Rohan shocks Sunil
By Arvind Katyal

CHANDIGARH, Feb 1 — Exhaustion was writ large on the face of top seed and pride of Chandigarh, Sunil Kumar, who today succumbed to sixth seed Rohan Gajjar also of India in the semifinals of the boys singles on the penultimate day of the Drish ITF Junior Tennis Tournament played here at the CLTA courts, Sector 10.

However city tennis fans had something to cheer about when another city player, Amanjot Singh, third seed made mincemeat of 11th seed Ivan Kokurin of Uzbekistan to set up a clash with Rohan in the final.

The girls doubles title went in favour of top seed Sania Mirza and Sasha Abraham of India who got the better of fourth seed Sandy Gumulya and Septi Nindya of Indonesia in straight sets at the clay courts. Sania also moved into the singles final and will take on Megha Vakharia also of India in the final slated to be held tomorrow morning.

The girls semifinals proved to be very exciting with both the semifinals clinging for more than 200 minutes. However, it went on justifiable lines when top seed Sania Mirza and second seed Megha Vakharia overpowered third seed Rebecca Dandeniya of Great Britain and Olga Dzyuba of Kazakstan, respectively, with both matches extending to three sets.

The first boys semifinal between Sunil and Rohan lasted 75 minutes.

In the first set, Sunil first broke the serve at 2-1, Rohan coached by Sandeep Kirtane, a former player of repute, started giving harrowing moments to former Davis cupper Sunil by first levelling at 2-2, then continued to surge ahead till 5-3. Then Sunil again broke to reduce the margin to 4-5. The high lobs and baseline deep volleys of Mumbai's Mithibai College student Rohan proved fatal for Sunil who went down fighting thereby disappointing local fans at 4-6 in 39 minutes.

At this moment, everyone at the CLTA who were otherwise just waiting for Sunil to win were shocked.

In the second set, Rohan who in the last ITF meet at Delhi lost to unseeded Saurabh Singh of Chandigarh played a calculative and neat game which forced Sunil to commit unforeseen blunders taking the upswing at 3-1. The cool-tempered Sunil who learnt the rudiments of tennis at CLTA tried to dislodge sixteen-and-half-year-old Gajjar and was able to level at 4-4. As luck would have it, a few of the high returns of 46th ranked Sunil went outside the court who could not withstand the pressure of playing against Rohan, otherwise ranked lower at 191th. Finally, the day belonged to Rohan who wrapped the second set in 36 minutes and the match. After the win, Rohan said that he was quite confident of winning and it was his second encounter after three years wth Sunil whom he met earlier at Amritsar. He said that in May next he would turn 17 years and this was his sixth ITF meet. Rohan latter sailed into the doubles final along with his partner, Vikrant Sane, and will again crosss swords with Sunil Kumar and Vinod Sewa in the final. The second semifinal in boys singles played between Amanjot and Ivan proved to be one-sided affair with the lanky city boy, Amanjot beating Uzbekistan player in all departments of the game. Amanjot grabbed an early lead of 4-0 and was then able to conquer the first set in just 22 minutes at 6-1 by conceding only one more game. The second was even more lopsided with otherwise hot tempered Amanjot thrashing young Ivan in 21 minutes to become the only Chandigarh player to move into singles final.

Results: Singles — Boys: Rohan Gajjar (Ind) b Sunil Kumar (Ind) 6-4, 6-4; Amanjot Singh (Ind) b Ivan Kokurin (Uzb) 6-1, 6-0.

Girls: Sania Mirza (Ind) b Rebecca Dandeniya (Gbr) 4-6, 6-4, 6-1; Megha Vakharia (Ind) b Olga Dzyuba (Kaz) 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Boys doubles: Sunil Kumar and Vinod Sewa (Ind) b A. Mohammed (Oma) and Adam Jaya (Mas) 7-6, 7-5; Vikrant Sane and Rohan Gajjar (Ind) b Dannio Yahya (Mas) and Ivan Kovalav (Kaz) 7-6, 6-2.

Girls doubles (Final): Sania Mirza and Sasha Abraham (Ind) b S Gumulya and Septi Yutima (Ina) 6-1,7-6

Bagan, Mahindras post wins

KOLKATA, Feb 1 (UNI) — Reigning champions Mohun Bagan registered their third consecutive victory when they trounced State Bank of Travancore 3-0 in the National Football League at the Salt Lake Stadium here today.

