Yuvraj dropped; Mongia, Mohanty return
25 probables selected for series against Aussies

MUMBAI, Jan 29 (PTI) — Dashing batsman Yuvraj Singh and off-spinner Nikhil Chopra were conspicuous by their absence in the list of 25 probables announced by the cricket board here today for a conditioning camp in preparation for the home series against Australia.

However, stumper Nayan Mongia, who has been exonerated from charges of match-fixing, was selected.

Yuvraj, who shone in a couple of tournaments after making a sensational debut during the ICC knock-out tournament in Nairobi in October last year, has struggled with his form since then.

In the home series against Zimbabwe, he was not considered for both the Tests and aggregated just 62 runs from four innings at an average of 15.50 in the one-dayers, his highest being 29 in the last match at Rajkot.

Nikhil Chopra, who was kept out of the team following allegations of his involvement in match-fixing scandal, has also not been picked up though he too has been exonerated by the CBI and cricket board’s internal inquiry by its anti-corruption commissioner K. Madhavan.

Meanwhile, in-form medium pacer Debashish Mohanty and veteran left-arm spinner Venkatpathy Raju were among the probables selected for the camp to be held at Chennai from February 6 to 11 and 16 to 20 with the three-team Challenger Trophy sandwiched in between.

UNI adds: The probables, which were announced today, also includes leg spinner from Karnataka Balaji Rao. Debashish Mohanty, who is having a dream season has also forced his way back into the Indian probables.

The selectors have decided to cast their net wide to find spinning options in the absence of India’s No I spinner Anil Kumble, choosing as many as seven spinners for the camp. They have also recalled Venkatpathy Raju back from the cold.

The probables: Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, S. Ramesh, S.S. Das, V.V.S. Laxman, D. Mongia, H. Badani, J. Srinath, Z. Khan, A. Agarkar, D. Mohanty, A. Nehra, V. Prasad, Sharandeep Singh, N. Mongia, Vijay Dahiya, Rahul Singhvi, M. Kartik, Balaji Rao, Surinder Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Venkatpathy Raju, S. Joshi, and Mohammad Kaif.

The probables were announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, Mr Jaywant Lele.

Answering queries the chairman of selectors Chandu Borde said “We will be trying to experiment on different wickets and then decide what type of wickets we will have for the Australian series.”

On the non-inclusion of players like Wasim Jaffer, Mr Borde said since the Australians would be playing against Mumbai in Mumbai, we can have a look at their performance over here.

On the reported statement of Ganguly that he would have preferred to have the camp at some other place, Mr Lele said Ganguly was present at today’s meeting and was happy with the venue.

The Indian team for the first Test will be selected during the match between India ‘A’ and Australia from February 17 to 19.

Rathore
to keep in Challenger

MUMBAI, Jan 29 (UNI) — There is a shortage of wicketkeepers in India if you go by the Challenger Trophy teams selected for the Hero Honda Challenger one-day series to be played in Chennai from February 12 to 15.

Vikram Rathore, the Punjab opening bastman, who once played for India has come back into the reckoning albeit this time as a Wicketkeeper finding a place in the India ‘B’ team.

The selectors, who selected the three teams — India Seniors, India “A” and India “B” here today seemed to have overlooked the credentials of the young Haryana keeper Ajay Ratra as well as M.S.K. Prasad, who was India’s No 1 wicketkeeper just a year back.

Nikhil Chopra and Nayan Mongia, who were recently absolved of the match-fixing charges, find a place in the India ‘B’ and India ‘A’ teams, respectively.

Also finding a place in the India Senior team is Ashish Kapoor the Tamil Nadu off spinner.

The three prima donnas of Indian cricket Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar will lead the Indian Seniors, India ‘A’ and India ‘B’, respectively.

The Chairman of the selection committee Chandu Borde, when asked about the inclusion of Vikram Rathore as an wicketkeeper, replied that he was doing well with the bat and has also kept wickets, ‘so lets see, how he performs.’

On preference to Vikram Rathore over Ajay Ratra, Mr Borde said Ratra was still young. We did not not discuss him at all.

When told about Srinath’s non preference for the one-day game, Mr Borde said: We have selected him let us see.

He also said the India ‘A’ team to play the visiting Australians will be selected during the Challenger Trophy.

The Challenger Trophy would be played under lights, Mr Lele added.

