Sampras struggles into fourth round MELBOURNE, Jan 19 (Reuters) — Pete Sampras chided himself for playing careless tennis but still scraped through to the fourth round of the Australian Open today after a tough five-set victory over Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela. The holder of a record 13 Grand Slam titles says the important thing in a major is to make it to the second week and he only just managed to follow his own advice. “There’s definitely room for improvement, I can’t play careless tennis,” said Sampras after his marathon three-hour 6-4, 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win. Defending women’s champion and No 2 seed Lindsay Davenport had dropped a set in her first two matches but was back to her formidable best as she crushed unseeded Italian Silvia Farina Elia 6-2, 6-1. Eighth seed Anna Kournikova seemed to be heading for the exit before displaying her fighting spirit by battling back from a set down to beat her Austrian doubles partner Barbara Schett 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. While Kournikova clawed her way back against Schett, her compatriot Marat Safin secured his best result in three Melbourne appearances when he outfought Michal Tabara of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-1, 6-4.
Twelfth-seeded Australian Pat Rafter also won easily, downing Swiss Michel Kratochvil 6-4, 6-1, 7-5. Frenchman Cedric Pioline was the first seeded victim of the fifth day. The former Wimbledon and US Open runner-up, seeded 13, was beaten 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 by greying American veteran Todd Martin, a runner-up in Melbourne in 1994. Pioline was soon followed by compatriot Sandrine Testud, the women’s 14th seed becoming the latest victim of rising Belgian teenager Justine Henin. Henin won two warm-up events before the Australian Open and stretched her winning streak in Australia to 13 consecutive matches with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Testud. World No 3 Sampras has now had three tough matches in Melbourne, being taken to four sets by Karol Kucera of Slovakia and then Czech Bohdan Ulihrach in the first two rounds. The American drew on all his experience to claw his way back against Chela in scorching heat on centre court. A sluggish Sampras held a service break in the second set before allowing Chela back into the match. The winner in Melbourne in 1994 and 1997, Sampras broke Chela in the 12th game of the fourth set to force the match into a deciding fifth. He then broke once more to clinch victory. “I’ve been down and out before. You’ve just got to hang in there,” said Sampras, who meets Martin in the fourth round. Sampras does not have much more time to fine-tune his game in a talent-packed top half of the draw, with defending champion Andre Agassi looming in the quarterfinals. Agassi’s German opponent David Prinosil quit their third round match with heat exhaustion as Melbourne sweltered in temperatures of 34 degrees Celsius. Sixth-seeded Agassi was leading 7-6, 5-0 when Prinosil said he could not go on. Agassi warned that Sampras should never be underestimated, as he showed last year when he won his seventh Wimbledon title despite struggling against tendinitis from the early rounds. “I’ve seen him win Slams injured,” Agassi said. “All a guy like that needs is a window of opportunity to have a relatively smooth match... and all of a sudden find his game in a way that puts him in a great position for the tournament.” Davenport dominated throughout her third round match against Farina Elia. The Californian led 4-0 in both sets before the 50th ranked Italian managed to get on the scoreboard. “I am a lot happier with the way I played,” a relieved Davenport said. “Today I really felt I was timing the ball a lot better... hitting it out front and I had a lot more power and a lot more depth and all that kind of good stuff that I have been lacking the last couple of matches,” she said. Davenport will meet 15th seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium in the round of 16. Clijsters, who stretched Davenport to three sets in the second round of the US Open last year, scored an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Spanish Grand Slam debutante Nuria Llagostera. Kournikova next plays another Austrian Barbara Rittner — a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 winner over Ruxandra Dragomir of Romania — with Davenport ahead in the quarterfinals. Fourth seed Monica Seles insisted today that her career still had a long way to run even though her bid for a fifth Australian Open title was not going smoothly. Seles set up a last-16 meeting with the in-form Justine Henin by defeating France’s Emilie Loit 6-3, 7-5. But the nine-time Grand Slam winner was not impressed with her own performance and admitted she would have to raise her standard of play “if I want to stay in the tournament”. Bhupathi-Sugiyama duo wins MELBOURNE, Jan 19 (Reuters) — India’s Mahesh Bhupathi, pairing with Ai Sugiyama of Japan, entered the second round of the mixed doubles in the Australian Open Tennis Tournament, beating David Riki (Czech Republic) and Karina Habsudova (Slovakia) in straight sets in a first round match at Melbourne Park today. After Bhupathi and Sugiyama won the first set 7-5, the pair of Riki and Habsudova took the second set to the tie-breaker. However, Bhupathi and his partner managed to win the tie breaker 11-9, thus clinching the set and match 7-5, 7-6. |