Barreto fired the first salvo in the third minute to give Bagan the lead, while Debjit Ghosh and R.P. Singh buttressed the lead for the soccer titans in the 32nd minute and 75th minutes respectively.

Dodging past a defender, Barreto latching off to a Basudeb Mondal pass unleashed a piledriver from inside the penalty area, which banged in (1-0).

Rennedy Singh’s flag kick was beautifully nodded home by Debjit Ghosh (2-0).

R.P. Singh struck the last nail on the bank coffin, when his blockbuster beat the advancing goalie (3-0). This was the fourth outing for both the teams.

While Bagan earned 10 points with three wins and one draw, the bank team bagged two points with two draw and as many losses.

The bank team also effected several goal-bound opportunities, but Bagan goalie manned the bar magnificently.

Star-studded Mohun Bagan maintaining their supremacy in all the departments of the game stormed into the rival fort time and again and opened several scoring chances during the 90-minute match. Incidentally, barring three goals they scored, most of their attempts were futile.

MUMBAI: Mahindras United today posted their first win beating Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) of Banglore 1-0 in the National Football League (NFL) here at the Cooperage.

Mahindras, who were distinctly lucky not not lose the lead in the dying minute of the game, when a left footed drive off a long corner from Irqui player Majid Amodaa thudded on the post. The home team dominated the first half with a goal by Manjit in the 15th minute.

FC Kochin win

KOCHI, (PTI): FC Kochin continued their winning spree as they edged past a fighting Air India 2-1 in an evenly contested match in the fifth National Football League tie at the Nehru Stadium here tonight.

After a barren first half, medio Liberian Eugin Gray scored the lead for the Kochin team through a header in the 68th minute and striker Aaron Cole consolidated their position in the 80th minute while Air-India’s captain Khalid Jamil scored the consolation goal for his team in the 89th minute.

Sachin, Kambli slam tons

PUNE, Feb 1 (UNI) — Sachin Tendulkar showed he was still in grand touch by slamming a whirlwind knock of 199 and south paw Vinod Kambli’s quickfire unbeaten 105 helped West Zone pile up 384 for 4 against East Zone on the opening day of their four-day Duleep Trophy league tie, which got underway at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here today.

Sachin, who was well set for his maiden double ton in the Duleep Trophy, however, was rather unlucky to have missed it falling to a brillaint running catch brought off by substitute fielder Mridul Gupta in the extra cover region off off spinner Sanjay Raul in the 79th over of the day.

Sachin and Vinod Kambli (105) association snatched the match from the rivals grasp adding 225 runs for the fourth wicket in 253 balls in 170 minutes and guided their side into a strong position.

Skipper Sachin displayed his intention of taking the match very seriously opted to take the strike first after winning the toss on a hurriedly prepared Nehru Stadium track. It appeared that his decision would backfire as test opener Wasim Jaffer fell to the very first delivery of lanky speedster Debashish Mohanty which moved away a bit late beating the batsman on the forward stroke and wicket keeper Deep Dasgupta made no mistake.

The other opener Nayan Mongia, who was promoted to open the innings, however, found the rival pace attack a difficult proposition to cope with and fell to a smarth catch at covers off seamer Javed Zaman with his personal score on 7 and the team total on 19 from 11.4 overs. Both Mohanty with his tail up after capturing all 10 wickets against South Zone in the earlier league tie and Zaman gave some anxious moments to both left hander Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who came in after the departure of Wasim and Sachin who trooped in after the fall of Mongia. The pair made a partial recovery putting on 127 runs for the third wicket, which came in 163 balls and 124 minutes.

East zone led by Test opener Siv Sunder Das in absence of their mainstay Saurav Ganguly would have been in comfortable position had they latched on to the chances offered by the rampaging Sachin and Kambli. Sachin earned the reprieve off Raul when on 103 dropped by Rohan Gavaskar at mid off. Likewise Kambli when on 57 was let off by Zaman at short mid wicket offseamer Mohanty with West total at 280 for 3.

