CM’s absence will hinder talks: Nain Chandigarh, June 15 Talking to the Tribune from Kandela village, he said during the meeting held between the state government and the BKU yesterday, he felt the official team led by Finance Minister Sampat Singh did not have the power to take any decision regarding the demands raised by the BKU. “They were unsure about how much they could concede and when they would have to obtain clearance from the Chief Minister”, Mr Nain said. The Chief Minister’s tour would not help the negotiations, he said, adding that though he was not averse to holding a dialogue with the government, the Chief Minister’s absence reflected on how serious the government was to resolve the issue. The meeting between the BKU and state government at Jind last night, remained inconclusive due to a disagreement over two major issues — the BKU’s insistence on writing off of electricity arrears and its demand for compensation for the families of BKU supporters killed in police firing. The meeting got over at around 10.30 pm following which Mr Sampat Singh returned to Delhi and met the Chief Minister. The Finance Minister was also slated to accompany Mr Chautala but his visit was cancelled as he had to resolve the deadlock. “Dismissing Mr Nain’s fears that Mr Chautala’s absence would be a hindrance, the Finance Minister said the BKU was told that a 75 per cent waiver scheme could be re-notified for the benefit of farmers but it was unacceptable to the BKU. The BKU delegation, according to Mr Sampat Singh, also demanded withdrawal of the pending cases relating to electricity thefts against the farmers. The government refused to give a blanket assurance but said individual cases might be considered. Delegates led by Mr Nain pointed out that cases against BKU members were yet to be withdrawn in some districts. The government team asked BKU members to bring such instances to the notice of the government so that adequate steps could be taken. Mr Nain maintained that the issue of compensation was crucial for the BKU. Asked about the BKU’s threat to block supplies to Delhi and a 72-hour ultimatum to the government, he said it would be discussed at a meeting tomorrow. Mr Nain also said the BKU was not involved in bringing down a power tower at Khandakheri in Hisar district on Thursday. “We would not have indulged in such the act without prior announcement”, he said. |

Bitta against Indo-Pak bus service Ambala, June 15 Talking to mediapersons, Mr Bitta said the permission for Pakistan planes to fly over Indian territory was due to US pressure. “It is not a wise decision. We must resist US pressure and under no condition should US be allowed to deploy troops on the border,” he said. Mr Bitta said the families of victims of Kaluchak massacre should be provided facilities similar to those provided during the Kargil conflict. “We welcome the decision to make missile man A.P.J. Abdul Kalam the presidential candidate. He is not only an apolitical man, but also has a secular image. This is a significant step and respectable people like retired Chief Justices and scientists should be bestowed suitable opportunities,” he said. Mr Bitta opined that the President should have more powers. “A President should not be a rubber stamp. He should be effective in curbing the misuse of power by others,” he said. Mr Bitta said the Defence Ministry had expressed willingness to impart arms training to the youth so that their services could be utilised in times of need. “The number of youths has swollen from 1800 to 3000. They are prepared to fight for their country,” he said. |

Haryana
gurdwara panel
opposes proposed Act Kurukshetra, June 15 According to them, the HSGPC against the framing of the proposed All-India Sikh Gurdwara Act in its present form, which proposed to bring all historic gurdwaras all over the country under the direct control of the Amritsar-based SGPC. They said, it required redrafting with the involvement of Sikh leaders all over India. It was not the prerogative of the Sikhs in Punjab to decide about matters concerning Sikhs settled all over India and consent of all those who were proposed to be governed was a necessity, they added. They said SGPC lost de-facto control over Sikh gurdwaras in Pakistan in 1947 and de-jure control in 2001. With the creation of Haryana in 1966, the Sikh Gurdwara Act, 1925, became redundant as its jurisdiction was limited to the historic gurdwaras within Punjab. They
further said fed up with the ‘dictatorial attitude’ of the Punjabi
Sikh leadership towards Sikhs in other states, Sikhs in Delhi had
decided to part company with the Amritsar-based SGPC and had formed
the ‘Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. The Akalis, who had
been fighting for more powers to states, were now denying the same to
their Sikh brethren in Haryana by not recognising their right to
administer their gurdwaras, they rued. |