India overwhelm Sri Lanka LUDHIANA, Jan 19 — Hosts India made mincemeat of Sri Lanka, routing the visitors 12-0 to make a flying start in the third Asian School Hockey Championship at the Punjab Agricultural University grounds here today. In another one-sided encounter, Malaysia outplayed lowly Iran 6-0 while Uzbekistan and Singapore played a 1-1 draw after a goalless first half. India, who won the inaugural edition of the championship at Chandigarh in 1994, virtually toyed with the islanders, scoring at will at regular intervals. Such was India’s grip on the proceedings that the ball hardly crossed into their territory. On the few occasions that the Sri Lankans managed to move in, the Indian defence thwarted their designs without much difficulty. India gave the visitors a taste of their firepower early on when Satwinder Singh sounded the boards after hoodwinking a couple of rival defenders. Sri Lanka tried to hit back but Navodana Dissanayake’s foul prompted umpire Rajinder Gandhi to show him the green card. The second goal for India came off Bharat’s stick after he intercepted a cross inside the ‘D’ before unleashing a power-packed hit in the 14th minute. Two minutes later, skipper Raju made it 3-0 after a passing bout with team-mate Sudhir Kumar. Thereafter, it was Sudhir’s turn and he shot into the roof of the net from a difficult angle. Two more goals were added before half-time. First full-back Jitender Saroha found the target with a direct hit off a penalty corner and then Vipul Halwan scored in similar fashion making it 6-0. After the breather, it was the same story as Sri Lanka remained at the receiving end. Jitender Saroha scored the seventh goal with a direct hit off a penalty corner followed by Yoginder Gulia’s brilliant attempt from the ‘D’ top (8-0). Rajnikant’s brace in the 53rd and 63rd minutes saw the score swelling to 10-0. In the dying minutes, Satwinder and Rajnikant were again on target, scoring one goal each to complete the rout. Malaysia also had an easy outing against Iran, prevailing over the minnows by six goals without reply. In fact hockey is something new for the Iranians who are more at ease on the football ground. As the Iranian coach revealed, the country does not have a single Astroturf for hockey and before coming for this tournament, they mostly practised indoors. The coach also revealed that their senior team had also lost to Malaysia by a record margin of 22-0 recently. Malaysia took the lead nine minutes from the start when Prabakaran deflected a push by Suffian Mahammad. Off the ninth penalty corner which Malaysia earned, Azlan Misron found the target off a rebound making it 2-0 before half time. After the breather, a quick pass by Ikhmal Abd. Jabar was utilised by Ismail Abu who shot home after the goalkeeper was completely beaten. Ismail Abu added another goal in the 44th minute when he made full use of a loose ball and found the target with a neat placement. Thereafter, Ikhmal Abd. Jabar lunged forward to put the ball in the goalmouth with the goalkeeper looking on helplessly. In the dying minutes, Suffian Mahammad put the last nail in the coffin through a deflection off a short corner. Iran did try to come back into the match through Amir Chahardoli, who managed to cut through but found himself bottled up in rival territory. An attempt by Mehdi Zolfagharian also failed a few minutes earlier. Singapore and Uzbekistan shared the honours with a 1-1 draw although Singapore managed to take the lead through Mohammed Zilkarnain’s brilliant scoop off a penalty corner in the 54th minute. The equaliser came five minutes before close when a shot by Qalandavov Golib was neatly deflected by Gaibov Zafar, providing some relief to the Uzbekistan camp. Saturday’s fixtures: Singapore v Malaysia — 10 a.m.; Sri Lanka v Bangladesh — 12 noon. |