West Zone (first innings):

Wasim Jaffer c Deep Dasgupta b Mohanty 0, Nayan Mongia c Sukhwinder Singh b Zaman 7, Hrishikesh Kanitkar lbw Sukhwinder Singh 42, Sachin Tendulkar c (sub) M. Gupta b Raul 199, Vinod Kambli Batting 105, Jacob Martin batting 2.

Extras: (byes 6, lb 8, nb 15) 29.

Total: (for 4 wickets in 90 overs and 388 minutes) 384.

Fall of wickets: 1/0, 2/19, 3/146, 4/371.

Bowling: Debashish Mohanty 15-6-47-1 (4 nb), Javed Zaman 14-2-78-1 (4 nb), P. Jaichandra 5-1-17-0 (4 nb), Sukhwinder Singh 17-1-87-1 (2 nb), Utpal Chatterjee 21-6-68-0 (1 nb), Sanjay Raul 14-1-60-1, Rohan Gavaskar 4-0-13-0.

South Zone all out for 141

PANAJI: Central Zone today bundled out South Zone for a paltry 141 and then gained a lead of 36 runs after making 178 for two on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy match here.

Medium pacers Devendra Bundela (four for 58 and Jaiprakash Yadav (three for 46) first damaged the South and then opener Gagan Khoda made a patient unbeaten 87 to keep the upper hand.Top

Indian colts face England

HYDERABAD, Feb 1 (UNI) — Buoyant Indian colts will take on battle-scarred England in the first one-day under-19 cricket match which gets underway at the Lal Babahdur Stadium here tomorrow.

The Indian boys, fresh from a 1-0 win in their just-concluded three-Test series, certainly look more self-assured but coach Roger Binny is wary of their being over-confident.

“It will be a keen match tomorrow though member in our team is confident of winning the first encounter. Our top six batsman should get runs and that will make things easy for us”, he noted.

Binny expressed happiness over opener Gautam Ghambir and Vinayak Mane being in good nick. “They should give a solid start so that the rest of the batsman can chip in for a big score. Winning the toss would not make any difference as this is a perfect track”.

It is likely that there would be changes in the team that played the Test series. Local lad N. Arjun Yadav would be playing his first international game tomorrow, the coach said, adding that either Dharmichand or off-spinner Amit Mishra could be dropped.

England, on the other hand would be regrouping themselves. The young side has clicked in patches and their fielding is much better as compared to the home team.

England skipper Ian Bell, opener John Sadler, Nick Peng and Garry Pratt would be the main stay of their batting while medium-pacers Justin Bishop and Andrew MaGarry should bowl their hearts out.

Originally the match was to played in Gujarat but the BCCI was forced to shift all the three one-dayers to Andhra Pradesh. The first and third would be played in Hyderabad while the second would be played at Vijayawada on February 4.

The final 11 would be announced from the following, just before the commencement of the match.

India: Ajay Ratra (capt), Vinayak Mane, Gautam Gambhir, Vidyut Sivaramankrishnan, Dharmichand, Nitin Agarwal, Siddarth Trivedi, A. Nayudu, Amit Mishra, A. Das, Maninder Singh, Manvinder Bisla, N. Arjun Yadav and A. Deshpande.

England: Ian Bell (capt) Mark Wallace, Neil Penggilender, Kadeer Ali, Gary Pratt, Monty Panesar, Ian Pattison, John Sadler, Justin Bishop, Chris Tremlett, Gordon Muchall, Andrew McGarry, Mohd N. Malik, Robert S. Ferley and Kyle Hogg.

Black faces fitness test

PERTH, Feb 1 (AFP) — Marlon Black and Mahendra Nagamootoo face fitness tests before taking their place in the West Indies line-up for the crucial tri-nations one-day clash against Zimbabwe tomorrow.

West Indies’ captain Jimmy Adams said here today selectors wanted to make sure that 25-year-old fast bowler Black had recovered from a shoulder injury and leg-spinner Nagamootoo would not be hampered by an injured toe.

The day-night match is a virtual mini-final which will determine which side qualifies to take on the all-conquering Australia in the best-of-three finals starting in Sydney on Wednesday.

West Indies have won only two of their first seven matches, while Zimbabwe have single victory from six matches.

If Zimbabwe win tomorrow’s clash, they are likely to edge into the finals because of a superior run rate.

"It is a must-win situation for both of us, and that should make for some very good cricket," Adams said.

