Hold talks with panel, govt asks BKU Chandigarh, June 6 A press release quoting Mr Rampal Majra, Chief Parliamentary Secretary of Haryana, made the appeal to “Mr Ghasiram Nain and other office-bearers” while urging them “to get their grievances redressed by talking to the four-member committee”. However, when contacted at Kandela, a spokesman of the BKU said that they would respond to Mr Majra’s appeal only if the cases against the BKU leaders registered by the police following the Kandela incident in December and incidents of violence in May were withdrawn by the police. The BKU spokesman said that a number of cases had been registered by the police against each BKU leader since December. Apart from the December incident, they were also booked in connection with incidents which took place in Nagura, Lochab and Alewa villages of Jind district in May. “What if no solution is found through dialogue and we are hounded by the police again,” the spokesman said. He added that Mr Majra had also twice spoken to Mr Nain today on the telephone. Apart from asking Mr Majra for withdrawing the cases against the BKU leaders, Mr Nain had also told the Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) that the talks between the four-member committee and the BKU must take place at Kandela which was declared the “kisan capital” of Haryana by the BKU today, the spokesman said. He said that on the issue of withdrawal of cases against the BKU leaders, Mr Majra had said that he would discuss the matter with the government. |

scheme to increase forest cover Panchkula, June 6 The decision was reportedly taken during a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary of Haryana recently. It has been decided that 5 to 15 per cent of the food allotment in the scheme will be made for forestry activities. This will also include desilting of dams in Panchkula and Yamunanagar districts, besides the afforestation drives in the other districts of the state. Confirming this, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Haryana, Mr J.P.L. Srivastava, said the works to be undertaken would be overseen by the village panchayats. Unemployed youth in villages would be employed by Gram Panchayats for a minimum daily wage of Rs 38 and 7 kg of wheat under the Sampooran Gramin Rozgar Yojana. It may be noted that so far the Food for Work Scheme was being implemented for carrying out development activities in the villages throughout the state. The Gram Panchayats were empowered to take up works like desilting or digging of village ponds, strengthening of ring bunds (phirni) construction of water channels for village ponds, chaupals , earthwork on the phirnis of villages, earth filling of depressions, play grounds etc. It is learnt that saplings of trees like kikar, sheesham and kadam will be planted on panchayat land and other wasteland during this year. A budget of approximately Rs. 4 crore has been set aside for carrying out these activities. A major part of this money will be utilized for desilting and reactivating more than 30 dams in the Shivalik Forest ranges of Panchkula and Yamunanagar. A majority of these dams are lying in the Morni block of Panchkula, it is learnt. These dams help in preventing soil erosion and also store rain water. Officials say notwithstanding the fact that the forest cover of Haryana has increased from 964 square kilometres to over 1500 square kilometres in the past four years, it still represents a mere 3.5 per cent of the total geographical area in the state. Other than this , 4.5 per cent of the geographical area in the state is covered under agro forestry — thus the total forest cover in the state is around 8 per cent. As against this, the National Forest Policy specifically says that the area under forests in each state should be around 20 per cent of the geographical area in the plains. Thus the state Forest Department has a tough road ahead to meet the target. “Besides introducing participatory forestry activities, we are also promoting agro-forestry in the state. There are over 600 Village Forest Committees promoting agro forestry throughout the state and another 600 committees will be constituted this year. Thus eucalyptus and poplar are being intensively grown in the state, “ says Mr

Farm scientists suggest ways to control pests Hisar, June 6 According to the experts of the team which included Dr R.K. Saini, Dr R.S. Jaglan and Dr P.D. Sharma, controlling the pest at this stage was very important since the pest population surviving on these crops might lead to pest population build-up on cotton and other crops. American Bollworm for the past several years had been causing huge loss to the cotton crop in the area. Besides noticing larval population of the pest on seed crop of barseem and its eggs on leaves of bottlegourd, the experts also noticed a significant number of larvae feeding on flowers and young fruits of early crop of okra. Damage by the pest to okra fruit ranged from 8 per cent to 20 per cent. The experts advised the farmers of the area to pick larvae and infested fruits and destroy them
immediately to control the pest. Then the crop should be sprayed with Carbaryl @ 0.1 per cent. However, before spraying the crop the farmers should pluck all fruits or allow a gap of at least one week to pluck fruits after the spray, advised the experts. |
Plea to start work on Dadupur-Nalvi project Kurukshetra, June 6 Stating this in a signed statement released to the mediapersons here today the samiti secretary, Mr Didar Singh Kamboj, said the project was approved at a cost of Rs 1,537 lakh and was proposed to be completed during the seventh Five-Year-Plan (1985-90). For the purpose 184 acres (up to Mustafabad) were acquired to take up the work in hand on a priority basis. However, due to the apathy of successive governments, the scheme could not see the light of the day, he added. Talking about the low-level of the groundwater, Mr Kamboj said since 1980s the groundwater level in this part of Haryana was receding and now the situation was so grim that the existing submersible tubewells could collapse any time. He said if no remedial measures were adopted tubewells of the Public Health Department, which supply drinking water, could collapse any time and this would affect residents in this part of the state. Mr Kamboj further said the executive of the Dadupur-Nalvi Irrigation Scheme project in its meeting held on May 19 at Shahabad Markanda reviewed the situation and decided to approach the Chief Minister again with the request that the Chief Engineer, Irrigation Department, be directed to complete the survey work of the project at the earliest so that it could be completed and dedicated to the farmers by June 30, 2003. |
UHBVN to install electronic meters Panchkula, June 6 It is learnt that the UHBVN has decided to replace at least 5000 meters in all houses where air-conditioners have been installed and other high power consuming buildings here , during the first phase. The meters in the remaining dwelling units and business and commercial establishments will be replaced later on. Senior officials in the department said installing of electronic meters in the township would help curb power thefts and tampering of meters. It is estimated that line losses will come down by approximately two per cent from the present average losses of about 14 per cent . Replacing of electronic meters in Ramgarh and Barwala last year had been marked with violent protests. Road blockades on the Panchkula- Naraingarh highway were organised by the villagers in protest against the change of meters, which they complained gave a higher reading. It was then that the UHVBN held a darbar to satisfy the complaints. The work for installing new meters had been assigned to a private firm and a number of villagers had not allowed them to install the electronic meters. It was then decided that the employees of the department would accompany the employees of the private company. The same will apply this year as well. The UHBVN did not have the stock of electronic meters for the past couple of months. This became a major problem for the department, when people demanded that their meters be replaced. It is now that a stock of 2000 electronic meters has been received by the department. |