The teams:

India Seniors: Saurav Ganguly (c), S.S. Das, Yuveraj Singh, Hemang Badani, V.V.S. Laxman, Virendra Shewag, Vijay Dahiya (w-k), Ashish Kapoor, D. Mohanty, J. Srinath, Z. Khan, S. Joshi.

India “A”: Rahul Dravid (c), S. Ramesh, S. Sriram, J. Martin, R. Sodhi, H. Kanitkar, N. Mongia (w-k), V. Prasad, A. Agarkar, I. Siddique, R. Singhvi, Balaji Rao.

Anand disposes of Van Wely in style

WIJK ANN ZEE (Netherlands), Jan 29 (PTI) — World champion Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand quickly disposed of the challenge of GM Loek Van Wely of the Netherlands in the 13th and final round of the Corus Grandmasters group ‘A’ chess tournament here today.

Former world champion GM Gary Kasparov of Russia played a nail-biting draw with GM Michael Admas of England to clinch the title with 9 points from 13 games. Anand was half a point behind Kasparov on 8.5 points.

Anand is sure of a joint second place but sole possession of second spot depends upon the outcome of the game between Braingames champion GM Vladimir Kramnik of Russia and Dutch GM Jeroen Piket, who were involved in an interesting duel in the last round.

Anand’s finish has been exemplary. He won the last three games to end the tournament in style.

All his victories have come over the Dutch opponents.

Playing white, Anand employed the fashionable English attack against the English attack of Van Wely and caught him off guard in the middlegame.

Van Wely conducted the Queenside attack with a routine pawn roll but found to his amazement that his backward queen pawn paved way for white to capture key squares in the center.

Anand obtained a positional advantage by the 20th move and then slowly started squeezing his opponent. Van Wely exchanged a three minor pieces but lost a pawn by force in the process.

Anand thwarted the further counterattacking attempts by Van Wely in copybook fashion.

Undeterred by the rook penetration by Van Wely on the seventh rank, Anand continued to hold the initiative and his extra pawn soon gave him a decisive advantage.

In trying to avoid further exchange of pieces Van Wely found his rook trapped on the edge of the board and resigned on the 34th move.

Kasparov and Adams played an exciting variation of the Catalan opening before signing the peace in 27 moves while Grandmaster Peter Leko of Hungary drew with GM Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria in a Grunfeld defence game with black pieces.

Grandmaster Sergei Tiviakov of the Netherlands sealed his tournament with a fine victory over GM Alexei Federov of Bulgaria in an off beat variation against the Sicilian defence with white pieces.

After making his second grandmaster norm, 14-year-old international master P. Harikrishna of India drew his final game against IM Bosboom Manuel of the Netherlands to finish fifth in the overall standings of the Corus Grandmaster B Chess tournament here.

GM Mikhail Gurevich of Belgium played a quick draw with IM Van Der Weide Karel of the Netherlands to stamp his authority in the tournament.

Gurevich tallied 8 points out of a possible 11 and earned himself a seat in the next year’s group ‘A’ tournament where he will match wits with the best in the world.

IM Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan finished a clear second with a well-crafted victory over Nico Vink of the Netherlands. Interestingly, Radjabov comes from Kasparov’s birthplace Baku.

Kasparov was pleased with the performance of his country cousin and the fact that he finished higher than Harikrishna. “I’m glad to see that once again the boy from Baku came ahead of the boy from India!” the highest-rated chess player in the world said, referring to Viswanathan Anand finishing second to him in the senior tournament.

Results final round:

Mikhail Gurevich 8 drew Karel Van der Weide 6; Thomas Luther 7 drew Friso Nijboer 7; P. Harikrishna 6.5 drew Manuel Bosboom 5; Boris Gulko 5.5 drew Yge Visser 4; Nico Vink 2.5 lost to T. Radjabov 7.5; Erik Hoeksema 1.5 lost to Dennis De Vreugt 5.5.

Azhar challenges life ban in court

HYDERABAD, Jan 29 (IANS) — Former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin filed a suit in a court here today challenging the life ban imposed on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for his alleged involvement in the match-fixing scandal.

Azharuddin filed the suit two months after the ban was imposed, contending that there was “no basis” for the action. “The punishment given by the BCCI is harsh and discriminating,” counsel T. Jagdish told IANS. The BCCI’s anti-corruption commissioner K. Madhavan and BCCI President A.C. Muthiah have been made parties to the suit.

