Injured Lee out of Indian tour SYDNEY, Feb 5 (PTI) — An injury to his elbow has come costly for Australian bowling sensation Brett Lee, who will miss the all-important cricket tour of India, and is also doubtful of making it to the Ashes tour of England. Australian Control Board (ACB) release here today said Lee will undergo corrective surgery tomorrow to repair the medial ligament and flexor tendon in his right elbow, which he injured during the tri-series match against Zimbabwe in Perth yesterday. The Aussie squad for the Indian tour is to be selected
tomorrow. Lee’s doctor Trefor James said the injury may take three to six months to heal, throwing doubts on Lee’s participation in the Ashes series too, scheduled to begin late may. “The three months, if you can achieve that makes him available, the six months probably makes him unavailable”, Trefor said. Lee, who was just back from a back injury, which kept him out of three Tests against West Indies in December-January, said the latest injury was “bitter disappointment”. “It’s obviously a set-back but I will be trying to remain as positive as possible and i’ll be looking forward to the series that follow the tour of India. I’m already targeting the tour of the UK for my comeback,” Lee said. Lee injured his elbow while returning the ball from near the boundary during Zimbabwe’s run-chase last afternoon. He remained on the field and bowled a spell late in the match before going off the ground for treatment. Leg-spinner Shane Warne and off-spinner Colin Miller are likely to be the only two slow bowlers Australia take on a three-Test series of India. Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said Australia would probably take a 14-man squad, which would mean leg-spinner Stuart MacGill misses out. “If we can it will be 14, but we have the option of 15,” Hohns said today. “I guess it’s a matter of whether we take an extra bowler but we’ll confer with the captain and coach.” MacGill has taken 75 wickets in 16 Tests, including 16 in four matches during Australia’s recent 5-0 whitewash of the West Indies while Warne was recovering from a broken finger.
Australia, unofficial world Test champions, have won their past 15 Tests.
Aussie cricketers to
wear ice vests PERTH (AFP): Australia’s cricketers are set to wear ice vests during their forthcoming three-Test tour of India, captain Steve Waugh revealed today. Designed to beat the extreme heat and humidity on the sub-continent, they will match the Australian uniforms so they will hardly be noticeable on the field. Australian players are keen to prevent a repetition of the Test in Chennai as during the 1986-87 tour to India, when batsman Dean Jones became so dehydrated during an innings of 210 that he was rushed to hospital with severe dehydration and exhaustion. Waugh said coach John Buchanan has had the vests, which have frozen liquid in strips of tubing that cover the torso, developed from similar ones worn by Australian Football League footballers during pre-season tournaments when weather conditions can be dangerously hot. Australian fast bowlers Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee wore the vests in a trial run during yesterday’s nail-biting one-run win in the tri-nations series one-day match against Zimbabwe here. The temperature in Perth soared to 35 degrees Celsius during the game. McGrath, who promises to be one of Australia’s trump cards in India, said the vests were a great help, especially during long bowling spells. Waugh said the vests would also be used if the side encountered any hot days during this week’s tri-nations finals against the West Indies. “We’ll also take them over there (to India) and see if they work,” he said. “We’ve got two lead-up matches and if they make the guys cool down and feel better about themselves we’ll probably use them.” McGrath said Waugh’s plan to blitz the Indians with pace meant the new ball bowlers would have a heavy workload. McGrath said he welcomed the opportunity to become accustomed to the vests before the tour to India which begins later this month. “I am used to a dry heat in Australia,” he said. “India has a humid heat, and the vests will really help if you can wear them for an over or two to cool down.” |
Laxman appointed
India ‘A’ skipper MUMBAI, Feb 5 (UNI) — VVS Laxman will lead the India ‘A’ against the Australians in the three-day tour opener from
February 17 to 19. The team was announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jaywant Lele in the presence of chairman of selection committee Chandu Borde, here today. Nayan Mongia after being absolved of the match-fixing allegations has been chosen as the wicketkeeper. Debashish Mohanty, who had having a great domestic season, would lead the pace attack in this match along with Delhi’s Asish Nehra. Javed Zaman has also been chosen despite not being in the camp probables or any of the three teams to participate in the Challenger one-day series. When asked about this, the chairman of the selection committee Chandu Borde said, “We have included him after seeing his performance in the Duleep Trophy.’’ The team: VVS Laxman (capt), S. Ramesh, S.S. Das, D. Mohanty, H. Badani, M. Kaif, Nayan Mongia, D. Mohanty, A. Nehra, R. Sanghvi, Harbhajan Singh, S. Balaji Rao, G. Khoda, Javed Zaman. On the non-inclusion of the Mumbai players, Mr Borde said: “We will be seeing them in action during the three-day match against the Australians to be played from February 22 to 24 at the Brabourne stadium here.’’ He said that the committee did consider players like Sairaj Bahutule and Wasim Jaffer but since they would be getting a chance to play against the Australians in Mumbai the committee thought of giving some other boys a chance. Mr Borde also clarified on certain comments attributed to him and Indian coach, John Wright about the type of wickets they had asked to be prepared for the Test series, saying that reports were false. |
