void’. The fresh proceedings of the game could start at 12.45 p.m.. Scoreboard: Himachal Pradesh:

Unprecedented gathering of sports stars at Jalandhar, December 8 It was indeed a unique and unprecedented function as never before such a galaxy of sportsmen and women had assembled for a non-sporting event, i.e. release of a book “Grit and Glory”, an encyclopaedia of Punjab Police sports compiled by Mr Rajdeep Singh Gill, Additional Director-General of Police, Punjab Armed Police. The herculean task took Mr Gill and his assistants 102 months to compile the 550-page glossy volume. Using the occasion, Mr Gill and the central sports committee of PAP decided to felicitate all those who excelled on playfields — between 1947 and 1966 — while representing Punjab Police. Present among this galaxy of Punjab Police sportsmen was the world’s oldest living athlete, 109-year-old Baba Joginder Singh, who had superannuated from Punjab Police in 1951. Though he had to be escorted to the dais before being felicitated by the Punjab Director-General of Police, Mr Mahil Singh Bhullar, he was all by himself as he proudly displayed the card issued to him by Guiness Books declaring him the world’s oldest living athlete acknowledging gold medals he won in the World Veteran’s Meets in Turku (Finland) and Seoul (Korea) in the above 95 year age group. Though most of those felicitated were in their 70s or 80s, only a few needed escorts to go to the dais to receive their mementos and gifts. Later, each one of them got a copy of Grit and Glory. They were all paid travelling allowance to attend the function. Besides Baba Joginder Singh, there were virtually all “babas” of Indian sports, be it athletics, basketball, football, hockey, volleyball, wrestling or any other sport, who had dominated the sports scenario of their times not only at home but in various international competitions abroad, including Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, World Championships and Asian Championships. The stalwarts felicitated included several who had won medals — gold, silver and bronze — not only in Olympic Games but also in Commonwealth and Asian Games. They were joined in the audience by the present day stars, including Kartar Singh, Bahadur Singh, Sunita Rani, Baljit Singh Dhillon, Pargat Singh, Parminder Singh (Senior), Sajjan Singh Cheema, Inder Singh, Surinder Singh Sodhi and a few others besides some sports officials, including Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, Mr Raj Kumar and Mr Balraj Sharma. Conspicuous by their absence were the key office-bearers of the Punjab Olympic Association. Later, Mr Bhullar complimented Mr Rajdeep Singh Gill for his stupendous effort in bringing out the mammoth volume putting together the entire history of Punjab Police sports together. The pioneering effort, he said, would be a guiding stone for the future generation of sportspersons from the force who, he advised, should derive inspiration from their seniors and veterans to hold high the flag of not only the police but of the country in international events. Mr Gill traced the history of his effort spanning over eight years. He experienced difficulties as there was not a single source which could give him accurate and authentic information about the Punjab Police sportsmen and women. Those felicitated today were: Banta Singh, Gurbachan Singh, Jodhe Ram, Joginder Singh, Lal Singh Gill, Madan Lal, Randhir Singh — all from track and field; Gurbax Singh, Tarlochan Singh Bawa — hockey; Gurbax Singh — volleyball; and Banta Singh — wrestling, all above 75 years of age. Argentina eves world champs
Perth, Australia, December 8 Argentina had been beaten in three previous World Cup finals and also lost the final at the Sydney Olympics before breaking through today to claim their first major title in dramatic fashion. The teams were tied at 1-1 and were still locked together after two periods of extra-time failed to produce another goal, forcing the shootout. Even that was desperately close, with 16 shots needed to decide the outcome in Argentina’s favour. The South Americans had taken the early lead during regular time when Ines Arrondo scored in the fifth minute but then sat back on their lead, spending the rest of the game defending. Their tactics seemed to have paid off until Ageeth Boomgaardt equalised for the Dutch with just two minutes remaining. The teams were still level at 1-1 after two periods of extra-time, forcing the match into a penalty shootout which also provided plenty of drama. The shootout became sudden-death after eight of the first 10 penalties were saved by the rival goalkeepers, Mariela Antoniska and Clarinda Sinnige. The match was not decided until the 16th stroke when Antoniska pulled off another save with her team leading 4-3, igniting wild celebrations among the Argentine players. Earlier, China upset Australia 2-0 in the bronze medal playoff, condemning the host-nation to their worst World Cup result in 16 years. Ma Yibo opened the scoring in the 13th minute before Chinese captain Chen Zhaoxia made it 2-0 with a goal three minutes before halftime. Reuters |

NFL Kolkata, December 8 After a barren first half, Subhasish Roychowdhury and Alvito D’Counha struck for the winners who maintained their all-win record in the tournament, and carried their point tally to 12 from four matches. They are yet to concede a goal. The Salt Lake Stadium outing saw an East Bengal dominance, as Bagan badly felt the absence of injured Nigerian forward George Ekeh, while star striker Baichung Bhutia, who took the field braving a calf problem, had to be taken away in the later session. East Bengal played a good passing game, keeping midfield control throughout. Their new Brazilian striker Gilmar da Silva Gonsalves gave ample evidence of his talent taking quick turns, and exhibiting good ball control and speed. The red and yellow brigade went ahead in the 70th minute when D’Counha’s floating corner from the right eluded Bagan defenders and custodian Rajat Ghosh Dastidar and Roy Chowdhury headed in. They scored again in injury time as D’Counha took a snap left footer into the far corner of the net following a pass from the right. Bagan remain on six points from five matches. Dempo hold Mahindras Margao: Goa’s Dempo and Mumbais Mahindra United played a goalless draw to split points in the National Football League here today. The draw takes Dempo to 10 points from five matches while Mahindra United have scored five points from as many matches.
