India fail to polish off tail

Napier, December 7
Ajit Agarkar’s exploits with the ball were countered by a gutsy Bevan Griggs, who posted an unbeaten maiden century to give Central Districts an 86-run first innings lead against India on a truncated second day of the warm-up match here today.

A little known 24-year old Griggs, coming to bat at No 6, drove the Indians up the wall in frustration as the visitors were in a position of strength at one stage having reduced the hosts to 153 for seven.

Agarkar claimed four wickets, including three in a five over spell, to help the visitors bounce back into the match before Griggs’ 100 not out put the brakes on the slide as the Central Districts declared their first innings at 295 for nine.

On a day when bad light and rain twice forced an interruption, India declined to start their second innings in poor light in the final session after the umpires offered them the choice with still 20-odd overs remaining to be bowled.

Agarkar led the charge in the morning session but the inability of the Indian bowlers to polish off the tail cost them dearly as Griggs added 142 runs with the late order batsmen Michael Mason, B Hefford and Lance Hamilton.

After adding 47 for the eighth wicket with Mason (21) and 37 with Hefford (9) for the ninth, Griggs put on an undefeated 58 runs with last man Hamilton (9 not out) as the Indians struggled to break the Central Districts resistance in the post-lunch session.

Griggs was picked for the match only for his batting ability even though he is a recognised wicketkeeper. His form must have delighted national selectors who have delayed naming of the squad for the first Test next week because of the woeful form of their top batsmen including captain Stephen Fleming who fared poorly in a state game for Wellington.

Indians, on the other hand, must be disappointed by the form of their bowlers as they struggled in the afternoon on a wicket which increasingly got flatter.

Left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra failed to impress as the swing bowler just could not find the right length to bowl in seaming conditions, either pitching it too up or bowling too short, much to the batsman's delight.

Griggs, who dominated the afternoon session completely, was also pleased to see Nehra being brought on to bowl just after Agarkar had made twin strikes in one over.

“I was surprised because Agarkar was the pick of their bowlers who moved the ball well at a good pace and generally kept it low on the the off stump,” Griggs said.

Griggs reached his century off the second new ball with a streaky edge in the slips where a leaping VVS Laxman at second slip could only touch it before it disappeared into the pickets.

Griggs, whose previous best in first class cricket was 76 against Northern Districts made last year, said his heart came to his mouth when he saw Laxman leap up in the air and make a bid for the catch.

Greatbatch flays Indians

Napier, December 7
Central Districts’ coach Mark Greatbatch was scathing in his criticism of India’s refusal to bat in the second innings in poor light on the second day of the three-day game at McLean Park here today.

“I’m really disappointed at they not choosing to bat in the second innings,” said Greatbatch, a former New Zealand Test cricketer, as he rued the lost opportunity of his bowlers to have a crack at the visiting batsmen.

“They have three of the best batters in the world but they don’t want to bat,” said Greatbatch. “Perhaps they want to bat tomorrow when the conditions are sunny.”

Greatbatch was surprised at the approach of the visitors who had expressed their desire to use the three-day game to get themselves in some form ahead of the first Test starting at Wellington on Thursday.

After the splendind showing by his pace bowlers to get the Indians out for 209 in the first innings, Greatbatch was keen to force a result in his favour, something which the Central Districts had done so commendably four years ago against the Indians with a seven-wicket victory.

“I’d have definitely liked to have a go at the Indian batsmen. It would be just great if we could force a win against them.”

The Indian captain Saurav Ganguly refused to get drawn into the issue and said he felt the light was bad and they could not have continued.

Indian team Manager N.R. Choudhary confirmed the umpires had asked Ganguly whether he wanted his team to bat in the prevailing light conditions.

“The light was not enough. There is no point in risking injury to your main players ahead of the first Test,” said Choudhary.

Coming back to the game, Ganguly said he could have continued with Agarkar after the paceman’s twin strike in an over but decided to give others a chance.

“I could have continued with Ajit but wanted others to get some form as well,” said Ganguly.