"It’s do-or-die now. You don’t draw one-day games and here will be a result. Whoever wins, goes on - we are very aware of that.

Zimbabwe skipper Heath Streak said his side was also aware of the game’s importance: "We also have to win to stay in contention, so it’s a big game for us — definitely a sort of final before the finals.

"We are encouraged by our batting performance against Australia in Hobart on Tuesday," he said in reference to Zimbabwe making 279 for six despite losing by six wickets.

"So far we have not put all three departments (batting, bowling and fielding) together in one game. When we can get all three departments going, I feel sure we can give opponents a real run for their money."

Adams said he believed the West Indies would have an advantage over Zimbabwe because the Caribbean players had already played two matches, including a Test, on the bouncy WACA wicket this season.

Streak however downplayed the issue and said he felt his players would be able to cope.

"We have played here before. Obviously it is a bit different from other pitches — there is a bit more bounce and pace. The guys are professional players, and I hope they can make the adjustment pretty quickly."

Despite the West Indies’ 5-0 hammering by Australia in the Test series, Adams was keen to emphasise that the tour had not been a complete disaster.

"One of the most important things we have managed to do is to keep the team together," he said.

Chappell’s regret

MELBOURNE, Feb 1 (Reuters) — Former Australia captain Greg Chappell said today that if he could change one decision in his life, it would be not ordering the infamous underarm delivery 20 years ago.

Chappell told his brother Trevor to bowl underarm along the ground for the final delivery of a limited overs international against New Zealand on February 1, 1981. The action prevented tailender Brian McKechnie hitting the six runs required for a tie in the first match of the finals series.

“If I had my time again I wouldn’t do it. Unfortunately I didn’t have the luxury of a second guess at it, but at that stage I didn’t care,’’ Chappell was quoted as saying in the Herald Sun today.

Australian newspapers paid tribute today to the underarm — one of the most infamous incidents in the country’s history.

The incident prompted the then New Zealand Prime Minister Robert Muldoon to express his displeasure to Australian counterpart Malcolm Fraser.

Greg Chappell said a tough schedule that summer and ongoing negotiations with officials over playing conditions had left him “mentally unfit’’ to be captain that day.

McKechnie, a strongly-built batsman who also played rugby for the All-Blacks, said he would not have been able to clear the boundary on the huge Melbourne Cricket Ground even against a normal delivery.

But he added that an incident earlier in the match, when the Kiwis thought they had dismissed the Australian skipper had added to the intensity of the match. Chappell went on to make 90.

“Well I was disgusted at the time ... but an hour after the game we were just sort of joking about it,’’ McKechnie said on Australian television.

Trevor Chappell, a three-Test veteran and the lesser-known younger brother of Australian captains Ian and Greg, said at least it meant he was famous for something.

Australian wicketkeeping great Rod Marsh, now head coach at Australia’s cricket academy, said the only positive to come from the incident was the rule change outlawing the ploy.

Wright’s stance

CHENNAI, Feb 1 (PTI) — Players who perform well in the Challenger cricket series and the two three-day fixtures against the visiting Australians too have a chance of making it, coach John Wright said yesterday.

Apart from the probables, who have been selected for the five-day camp here from February 6, others who perform well in the Hero Honda Challenger Series (February 12-15) could get into the Indian team, he told reporters here.

“Anil Kumble will not be fit for the series. Now we have to think of the talents available and pick the best for the coming matches, as the series against the Australians is a challenging one,” he said.

“Myself and captain Saurav Ganguly held discussions with Chandu Borde, Chairman, Selection Committee, on this subject (on Kumble being not available). Seven spinners have been given to us and the best ones will be in the final team,” he said.

On the duration of the camp, Wright said “even camps of shorter durataion help players to be together and work out plans and strategies. In fact, we might have another camp after the Challenger series is over, before we play the Aussies in the first Test in Mumbai from March 6.”

Asked to comment on the presence of a leg spinner among the probables, Wright said: “It is the job of the selection committee to decide as to who should be in the team”.

Wright, who had watched Indians, said “there has been a lot of improvement in fielding. But, they have to show accuracy and consistency in that department, especially against the strong Australian team”.

Off-colour Woods commands admiration

WAILEA (Hawaii), Feb 1 (Reuters) — Tiger Woods may be enduring the worst spell of his career for several years but he still commands the admiration of the great names of golf.

When Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Hale Irwin got together for a senior skins game in Hawaii last weekend, the talk was all of the young Woods’s fantastic year in 2000.

“What Tiger did last year will be around for a long time,” said Nicklaus of Woods’s nine PGA Tour wins last year which included three major titles.

Player, too, was deeply impressed by the world No 1. “I’ll tell you what happened to me. I was on my ranch last year in South Africa, and that’s where I go to get totally away from golf.

“I don’t think it, play it or anything but last year I stayed up until 2 am to watch Tiger in the PGA Championship and I’ve never stayed up until 2 in the morning to watch any man play golf.”

“He certainly does have an effect on people watching on TV,” added Irwin. “I wish I had the same effect.”

None of the veterans, who won more than 150 PGA Tour titles and dozens of major championships between them, sees Woods going off the boil for long, despite his poor start to 2001.

After last year’s triumphs, the 25-year-old American finished only joint eighth in the Mercedes Championship in Kapalua last month and was 13 strokes behind winner Mark Calcavecchia in joint fifth at the Phoenix Open last week — his biggest deficit since he joined the professional ranks in 1996.

Woods has now gone five PGA tour events without winning in his worst spell since mid 1998 to early 1999.

“It’s a fickle, very funny game at times,” said Player. “Tiger’s game is very solid but we all know there is no predicting golf.”

But the South African firmly expects Woods to come back.

“Golf is a confidence game. It’s all about confidence and Tiger oozes with confidence, more than anybody out there,” Player said.

Nicklaus agreed. “He has a lot of confidence and a lot of will to win. I always wanted to do better than the year before and so does Tiger,” said the American, who was Woods’s boyhood hero.

Nicklaus, winner of an unmatched 18 majors, believes that Woods, who would hold all four golf majors if he wins the Masters in April, is going to have another great season.

“I always thought it was easier to come back after a good year on the Tour,” said Nicklaus, who won seven PGA tournaments in both 1972 and 1973.

“I was always full of confidence after a great season and I would think Tiger is the same way. I would look forward to a new year because I would always think I could do better.”

Nicklaus won at least one PGA event a year for 17 straight years. His last pga Tour victory came in 1986 when he captured his sixth Masters title at the age of 46.

Palmer, who won eight times in 1960, five in 1961 and seven the following year, said the true test of a great golfer was their ability to recover from a setback in their career.

“I must have come back six, eight times in my career when the media said I was finished,” said Palmer, now 71. “I admire Tiger for coming back after the first Masters to have a great year last year.”

Three-times US Open champion Irwin, the youngest of the quartet at 55 and the winner in Hawaii, offered Woods a little advice.

“Sometimes it’s harder to get going at the beginning of the year because after a great season you have to stop, take a breath and start again at zero. That’s what Tiger is doing right now.”

Soccer body’s plea to Orissa CM

CUTTACK, Feb 1 (UNI) — The Orissa State Women Football Association (OSWFA) has sought Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s intervention to thwart the All-India Football Federation’s move to stop the 25th Senior National Football Championship beginning here tomorrow on the grounds of it being “unauthorised”.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, OSWFA secretary Sahadev Raut clarified that their association was affiliated to the Women Football Federation of India which had no relation to the AIFF headed by Mr Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi.

Taking exception to Mr Dasmunshi’s recent letter to Orissa Director of Sports Kulamani Deo to stop the championship in the state, OSWFA President Ashirbad Behera declared the championship would be held in Rourkela and Rajkanika as per schedule and threatened to move court against the AIFF and those conspiring against staging the national event of the WFFI headed by Kirti Azad.

Soon after receiving the fax message from Mr Dasmunsi, Mr Deo directed the concerned district authorities to take appropriate action in the matter. Mr Deo in his letter to the organisers of the championship — the State Sports and Youth Services Minister and the AIFF President — said his directorate would not recognise the national championship.

Mr Behera, who is also the secretary of the Orissa Olympic Association, said all the 20 state teams participating in the championship being held for the first time in Orissa, had already arrived.

The 12-day championship for the S.R. Zaidi Trophy would be played on a league-cum-knock-out basis at Rourkela in Sundargarh and Rajkanika in Kendrapara district. The final would be played at Rourkela on February 11, Mr Behera said.Top
