Security to Ved Pal; Haryana plea rejected Chandigarh, November 26 The security to Mr Ved Pal, on whom a terrorist attack was made on March 9, 1984, was provided on the directions of the High Court in 1996 when the government sought to withdraw the security provided to him. Another attack was made on Mr Ved Pal’s house in Karnal in 1998 when he was the Chairman of the State Agriculture Marketing Board and enjoyed the rank of a Cabinet minister. The state government pleaded in its application that Mr Ved Pal was not in need of security. It said the state-level review committee periodically reviewed the list of protected persons as per threat perceptions to them. Mr Ved Pal’s name, the application said, did not figure in the list of protected persons prepared by the committee. The application further said that the state was facing an acute shortage of manpower. Hence, the state should be allowed to withdraw the security provided to Mr Ved Pal. The application was opposed by Mr G.K. Chatrath, counsel for Mr Ved Pal, on the plea that the Chautala Government was opposed to his client and the application was motivated by political considerations. He alleged that the committee’s report was “manipulated and procured”. Dismissing the application, the Bench said it was not maintainable. |

Mr Hooda said instead of accepting the genuine demands of the farmers, including the payment of their arrears, the government was terrorising the farming community, which had still not forgotten the police atrocities on it at Kandela a few months ago. Demanding immediate release of the arrested farmers, Mr Hooda said the farmers were still waiting for the sugar mills to start the crushing season. The delay, he said, would lead to unrest among cane growers. |
