India determined to reverse trend
Christchurch, December 2 “We have played well this year and have been quite consistent. We will try our best,” said Ganguly, soon after his team landed here on a 47-day tour which will include two Tests and seven one-day internationals against the hosts. Ganguly, who was mindful of the fact that India have not won a Test series here since 1967-68 and had a 4-6 winning Test record in New Zealand, is just one victory away from equalling Mohammed Azharuddin’s feat of 14 wins as Test captain. Coach John Wright was equally upbeat on his team’s chances though he cautioned that the conditions in New Zealand would be very difficult and demanding. “Teams find it hard to play in New Zealand because the wicket seams a lot. “You could get the odd good wicket but with the ball moving about quite a bit, it’s not easy. Then it can get very cold and windy and wet - so it can be a very demanding tour.” Wright drew comfort from his batsmen’s showing in home and alien conditions in the past one year and made a special mention of recent tour to England where India drew the four-Test series 1-1 besides winning the Natwest Trophy. “We are a strong batting line-up and have proved formidable not only in India but also away from home.” The Indians start the tour with a Super Max International at Jade Stadium on Wednesday, followed by a three-day warm up game against Central Districts before the start of the first of the two Tests in Basin Reserve, Wellington, from December 12. Wright said the team’s build up was good and even though one or two places were up for grabs in the one-day team, the core was pretty much established. “Maybe we are looking for one or two players but the team is fairly settled and I am pleased with our progress.” With Rahul Dravid doing the wicketkeeper-batsman’s role, the team has more depth in the batting line-up with Virender Sehwag adding his dash at the start of the innings pushing master batsman Sachin Tendulkar at number four to manoeuvre the innings in the end. India are likely to miss the services of old war-horse Anil Kumble in the Test series who opted out citing personal reasons. In the absence of Kumble, Harbhajan Singh and young left-arm spinner Murali Kartik will have to shore up the spin strength. Wright is not worried about his bowlers though saying Sehwag and Tendulkar could be useful slow bowlers in the coming series. “Sehwag is useful and Tendulkar can bowl anything,” said Wright. PTI |
Harbhajan, Sehwag fined
Auckland, December 2 Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and batsman Virender Sehwag were hit with 200 NZ dollars instant fines for their undeclared dirty footwear as the Indian team flew in here. New Zealand, one of the world’s leading agricultural exporters, is particularly sensitive to bio security in the wake of the foot and mouth and mad cow disease outbreaks. New Zealand also fears the tropical fruit fly and currently much of Auckland city is each morning being sprayed from the air after painted apple moth got into the country accidentally, threatening the timber industry. Harbhajan Singh and Sehwag could have contested the instant fine but run the risk of a $ 200,000 dollar fine if found guilty in court. Indian manager N R Chaudhry said they were not upset over the event, saying, “these things happen”. Numerous travellers are caught despite warnings. Airlines flying into the country are required to show an in-flight agriculture video and the arrival form carries extensive warnings. Harbhajan Singh and Sehwag are not the first sportsmen caught: members of the Australian rugby league team copped instant fines earlier this year for identical offences. If the two men had declared their shoes they would have been taken off them, cleaned at New Zealand taxpayer expense, and returned to them. AFP |
BCCI fails to meet ICC deadline
New Delhi, December 2 The ICC had fixed November 30 as the deadline for all the participating countries to name a provisional 30-member squad for next year’s World Cup but the Indian cricket board had not yet announced the list of probables. “We will be announcing the list of probables in a few days. The shortlisting will be done by the selectors,” the BCCI’s media manager Amrit Mathur said, though he could not give a specific date nor the reasons for not meeting the deadline. “I can’t say the exact date when it will be announced, but it will be done shortly,” Mathur said. With India’s one-day series against New Zealand ending on January 14, there was speculation that the selectors may also not name the final 15-member squad for the World Cup by the December 31 deadline set by the ICC. Australia, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka were among the top teams who have already announced their provisional squads before the deadline though they are engaged in international matches till January. Waugh left out of World Cup squad
Sydney, December 2 According to a press note issued here, Australian Cricket Board (ACB) chief executive officer James Sutherland said the National Selection Panel (NSP) had chosen an initial 30-man squad for the 2003 International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup. Despite the selection of this squad, players who have not been named can still be asked to represent Australia at the tournament, the note pointed out. The squad will be reduced to 15 players by December 31, 2002, according to the guidelines set out in the participating Nation agreement between the ICC and the 14 countries participating in the event. The agreement stipulates that an initial 30-man squad from each nation must be submitted to the ICC by 30 November 2002 (or the first working day that follows), with the subsequent reduction to 15 players taking place by the end of the month. Commenting on the players chosen, NSP chairman Trevor Hohns said, ‘’This is the first phase in selecting the squad to attend South Africa for the 2003 World Cup.’’ ‘’There are a number of players we need to continue looking at over the coming month as we move to cut the squad by half. That will be a challenging task because there are several players who could fill a variety of positions for us at the World Cup.’’ The Australian side is scheduled to depart for the World Cup in South Africa on January 29, 2003. Following is the list of probables Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Michael Bevan, Andy Bichel, Jason Gillespie, Matthew Hayden, Brett Lee, Darren Lehmann, Damien Martyn, Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Shane Watson, Justin Langer, Jimmy Maher, Greg Blewett, Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark, Michael Clarke, Ryan Campbell, Nathan Hauritz, Brad Hogg, Mike Hussey, Ashley Noffke, Andrew Symonds, Brad Williams, Brad Haddin, Ian Harvey, Cameron White, Mark Higgs, Damien Wright.

