White Paper on CM’s visits sought
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 12
The Haryana Congress today demanded that the State Government should issue a White Paper on the expenditure incurred by it on the foreign jaunts of the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, in the past three years.

In a statement issued here today the Secretary of the party, Mr Sat Pal Kaushik, said the White Paper must clearly state what had the State achieved out of the foreign visits of Mr Chautala and what was the cost-benefit ratio.

Mr Kaushik said while farmers in the State were suffering, Mr Chautala was enjoying paid holidays on the expenses of the public exchequer. He said a meeting of the State Sugarcane Board, which was convened to fix the cane price, had to be postponed because of the foreign visit of Mr Chautala. He said for the past three years the Chautala Government had not revised the cane price, though the production cost of the farmers had risen many fold during this period.

The Congress leader urged the Governor that in view of the drought conditions in the State, the sugar mills should be asked to start crushing operations immediately.

He also criticised the murderous attack on a former Minister, Mr Phool Chand Mullana, and demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Govt ‘connived’ with dealers
Sale of sprinkler sets to farmers
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 12
The RPI member of the Haryana Assembly, Mr Karan Singh Dalal, today alleged that the Chautala Government had “connived” with unscrupulous manufacturers and dealers in selling sprinkler sets to farmers of southern Haryana at a higher rate.

Talking to newsmen here today, Mr Dalal said the Government had approved different rates of 38 different manufacturers of sprinkler sets of the same specifications. While the rate of the sets supplied by the Haryana Agro Industries Corporation was approved at Rs 414 per piece, the private manufacturers were given rates varying from Rs 435 to Rs 635.

Mr Dalal said it was astonishing that several firms whose higher rates were approved by the Government agreed to supply the same material at much lower rates to the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bhiwani.

Alleging underhand payments to influential persons in Haryana, Mr Dalal said eight of the firms whose rates were approved by the State Government, were supplying the same material at Rs 357 to the Uttar Pradesh Government, which had allowed a uniform rate to all the approved firms.

When the matter was brought to the notice of the Director, Agriculture, a show-cause notice was issued to the firms asking them to explain why they should not be blacklisted and the difference in rate should not be recovered from them. Mr Dalal alleged that when a “deal” was struck with the powers that be, the Agriculture Department dropped the matter and asked the defaulting firms to give an undertaking that they would not sell their products at rates below than those approved by the government.