Ganguly had removed Agarkar from strike just after the medium-pacer had picked two wickets in one over and brought on Ashish Nehra into attack.

But the move did not fetch Ganguly the desired result as neither Nehra nor Harbhajan Singh could get past the tail and paceman Tinu Yohannan was left to bowl bouncers coming from round the wicket against No 11 batsman Lance Hamilton.

“I would agree with the criticism that other bowlers should have been good enough to get past the tail,” said Ganguly.

Refusing to blame the wicket, Ganguly said, “there was still something in it for the bowlers. Hopefully, we would come out and bat well tomorrow”. PTI

McKenzie steers SA to victory

Bloemfontien, December 7
Neil McKenzie, a borderline prospect for a World Cup place, took South Africa to a six-wicket win in the fifth and final one-day international against Sri Lanka at Springbok Park.

McKenzie made 70 not out as South Africa completed a 4-1 series victory yesterday against a Sri Lankan team which had a disappointing tour.

It was another lacklustre performance by the Sri Lankans, although wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara returned to form with 77 not out in a Sri Lankan total of 228 for eight. The left-handed Sangakkara’s highest score in the first four internationals was 10.

Sri Lanka lost their first two wickets for seven runs, with skipper Sanath Jayasuriya out for two to end a series in which he scored only 104 runs in five innings.

South African new cap Monde Zondeki took a wicket with his first ball in international cricket when he took the key wicket of Marvan Atapattu, who made 53.

Atapattu and left-arm fast bowler Chaminda Vaas were virtually the only Sri Lankans to maintain consistent form during a tour in which they lost two Test matches before the one-day series.

Atapattu edged the ball high to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher’s right. Boucher could not hold it but slip fielder Andrew Hall twisted to take the rebound left-handed. Zondeki, (20) built up lively pace and took one for 37 in eight overs.

Sangakkara had useful partnerships of 61 for the fifth wicket with Russel Arnold (36) and 56 for the sixth wicket with Thilan Samaraweera (33).

It took Sangakkara 92 balls to reach his fifty but he accelerated in the closing overs as he went to 77 off 115 deliveries with eight fours and a six.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
ITI, JCT split points; Vasco win

Bangalore, December 7
Local outfit ITI held JCT Phagwara to a goal-less draw in the seventh National Football League here today.

Though the telephonemen and the Punjab outfit went all out for their first win, things did not quite work out well for them at the Bangalore Football Stadium. The verdict gave them a point each.

Both now have two points from five outings, which saw them lose three and draw the remaining two.

Towards the end of the first half, Hardip Gill had a good chance to score for JCT but his shot was off the mark.

Soon after the breather, Hardeep Saini came up with a superb effort but the ball hit the bar and went out much to the disappointment of the millmen who, incidentally, are former champions.

The telephonemen had their opportunities as well. They were unlucky as Najeeb’s shot hit the bar and the ball went out in the 71st minute.

Vasco win

Margao
Vasco defeated local league champions Salgaocar 1-0 to register their third successive win in the seventh edition of the National Football League at the Nehru stadium here today.

The win has boosted Vasco’s morale ahead of their next match against Mahindra here on December 11. Vasco have collected 10 points from five matches, while Salgaocar, who suffered their second defeat, have seven points from as many matches.

Vasco played an attacking game in the first half, scoring the all- important goal in the 5th minute. Medio Menino Fernandes from the centre passed to striker Rui Weis, who adjusted himself essayed a rasping drive that found the net beating keeper Siddi all ends up.

The early goal gave Vasco more confidence as they attacked the rival citadel with their midfield dominating the proceedings.

In the 18th minute, a Marcos cross from the left saw Rui Weis failing to connect and then the ball went to unmarked Peter Rodrigues, who could not score from close.

A few minutes later, Marcos himself had a chance to consolidate the lead but his chip from inside the box missed the target narrowly.

