Sachin’s heroics not enough
Christchurch, December 4 Playing in the unique format of the game for the first time, the Indians did well to take the lead in the 10-over per innings match played under lights but lost way in the second essay. India rested captain Saurav Ganguly and his deputy Rahul Dravid from the game but Tendulkar turned up the heat on the hosts by slamming a record 72 and picking up five wickets to be adjudged man-of-the-match. Tendulkar, returning to international cricket after missing the one-day series against the West Indies back home last month due to a hamstring niggle, thrashed his runs off only 27 balls with 10 fours, two eights and a 12. He also claimed the home captain Chris Cairns in both innings but it was not enough for the visitors. New Zealand batted first on winning the toss and secured 123 for five on the board from their 10 overs but trailed the visitors by 10 runs in the first innings as Tendulkar showed blistering form with the bat. New Zealand seemed down and out when on 70 for five in the second innings with just two overs remaining to recover lost ground. But part-time off spinner Virender Sehwag then went for 31 runs in his only over to turn the tide in favour of the hosts. New Zealand’s first innings was largely a handiwork of two experienced batters, opener Nathan Astle (42 off 23 balls) and Craig McMillan (34 off 18). Bruised
Zaheer may be rested Christchurch, December 4 McCullum crunched a shot to mid-off in the closing minutes of New Zealand’s second innings at the Jade Stadium and it hit Zaheer bang on his right knee. So forceful was the shot that despite the ball hitting Zaheer, it still nearly cleared the long-off fence. The left-arm paceman immediately signalled to the pavilion and limped off the field at the end of the over, assisted by physio Andrew Leipus. He left the field immediately and coach John Wright later confirmed that the bowler was quite badly bruised and would probably be rested from the three-day practice game against Central Districts starting at Napier on Friday.

Vasco halt Indian Bank’s run Margao, December 4 Marcos Pereira scored in the 2nd and 35th minute while for Indian Bank Kasun Jayasurya scored in the 15th minute. With this win Vasco came on par with Indian Bank and Salgaocar with seven points each, below table toppers East Bengal and Dempo with nine points each. It was a fast paced first half, with an equal share of exchanges by both the teams. Vasco started with a full steam and shot into the lead as early as in the 2nd minute from the start through Marcos Pereira, who collected a well-measured pass from Sushanat Mathew from the right flank and shot into the net 1-0. Inspired by the goal Vasco could have increased their lead in the next three minutes but Pereira’s attempt was missed by inches off a pass from Rui Wanderely Weis. The Bankmen came near scoring in the 10th minute of the first half when Mohammed Qizar sent a diagonal cross to Jayasurya but his pile driver shot was well fisted over by Vasco goalkeeper Rogerio Ramos. Vasco’s lead was short-lived as Bankmen restored parity in the 15th minute of the first half through Sri Lankan Jayasurya off a pass from Sahbir Pasha. Stung by the equaliser Vasco lads accelerated the pace of their game and increased their lead in the 35th minute through Pereira, who, after receving the pass from Sushanata Mathew, dodged past couple of rival defenders and unleashed a carpet drive shot which found net 2-1.

Nurlan strike sees HAL through Bangalore, December 4 Nurlan scored the all-important goal in the 24th minute pushing in a rebound from JCT custodian Arvind Kumar, who failed to clear effectively a direct hit from HAL captain Dayananda. While, HAL, with the win, have four points from four outings, JCT have only one point from the same number of matches. HAL enjoyed territorial advantage and dominated the proceedings with better ball control. However, they muffed numerous chances that came their way. Early in the game, JCT were awarded a free kick and the resultant kick taken by I.M. Vijayan saw the ball sailing over the cross bar.

Korea keep semifinal dream alive
Perth, December 4 South Korea’s fate will be determined only after China’s match against New Zealand in the last game of the pool rounds later today. A Chinese victory will see them through to the semifinals, a loss or draw elevates Korea. Australia, Argentina and the Netherlands have already qualified for the semifinals on Friday. England jumped from fifth to third place in Pool B after winning 3-0 over Spain to earn the right to play off for fifth to eighth place. England needed three goals to get ahead of Spain on goal difference and scored them in style. Helen Grant scored first for England five minutes into the first half, deflecting into goal Leisa King’s pass from the right. Jane Smith put England 2-0 ahead in the middle of the second half, taking time to shoot from 11 metres in front of goal after England had squandered four penalty corners in succession. Spain were stung into action, pushing Nuria Camon, Silva Munoz and Ana Perez forward to score but they could not convert the chances from the field or two penalty corners. Anna Bennett scored seconds from time, chipping in a loose ball in the circle. “If we play well in the next two games we will come out of this tournament with a higher ranking than from the last World Cup in Utrecht,” said England’s coach, Tricia Heberle. “I was pleased today we put together some very nice hockey and it is good that it happened at this end of the tournament.” “We do not think England is better than us, but we always seem to suffer a bad game in a tournament and that happened today it was just one of those days,” said Spain’s Silvia Munoz. “We played without passion and we will get the passion back if Japan beats Australia today.” In the earlier, pool A match, Germany defeated Ukraine 5-2 and in pool B the Netherlands beat the USA 5-2 and South Africa demolished Ireland 6-0 at the bottom of the pool. Pool A cellar-dwellers Russia held undefeated Argentina goal-less for 54 minutes and troubled the South Americans with injuries to Cecelia Rognoni and Karina Masotta before tournament top scorer Agustina Garcia (7) scored the only goal of the match.