Donald returns for third Test JOHANNESBURG, Jan 19 (Reuters) — South Africa’s leading wicket-taker Allan Donald returns for the third Test against Sri Lanka at Centurion tomorrow but admits that his preparation has not been ideal after recovering from a stomach strain. Donald, who has missed three Tests, replaces young pace sensation Mfuneko Ngam who has a stress fracture of the leg. Donald’s only recent action has come in the fifth and six one-day internationals against Sri Lanka earlier this week. He likened his current situation to the first Test against England at the Wanderers in 1999, where he returned from injury and was “not in great shape”. The Centurion pitch is likely to be similar to the playing surface in Cape Town and the bouncy conditions should be in the 34-year-old paceman’s favour. South Africa won the first Test in just three days and Sri Lanka seem to have little chance of squaring the series. But the tourists’ Australian coach Dav Whatmore won’t accept a defeatist attitude from his players. “If you go into a game thinking you’re going to lose, you might as well not go out there. I just won’t tolerate that,” he said. Whatmore said more of his players were starting to stand up and be counted and he hoped to see that approach spread in the final match of a tour that has so far produced just one win in eight matches, two Tests and six one-day internationals. Perhaps significantly, the one victory on Wednesday night in the final one-day match prevented a South African rout. South Africa have Boeta Dippenaar in the side for injured opening batsman Gary Kirsten, while Eastern Province all-rounder Justin Kemp makes his Test debut in place of Lance Klusener who is out for up to six weeks with a knee cartilage injury. He said there was a real desire to make up for Wednesday’s defeat, which cost South Africa the chance of equalling West Indies’ world record of 11 consecutive wins in the shortened form of the game, with a victory at Centurion. The tourists may have a problem in the bowling department with Chaminda Vaas doubtful after injuring his groin during the one-day victory at the Wanderers on Wednesday. Worryingly for the tourists, ace off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan also has a groin strain after stumbling during his last over on Wednesday. Teams: South Africa: Boeta Dippenaar, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Daryll Cullinan, Neil Mckenzie, Mark Boucher, Nicky Boje, Justin Kemp, Shaun Pollock (capt), Allan Donald, Makhaya Ntini. Sri Lanka: Sanath Jayasuriya (capt), Marvan Atapattu, Russel Arnold, Aravinda De Silva, Kumar Sangakkara, Avishka Gunawardene, Tillekeratne Dilshan, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Chaminda Vaas, Nuwan Zoysa, Dilhara Fernando, Muttiah Muralitharan, Pramodya Wickramasinghe, Kaushalya Weeraratne, Muthumudalige Pushpakumara. |
Dubai hockey DUBAI, Jan 19 (UNI) — The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) says it will have to wait for the government’s clearance for the team’s participation in a hockey tournament, also featuring Pakistan, to be held in Dubai in April-May this year. “We are awaiting clearance from the government as it is a must for participating in any tournament abroad”,
IHF Secretary K Jyothikumaran told Gulf News. He said the ihf officials had held talks with their Pakistani counterparts during the Asian Hockey Federation meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday and both sides agreed in principle to participate in the hockey tournament in Dubai. “IHF president k p s gill and I met Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) secretary Brig Musarratullah Khan and had elaborate talks about the (hockey) series. We will be playing in Dubai during the last week of April or the first week of May “, Mr Jyothikumaran said. It is to be seen whether the Indian Government will permit the hockey team to play Pakistan keeping in view the fact that the cricket team was denied permission to tour the neighbouring country for a Test and one-day international series last month. India says there is no point in having sporting links with Pakistan as long as it continues to foment trouble on Indian soil. The Dubai tournament would be organised by the
UAE hockey Association with the support of the Cricketers Benefit Fund Series
(CBFS), the organiser of cricket tournaments in Sharjah. The proposal to organise such a series was mooted by the Calcutta-based Leisure Sports Management Group. Mr Jyothikumaran said” “According to information from the organisers, the tournament will be a quadrangular contest. Apart from India and Pakistan, it is understood that the organisers have also had talks with Malaysia and Bangladesh. We also heard that they are planning to rope in a country from outside Asia too. Hopefully, within a short while we might know who the opposition will be”. The ihf was yet to hear from
UAE hockey officials the full details about the hockey championship. “We have been given to understand that the