Test team selection
on February 19 MUMBAI, Feb 5 (PTI) — The India team for the first cricket Test against Australia, to be played at Wankhede Stadium here from February 27 to March 3 will be picked on February 19 — the third and final day of the India-A and Australia match at Nagpur. Cricket board secretary Jaywant Lele and selection committee Chairman Chandu Borde announced here today that the Board President XI team for a three-day tour match against Australia in Delhi from March 6 to 8 will also be announced along with the Indian team. “With the cancellation of the tri-nation Sharjah tourney (in aid of the Gujarat earthquake victims) the conditioning camp for the 25 probables for the Indian team would be held at Chennai from February 7 to 11 followed by the Challenger Trophy tournament at the same venue from February 12 to 15,” Lele said after the Selection Committee met here today. “The conditioning camp will resume after the Challenger Trophy while the players selected to represent the India-A squad for the three-day match would proceed to Nagpur,” Lele added. “The players selected for first Test will then assemble in Mumbai on February 20 and practice at Wankhede Stadium till February 25,” he added. Players like Sairaj Bahutule (the leg spinner who got six wickets including a hat-trick in the West vs East Duleep Trophy match at Pune on Saturday), veteran spinner Narendra Hirwani and W.D. Balaji Rao of Tamil Nadu and others could be considered for the Delhi tie,” he added. “Our main idea is to try out as many players as possible before the three-Test home series,” Borde said. Borde also denied instructing the associations hosting the three Tests to prepare flat pitches to neutralise the Aussies’ superiority in both pace and spin while Lele said the board had asked the Vidarbha Cricket Association to prepare a sporting wicket for the tour opener at Nagpur. BANGALORE,

Cup name row sparks protest SEOUL, Feb 5 (AFP) — South Korean football fans staged a demonstration outside the Japanese Embassy in Seoul today demanding the 2002 World Cup final be taken away from Japan because of a dispute about the tournament’s name. But despite a warning from South Korean soccer chiefs that they might seek to re-negotiate an agreement to allow Japan to stage the final, Japanese organisers insisted they would await a verdict on the dispute by football’s world governing body, FIFA. About a dozen placard-waving football fans shouted anti-Japanese slogans outside the Japanese Embassy in central Seoul. “Japan must return the final to South Korea,” said one banner. The co-hosts are in dispute because Japan wants to put its name first in the event title on tickets and other material to be sold in Japan. Under an accord when they were jointly awarded finals in 1996, the tournament is to be called the “2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan “. The opening match is in South Korea but Japan won the right to host the final. Korean World Cup organising committee (KOWOC) co-chairman Chung Mong-Joon, a FIFA vice-president, sidestepped questions on the dispute at a Press conference to give details of ticket sales which start on February 15. Japan is now saying it will await the decision of a FIFA executive committee on March 15. And at the weekend an official KOWOC spokesman said that if Japan raised the issue at the executive committee South Korea could raise the issue of the venue for the final. In Tokyo, a Japanese World Cup organising committee (JAWOC) official told AFP today, “this is a matter to be settled not by Japan or South Korea, but by FIFA. I heard that there was a demonstration at the Japanese Embassy today. I hope that the two countries do not waste energy on such things.” He added, “JAWOC hopes this will be settled as quickly as possible. We understand that FIFA will make a final decision when its top officials are to meet next month. “Japan is ready to follow their decision. But we believe our claim is common sense. For example, in Japan, the security treaty between Japan and the USA is called Japan-US Security Treaty. In the USA, its name is the other way round (US-Japan Security Treaty).” Despite the official comments, there is concern in South Korea that the dispute should be settled to avoid derailing organisations for the first co-hosting of a World Cup and the first to be held in Asia. The Korea Herald newspaper called for a compromise and said in an editorial, “the controversy has already shown signs of developing into a major row between the people of the two countries”. FIFA is said to have proposed a compromise saying the Japanese organisers could remove the country names from domestic promotional literature. JAWOC rejected the move. |
