Furore in LS over
‘beating up’ of MP New Delhi, December 10 Speaker Manohar Joshi announced a probe into the incident by a House committee and asked the committee to report back to the House “as early as possible”. As soon as Mr Yadav got up and showed his bandages to inform the House as to what had happened to him yesterday, almost all parties demanded immediate suspension of the “erring” police officials. Allies of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) like the Samata Party, the JD (U), the Trinamool Congress, the TDP and the DMK joined hands with the opposition. Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani expressed regret in the House about the incident and announced that the farmers arrested this morning would be released. Agreeing to the Speaker’s directive to make a statement after ascertaining facts, before the House was adjourned for the day, Mr Advani said he believed that the statement made by Mr Yadav in the House was correct and expressed regret over the entire incident. He said that officials had informed him that no lathi charge took place during the agitation. On the members’ demand for immediate suspension of the police officials concerned, Mr Advani said he would like to hear the erring policemen before taking any action against them. He said he was prepared to order an inquiry in whatever manner the Speaker decided. Earlier, as soon as the House assembled, the entire Opposition as well as members of the JD (U), the Samata, the TDP and the DMK were on their feet, urging the Speaker to suspend question hour and take up discussions on notices given by different members, including Mr Yadav. Mr Yadav informed the House that his personal security officer was also seriously injured in the police lathi charge. Mr Yadav wanted to know whether the people had the right to hold a demonstration in peaceful manner. He also wanted to know from the government what provoked the police to use water cannons, teargas shells, lathis and stones
simultaneously on the crowds, which was peaceful till that time. |
Congress raises BJP’s
issues Sarkhej (Gandhinagar), December 10 Welcome to a Congress rally. These issues are no longer close just to the BJP, but are being raised on a daily basis by not only the Congress candidates here in Gujarat, but also by the Central leaders who are here from Delhi to ensure the defeat of the ruling party here. Unable to counter the Hindutva card of the Narendra Modi-led BJP campaign here, which has had people on their feet, the Congress now seems to have also turned around to take the religious line. Along with it, the Congress has found another combination to add to this line, the caste factor. The Congress leaders have been exhorting voters not only through religious sentiments but also through their castes to cast vote in favour of its candidates. For the purpose, the party has also roped in some of the people who are actively into delivering religious discourses. Take, for example, one gentleman with the name of Chhotte Murari Babu, known for his looks similar to the original Murari Babu. He has turned out to be a star performer at Congress rallies, urging people in the name of religion to vote for the Congress, as he says that not only religion, but also the country is safe in that party’s hands. Although being careful of not treading on the Hindutva line, the Congress seems to have taken a line almost close to it. Knowing clearly that the minority vote is strongly behind it, the Congress wants to attract the majority vote through such statements. The Congress is definitely attempting, in its own way, to pay the BJP back in its own coin. The party which has come power in the state and at the Centre on the basis of Hindutva can only be pushed back through religion seems to be the game plan of the Congress. |