UAE officials are busy trying to replace the ground surface in order to stage the event. They are also working on fixing the floodlit facilities at the venue”, Mr Jyothikumaran added. Meanwhile, Kr Reza Abdi, the Coordinator of the
UAE hockey Committee, confirmed that work would soon commence on making the ground ready for the hockey championship. Mr Gill, the ihf chief, had also confirmed on Wednesday on his return from Kuala Lumpur that the Indian team would play Pakistan in in the Hockey championship at Dubai. |
Harikrishna
wins, shoots into lead WIJK ANN ZEE (Netherlands), Jan 19 (PTI) — Grandmaster norm holder
I.M. Pendyala Harikrishna of India joined the lead position on 2.5 points after the third round of the Corus Grandmaster group ‘B’ tournament being held simultaneously with the main event here. Playing white against
I.M. Erik Hoeksema of the Netherlands, Harikrishna displayed class to emerge victorious from a simple middlegame that arose from a side variation of the queen’s Indian defence. In the middlegame, Hoeksema erred by opting for passive manoeuvres and allowed Harikrishna to obtain a passed pawn on the kingside. Harikrishna sacrificed an exchange and got two pawns in return to romp home easily. Important results of round 3: P. Harikrishana (2.5) E. Hoeksema (0), F. Nijboer (2.5) drew B. Gulko (2.5), V. Yge (2) B. Manuel (1.5), T. Luther (1.5) Vink Nico (0), Dennis De Vreugt (1), drew Karel Van Der Weide (1.5), R. Teimour (1) lost to M. Gurevich (2). |
Fazal keeps Indian challenge alive KOLKATA, Jan 19 (UNI) — Jaroslav Levinsky of the Czech Republic moved into the singles final of the ITF Futures tennis meet coming from behind to defeat a fighting Prahlad Srinath in the semifinals 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) after an epic battle of over two and a half hours at the South Club here today. Srinath starting promisingly and went up 3-0 breaking Levinsky’s service in the first and third game. But then on Levinsky stepped up the gas narrowing down the gap breaking Srinath in the fourth game. But thereafter Srinath held his services to win the first set 6-4. In the second set both held on to their serves till the sixth game after which Levinsky broke the Indian in the eighth game to take a lead 5-3. He then held on to his own serve to win the second set 6-3 to level the set 1-1. In the decider both the players fought tooth and nail holding on to their serves till the score reached 6-6. In the tie-breaker Levinsky kept his cool and served well to take 7-5 lead to win the third set and match. Though the Indian challenge in the singles ended with Srinath’s exit Syed Fazaluddin kept the Indian flag high as he partnering Dimitri Tomashevich of Uzbekistan and reached the finals of the doubles drubbing the Uzbek duo of Antaon Kokurin and Abdul Hamid 6-1, and 6-4. Fazal and Tomashevich gelled well to dismiss the Uzbek pair in straight sets. While Dimitri sent down big serves Fazal hit winners in his down the line returns and passing shots to catch the Uzbek pair napping. After losing the first set 1-6 the Uzbeks started on a promising note holding their serve and coming very close to breaking the Indo-Uzbek duo once, but the latter kept their nerve and sealed a date in the finals against the Levinsky-Navratil pair. In the singles final to be held tomorrow Levinsky would meet the winners of the other semifinal, Martin Spottl (Austria), who beat Juraj Hasko of Slovakia 6-2, 6-1. |
Chile, Yugoslavia start favourites KOLKATA, Jan 19 (PTI) — Title aspirants Chile, struggling to find their peak form, have their task cut out when they clash with Iceland in the quarterfinals of the Sahara Millinnium Cup football tournament at the Salt Lake Stadium here tomorrow. The Chileans, despite emerging champions in group-4 with an all-win record, have not been able to play to their full potential so far but coach Nelson Acosta Lopez was confident that his boys would strike form when it matters most. Despite failing to live upto their reputation, the Latin American team showed the knack of scoring the goals when the opportunities came their way as they recorded victories against group opponents Japan, Bahrain and Uzbekistan. The Chileans scored a solitary goal against the spirited Japanese in their lung-opener and then demolished lowly Bahrain 2-0 in their second match. They completed their league engagements again with a 2-0 victory against Uzbekistan to top the group table. Iceland, who finished runners-up in group-2, have brought a rather young team for the 13-nation tournament and were keen to make an impact against the stronger opponents. The Icelanders lost to strong contenders Uruguay 1-2 in their opening match and then thrashed hosts India 3-0 to secure a berth in the last eight stage. The Chileans will be heavily relying on their star striker Hector Tapia and supporting striker