The ban was imposed after Mr Madhavan submitted a report on a probe conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) last year into the match-fixing scandal. The CBI had named five Indian cricketers — Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Nayan Mongia, Manoj Prabhakar and Ajay Sharma — as being involved in match-fixing. Mr Madhavan, however, cleared Mongia and recommended action against the other four. The BCCI then slapped a life ban on Azharuddin and suspended Jadeja, Prabhakar and Sharma for five years.

Mr Jagdish said that there were “illegalities” in the inquiry conducted by Mr Madhavan. “There is no provision in the BCCI rules for conducting such an inquiry. A disciplinary committee of the board should have conducted the inquiry,” he said.

He said Mr Madhavan’s inquiry was not an independent probe. “The BCCI merely endorsed the report of the CBI,” he said, adding that Mr Madhavan had conducted the inquiry in an arbitrary manner.

Mr Jagdish also pointed out that the CBI had not indicted Azharuddin. “No case was made out against the players and the report clearly said no case can be made out either under the Gambling Act or the Indian Penal Code,” he added.

The match-fixing scandal had been broken by the Delhi police last year when they released transcripts of conversations that had taken place between then South African captain Hansie Cronje and a bookmaker on throwing matches. Cronje had subsequently admitted before a judicial probe in South Africa that he had thrown matches.Top

Aussies for quake relief tie?

SYDNEY, Jan 29 (IANS) — Australian cricket team may play in an exhibition cricket match to raise money for the survivors of the worst earthquake to hit India.

Steve Waugh, the captain of the national Australian cricket team, is believed to have given his tentative consent for this game that may be organised either in Australia or India, by expatriate Indians in Sydney and other parts of Australia who swung into action to collect donations for the victims of the earthquake, which hit Gujarat on Friday killing more than 20,000 people.

More than 2,000 strong expatriate Gujarati community in Sydney has also joined in the efforts to provide relief to the survivors of the earthquake. “We have issued appeals to the Australian community through television and print media to donate the maximum money into the “Gujarat Earthquake Relief Fund.” Our first priority is to collect maximum money at the earliest as it can be converted to suit the needs of the earthquake survivors,” Hari Gohil, President of the Gujarati Samaj of Australia, told IANS.

He also conveyed the concerns of the members of the Gujarati community in Australia as there is an apparent breakdown of communication lines to the affected parts of Gujarat. “It is really difficult to get through to relatives and friends in the worst hit areas and this is leading to frustration among the people who have relatives or friends there,” said Mr Gohil, adding “I had great difficulty in finding about the well-being of my relations in a village near Ahmedabad.”

The United Indian Associations (UIA) Inc, an umbrella body of different Indian organisations, is spearheading the move to collect the money in Sydney and they have already opened an account in a national bank in the name of “Gujarat Earthquake Relief Fund.”

“We are not treating this earthquake as a problem concerning only Gujaratis but as a national disaster and are working together with different associations to collect the maximum money and material,” S.P. Bhatia, President of the UIA and renowned Sydney plastic surgeon, told IANS on Monday.

“The moment we realised the dimension of the disaster, we decided to take some action to help the victims and now are appealing to all concerned Australians, irrespective of whether they are Indians or not, to come forward and donate the maximum to help the survivors of the earthquake,” said Mr Bhatia.

“As federal government has already announced a $1million donation for the relief work in the affected areas, we are thinking of approaching the state government to contribute some amount to “Gujarat Earthquake Relief Fund” or straight to relief organisations working in India,” he said.

The UIA has also convened an emergency meeting on Monday evening to coordinate fund collection and other relief work in a more efficient manner. Beside Indian organisations and individuals, other Australian community welfare bodies have also initiated efforts to send relief material and donations to the affected areas.

Warne caught abusing Carlisle

SYDNEY, Jan 29 (AFP) — Australia’s Nine Network had to apologise to its viewers today over the foul abuse dished out to an opposing batsman by Australian cricket’s naughty boy, Shane Warne, during a match here yesterday.

Fans watching Australia thrash Zimbabwe in a tri-series match at Sydney Cricket Ground clearly heard Warne utter a string of obscenities at Stuart Carlisle after the batsman had twice hit him for sixes.

The remark was picked up by a stump microphone and broadcast live and the station’s switchboard lit up as irate viewers called to protest.

Nine sport director Gary Burns said the incident was “unfortunate” and the network was sorry the comment had got to air.