One-day
match for disabled today Faridabad, December 2 Mr Ajit Wadekar, a former Indian Test player and president of the AICAD, said here today that this will be the first match of its kind to be played at international level for physically disabled cricket players. He said the visiting English team will play a total of three matches and the second and third one-dayers will be held at Lucknow and Mumbai on December 5 and December 8, respectively. The winner of the series will be awarded the ‘LG’ one-day International Cricket Cup’ for Disabled’ claiming the AICAD which was a voluntary organisation and set up in 1988 wanted to promote sporting activities among people with physical disabilities, on a regular basis. The tournament is sponsored by ‘LG’ Electronics and the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India. All the three matches will be telecast live by the Doordarshan. Russia win first Davis Cup
Paris, December 2 In a showdown between two of the most inexperienced players ever to feature in the title-match, Youzhny recovered his nerve after two dreadful sets to claw his way back into the match, dousing Mathieu’s fire and the passion of the Parisian crowd. Youzhny, a ballboy the last time his country appeared in a final in 1995, was brought in by Russian coach Shamil Tarpischev to replace former world number one Yevgeny Kafelnikov in a risky gamble which proved a masterstroke. Not since 1964 has a team come back from 2-1 down in a final to win the title and Youzhny, like Mathieu aged 20, is the first player to come from two sets down in the final singles to win the Davis Cup. Tarpischev did not believe Kafelnikov, who was thrashed in the opening singles and defeated with Marat Safin in Saturday’s doubles, was in the right physical or mental state of mind to play the decider. In yesterday’s first reverse singles, Safin battered Sebastien Grosjean into a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 submission to level the tie at 2-2. An exhausted Safin kept Russia’s Cup hopes alive by winning a thrilling third set tiebreak 13-11. Youzhny had played just five previous Davis Cup singles, losing four of them. MOSCOW: Jubilant Russians celebrated their first ever Davis Cup tennis title today, splashing triumphant images over all major newspapers and newscasts as President Vladimir Putin personally thanked the victorious team. Russia battled courageously on Sunday to claw their way back from a 2-1 deficit to beat holders France in dramatic fashion. “Heroes of Russia!” gushed the Sport Express daily in a front page spread. “Thank you fate for allowing me to see this. Thank you Marat (Safin)! Thank you Yevgeny! And, of course, thank you Mikhail! You achieved the impossible!!!” “We can’t always lose!’’ the mass circulation Moskovsky Komsomolets exulted above a picture of Safin. Reuters |

Stress fractures no cause to worry: Chadha Chandigarh, December 2 Talking to The Tribune Dr Chadha said: “Injuries are part and parcel of a sportsperson, and stress fractures are very common in games where overuse and combined movement of extension and rotation is involved like in fast bowlers, tennis players, wrestlers, gymnasts, golfers etc, etc”. According to him the pain in certain cases is mild, therefore a sportsperson continues playing with the help of analgesic medicines which leads to non-healing of the fracture and delay in recovery. Irina Brar is lucky to be diagnosed at an early stage. Because normally such problems are diagnosed at a later stage or go unnoticed. Dr Chadha says stress fracture is always on the opposite side to the activities — left side in case of a right hand fast bowler, tennis player. Those who have week back and abdomen muscles are more prone to such injuries as the load of activity is transmitted to the spine. According to Dr Chadha Sachin Tendulkar also had a similar type of defect — lumbar spondylolysis — wherein there was a gap in the pars-intercularis of the lumbar vertebra. |

Salgaocar trounce ITI Margao, December 2 The ‘Professional League’ Champions Salgaocar were the attacking lot right from the word go and the ITIans were caught on the back foot throughout the match and left to lick their wounds later. For
Salgoacar, Dudu Omagbemi scored in the 28th minute of first half, while forward Alex Ambrose scored the second goal in the 54th minute. Starting with full team, Omagbemi and Ambrose pierced into the rival defence with good support from the mid-field trio Tomba Singh, Bungo Singh and Climax Lawrence who were feeding their upfront brilliantly. They could have been up by at least three goals at the breather had they utilised the chances before them specially in the first half. ITI goalkeeper Gumpe Rime brought off two good saves, in the 2nd and 3rd minute. First it was a cross from Tomba Singh to Ambrose, which he saved brilliantly, next was Dudu’s powerpacked shot off a pass from Tomba Singh. The third was goalline save by ITI defender Sunil Kumar off a shot from Dudu off a pass from Lawrence. ITI made only good move in the 21 st minute by
Zubiar, whose shot was saved by Salgaocar goalkeeper Juje Siddhi diving to his left.