Fernando Martel to deliver the goods upfront. The duo have not been able to make much of an impression though Tapia, who has scored two goals in the tournament so far, has shown flashes of brilliance but has lacked the consistency. Iceland defenders were sure to mark Tapia well on the morrow and it remains to be seen whether the striker could be effective. The Latin American team boasts of two world cuppers in goalkeeper Marcelo Ramirez and defender Moises Villarroel and a number of Olympians but they have to tone up the game to progress into the last four stage. The Chilean defence has looked a trifle vulnerable under pressure and showed signs of cracking in the last match against Uzbekistan. It was another matter that the Uzbeks could not capitalise on the opportunities. World cupper Moises Villarroel will have to play an important role in the defence while the other defenders Cristian Alvarez, David Henrique, Alex Von Schwedler will have to tighten up. Iceland will depend on their striker Tryggvi Gudmundsson to score the goals for the team while forwards Gudmundur Benediktsson and Kjrtan Antonsson were expected to play a supporting role in the frontline. MARGAO: A volatile contest is on the cards when ninth ranked Yugoslavia take on neighbour and 13th ranked Romania in the third quaterfinals on Saturday. Yugoslavia, who topped group-1, drew their first match against Bosnia 1-1 and later subdued lowly Bangladesh 4-1, looks to be in good form and start as favourites. Romania, who put up a mediocre performance against Jordan to whom they lost 0-1, quickly settled down to the climatic condition to outwit Hong Kong 4-2 to finish runner-up behind Jordan in group-3. Both teams from Europe have the same style of play. Yugoslav team consists of players mostly from the first division club while Romanian players are from the second division clubs. However, Romania have played both their matches here and have rested for six days. They will be fresh and should give a tough fight to Yugoslavia. Romania have been impressive with quick-short passes and possession play. Their main strength is their midfield where medio Sanmantean Lucian has played a pivotal role to fashion most of their moves. He is well supported by Luca Loan and captain Zlati Aurelian. Strikers Zahriue Liviu and Sasu Marius will have to play their best and convert the half chances that come their way if Romania are to win tomorrow. |
SGFI plans mega event in
2002 LUDHIANA, Jan 19 — With the holding of the National School Games, the School Games Federation in India will complete its 50 years and in November 2002, it will celebrate its golden jubilee. This was disclosed by Mr C.L. Negi, President, SGFI, while talking at Ludhiana last evening during the inauguration of the Asian school hockey meet. Mr Negi who has been involved with the SGFI for many decades told that it was in 1952 that the first National School Games were held in Panchmari (MP). The 2002 mega event will have 27 disciplines, which will be divided in two segments, one part will be held in Madhya Pradesh and other part in Gujarat. Both the governments, specially the Chief Ministers have evinced a keen interest to hold this mega event in which at least 10,000 participants were expected in each state. He said international players and officials will be honoured. Mr Negi, a member of the Asian School Sport Federation, said China would host the Asian schools badminton meet and Sri Lanka would have the Asian schools football meet in August this year. He further told that Gujarat had also shown an interest to host the Asian schools table tennis tournament this year and he would discuss it in the forthcoming meeting of the ASSF. He complimented the efforts of the Punjab Education Department, particularly the Education Minister, Mr Tota Singh, for taking an interest in the Asian school hockey meet, where seven countries were taking part. He said the under-14 and under-17 National School Games were still to be allotted to any state and he was of the opinion that Punjab should come forward in organising the meets. When asked about the fewer competitions in World School Games, thus providing little exposure to sportpersons, Mr Negi said India, for the first time had taken part in the gymnastics event in 1998 held at Shanghai (China), where events for three disciplines athletics, swimming and gymnastics were conducted. He said the International School Federation, with headquarters at Belgium, will host the world school volleyball meet this year. He said in the world school meet, the only hindrance was that only one school team could be sent. Mr P.S. Chhabra, secretary-general, SGFI, said it was a gigantic task to organise 27 sport disciplines in three age groups in boys and girls section in a span of six months during a year. |