Vasco’s defence kept the rival strikers Dudu and Sunday quiet with tight marking. Salgaocar players tried long passes to feed their forwards but to no avail as Selwyn Fernandes and Seby Dias kept them on a tight leash as Salgaocar could not have a clear look at the rival goal in the first half. PTI

Encyclopaedia of police sports
Prabhjot Singh
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 7
Sports is his passion. This passion combined with an eye for details has made Mr Rajdeep Singh Gill, Additional Director-General of Police , come out with a voluminous Who’s Who of Punjab Police sports.

The 550-page illustrated book, perhaps the first of its kind, not only carries comprehensive biographical details of all outstanding sportsmen and women belonging to the Punjab Police who won honours in Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and other international sporting events, but also thumbnail sketches of those who did well in National Championships as well as the All-India Police Games.

Though academics in general and book writing in particular have nothing to do with policing, this scholarly effort of Mr Gill in a virgin area is commendable.

It took Mr Gill, himself a keen sportsman in general and hockey enthusiast in particular, as many as 102 months to compile this “encyclopaedia of Punjab Police sports”. His effort is laudatory as the bane of Indian sports has been lack of basic data not only about country’s participation in various sporting events — other than cricket — but also about the nation’s outstanding sportsmen and women.

Neither the Indian Olympic Association nor any of its affiliate National Sports Federation maintains any accurate record of its athletes or their performance in world sporting events. Luckily for Mr Gill, he got some inputs from the All-India Police Control Sports Board.

His task was difficult and arduous as the Punjab Police, like the country, witnessed a partition in 1947. Details about achievements of distinguished sportsmen of the pre-Partition Punjab Police were certainly difficult to compile. It goes to the credit of Mr Gill that no piece of unverified information has been included in the book which has been printed on art paper and in full colour.

In yet another sporting gesture, the author has decided to present a copy each of his book to each sportsman and woman mentioned in it besides sending copies to the state Sports Departments, All-India Police Sports Board, sports libraries, all centres of the Sports Authority of India, universities and other important institutions free of cost.

Mr Gill is aptly correct in saying that this book is not only a “history of Punjab Police sports but an encyclopaedia of its sports performance, records and bio-data of its outstanding performers.

On December 8 when the Director-General of Punjab Police, Mr Mahil Singh Bhullar, formally releases the book, a vast majority of “heroes and heroines of Punjab Police sports” would be present at the Indoor Sports Complex of PAP at Jalandhar. As a befitting tribute, those who brought laurels to their organisation between 1947 and 1966 would be felicitated at the formal launch of the book. The number of such sportsmen and women may well be touching the century mark.

The book also contains details of all those Punjab policemen who won Padam Shris and Arjuna Awards for their excellence in playfields.

Nandi, against the Executive Director of the NIS, Col B.S Ahluwalia. The statement of the ED could not be recorded as he was away.

The team reportedly took into possession documents relating to corruption and dope related charges levelled against the ED.

The sleuths were particularly peeved at the manner in which the ED on October 27, 1999, had directed Dr S.K. Nandi, who was in charge of collection of urine samples, not to record anything in writing — a mandatory procedure — when the samples of seven top women weightlifter’s were collected for dope testing. In this context, the vigilance team questioned Dr Pardeep Gupta, who at that time was in charge of the SAI’s dope control lab at New Delhi where the samples were sent for testing. A senior nursing assistant, Mr J.P. Verma, was also thoroughly grilled on the issue, as he had taken the samples from the NIS to the SAI lab.

The vigilance team took into possession documents relating to expenditure incurred by the ED on travel and medical benefits. Documents relating to expenditure on construction of the indoor volleyball hall, synthetic surface, renovation of the swimming pool and wooden flooring of the boxing and table tennis halls were also taken into possession.

The sleuths also took notice of the purchase of personal computers in March 2001. The purchase of 50 Air Conditioners which at present are installed in the institute’s hostels, also came under scrutiny.

The vigilance team was reportedly unhappy over the manner in which the ED ordered the burning of prohibited substances that were found in hostel rooms of national campers in June last year.