However, Burns said the network would continue to use the stump microphones and would take no disciplinary action over the incident.

“It was definitely not our intention for that type of language to be broadcast,” Burns said in a statement.

Warne is on contract with Channel Nine and has done television commentary of international matches when not playing.

“We know Shane would never say that deliberately and that his comments were said in the heat of the battle,” said Burns.

“However, the players are well aware the stump microphones are there and it’s unfortunate that occasionally some swearing does get picked up.”

“It’s a problem faced by sports broadcasters the world over and not just confined to cricket.

“The stump microphones have been a part of Nine’s coverage for over 20 years...We plan to keep using them.”

Warne said later it was disappointing that his comments were broadcast.

“Obviously it’s disappointing that it eventually got into the loungerooms,” he told ABC radio.

“It was something I said out of frustration. He was batting well and hit me for a couple of sixes, so I was a bit disappointed.”

Australian coach John Buchananan said the incident was regretable but understandable given the pressure on players and the scrutiny on the field with cameras and microphones in every conceivable position.

But Carlisle said he had not even heard the comment, adding: “It might be disturbing for the public, but not for me personally. I think it’s part of the game.”

The incident follows a string of others involving Warne, including the accusation by a young English nurse last year that he had harassed her sexually on the telephone.

He has been warned over his perceived ungentlemanly and seemingly excessively aggressive behaviour towards other players on the field.

Warne was also accused of insulting teammate Scott Muller during a 1999 Test against Pakistan in Hobart, with a “can’t bowl, can’t throw” jibe which was broadcast live.Top

Disjointed Mahindras hold Tollygunge

KOLKATA, Jan 29 (UNI) — A disjointed Mahindra United Club of Mumbai today held the local outfit Maneksia Tollygunge Agragami to a goal-less draw in their third outing in the National Football League at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium.

Thus, star-studded Mahindra snatched second point after a drawn encounter against JCT earlier.

On the other hand Tollygunge Agragami earned their first point in three matches. They lost two of their earlier outings against their local rivals Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.

The Mumbai outfit fought neck and neck and the zeepmen proved their worth in blocking most of attacks. Mahindra’s defence including Nigerian Christopher and Habib Adekunce, foiled most of the rival attempts for scoring.

The local outfit under coach Amal Dutta could hardly produce any positive game and failed to encash the advantage of the home ground throughout the proceeding. Barring a few goal bound shots, the Agragami upfront could hardly pose any problem for Mahindra’ custodian Virendra Singh.

On the other hand Tollygunge goalkeeper Hemanta Dora was hardly tested except when Aquil Ansari hit a rightfooter grounder in the 30th minute off a Christopher pass.

Tollygunge comprising as many as three Nigerians and a Kenyan though looked stronger than their rivals and controlled the ball for most of the time returned with a single point when at least three other goal bound shots and header from medio Sasthi Duley missed the target.

Split not due to Sabrina: Becker

BERLIN, Jan 29 (Reuters) — Former Wimbledon champion Boris Becker has started a romance with a rap singer who was once voted Germany’s “most erotic woman”, German popular newspaper Bild reported today.

After divorcing his wife of seven years, Becker (33) was quoted in the paper as saying that he had not left his wife Barbara and their two children for artist Sabrina Setlur (27). He also denied media reports the singer was pregnant.

“I’m happy the game of hide-and-seek is over,” Becker was reported as telling a Bild reporter who had found the couple in a luxury hotel in New York.

“She is not pregnant. And we are not yet thinking about marriage. The truth is that we have met privately a few times since early December.”

Becker, three-times Wimbledon champion, announced he was leaving his wife in early December. But he denied media reports at the time Setlur was the reason for their split.

Becker at first said he would not divorce. But a financial and custody battle ensued.

The two were divorced on January 15 in Munich and the Beckers reached an out-of-court financial settlement reported to be worth $ 14 million that was finally sealed on Friday.

“My marriage to Babs was already broken before I met Sabrina,” Becker said. “We’re divorced. I’m 33. And I’m the kind of guy who needs a woman at his side...Sabrina and I are not planning to get married. I’ve had enough of that for now.”

Bild said Becker had taken a paternity test in London to clear up reports alleging he had fathered a daughter with a Russian woman.

“That is all being taken care of,” Becker said. “I am a serve-and-volley man. I decided a few weeks ago to clear up issues on every front. After that I hope that others will dominate the headlines for a while.

“There is an incredibly hysteria surrounding me at the moment. After (German) Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, there were more articles about me printed in the last year than anyone else. That’s insane.”

Bopanna ousts Vijay Kannan

KOLKATA, Jan 29 (UNI) — Unfancied Rohan Bopanna of Maharashtra caused a big flutter when he ousted second-seeded and last year’s finalist Vijay Kannan of Tamil Nadu 7/6, (7-4), 7-6, (7-1) in 90 minutes in the first round of the Indian Oil Servo Senior National Grass Court Tennis Championship at South Club here today.

Kannan and Bopanna started evenly and both retained their services till the match went into the tie-break. In the tie-break Bopanna with accurate services finally prevailed upon Kannan to move to the pre-quarterfinal.

In the last eight stage Bopanna would take on Shivang Mishra of Delhi who in another tie blasted C.D. Ajay of Delhi 6-4, 6-4.

Beside Bopanna, K. Shivshankar of Karnataka also forced an upset as he defeated eighth-seeded Vijendra Laad of Maharatsra also in straight set 7-6, (7-4), 6-3 which lasted for one hour 40 minutes.

In the Laad-Shivshankar match, the former broke Shivshankar in the fourh game to take a lead of 3-1, but the latter managed to get even in the seventh game by breaking lead. In the first set tie-break, after exchanging a serve break each, Shivshankar took four straight points to close the set with a 7-4 tie-break win.

The most dramatic game of the match was the third game of second set. In this game alone Shivshankar unleashed six aces only to lose the very next point. Laad kept his serve in the next game to lead 3-1. Shivshankar took the next five games straight to finally beat the eighth seed.

Wild card Kamala Kannan of Tamil Nadu justified the faith put in him by the organisers by entering the second round beating Kedar Tembe of Maharashtra 6-3, 6-3. Seventh-seed Mustafa Ghouse of Maharashtra beat local lad qualifier Abhishek Jagnani in 56 minutes 6-4, 6-0. Anand Radhakrishnan got past lucky loser Anant Sitaram of Andhra in three sets.Top

More tests for Rafter
SYDNEY: Pat Rafter will have blood tests in Melbourne on Thursday after specialists ruled out diet as the source of his ongoing cramping problems during matches. Rafter has seen several specialists in recent days but the cause of his problems, which all but ended his Australian Open campaign, remain a mystery. His brother and manager Steve said on Monday that Rafter was holidaying in Adelaide ahead of Australia’s Davis Cup tie against Ecuador in Perth from February 9 to 11. But he said Rafter would travel to Melbourne on Thursday for further tests before joining the Davis Cup team in Perth later in the week. “Nothing’s been done at this stage,” Steve Rafter said. “They’re happy with his diet. We’re not going to know a lot until after the tests.” Rafter was leading Andre Agassi two sets to one in the semifinals of the Australian Open in Melbourne when he began to cramp. The two-time US Open champion limped through the last two sets, losing in five to Agassi, who went on to win the final against Frenchman Arnaud Clement. Rafter also suffered cramps in Australia’s Davis Cup final against Spain in Barcelona in December. — AP

Agassi on top
MONACO: Andre Agassi leads the ATP Champions Race after winning the Australian Open final on Sunday against Arnaud Clement of France, who is second. Semifinalists in Melbourne, Sebastien Grosjean of France and Australian Pat Rafter, are third and fourth respectively. Agassi of the USA Has 200 points after his first tournament of the year and his seventh Grand Slam title. Clement, who has played three tournaments this season, has 146 points. Chile’s Marcelo Rios, top before the Australian Open, falls to ninth on 52 points after being knocked out in the first round of the Australian Open. — Reuters

Venues shifted
HYDERABAD: The devastating earthquake in Gujarat has forced the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to shift the venues of the forthcoming under-19 one-day matches against England from Gujarat to Andhra Pradesh. A shocked BCCI seceretary J.Y. Lele told ‘UNI’ from Baroda which was also under the quake zone, that the first and the third one-day match would be played in Hyderabad on February 2 and 6 while the second one-day game would be held at Vijayawada on February 4. The three one-day internationals were scheduled to be held at Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Baroda. About the three-day match between Board President XI and Australia scheduled to be played in Baroda in the last week of February, Mr Lele said holding the match at Baroda was ruled out and it was likely to be held at Hyderabad. — UNI
