Capriati, Hingis power into final

MELBROUNE, Jan 25 (Reuters) — Martina Hingis will take on Jennifer Capriati in the Australian Open final after she crushed Venus Williams 6-1, 6-1 today to reach a personal milestone by beating both Williams sisters.

Jennifer Capriati celebrates her semifinal win over compatriot Lindsay Davenport at the Australian Open on Thursday. Capriati, the 12th seed, won 6-3, 6-4. — Reuters photo

Capriati also made her own little piece of history when the 12th seed upset defending champion Lindsay Davenport 6-3 6-4 to reach the final of a Grand Slam event for the first time.

The ease of Hingis’s win over Venus was in stark contrast to her three-set epic against Serena Williams yesterday, when Serena served for the match before Hingis scrambled back in a gutsy performance.

Hingis had three times beaten one Williams only to lose to the other in the same tournament, most recently when Serena beat her in the 1999 US Open final after the swiss downed Venus in the semifinals.

“I felt like this time that it was definitely my chance because I felt like I’m in very good shape and I felt like I had it in me,’’ Hingis said of her Williams sister double triumph.

Only two players had achieved the feat before — Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in Sydney in 1998 and Steffi Graf at the same tournament the following year.

Top seed Hingis might never have another match so easy against a Williams. An erratic Venus effectively gifted her the contest, hitting 38 unforced errors, including 22 in the first set — two thirds of all the points Hingis won.

“I just had an off day,’’ third seed Venus said.

Capriati (24) threw her arms in the air and cried when Davenport netted a forehand on her second match point to close out the first semifinal in 76 minutes on a hot and humid Melbourne Park centre court.

“I really wanted it... It has taken me a long time to get to the final of a grand slam,’’ said Capriati, the former teen prodigy whose career stalled in the mid-1990s after a much publicised rebellion against authority and run-ins with police.

Capriati, the 1992 Olympic gold medallist, was playing in her fifth Grand Slam semifinal and scored a surprisingly easy victory against a listless and error-prone Davenport, who beat her at the same stage in Melbourne last year.

Capriati broke second seed Davenport in the second game of the first set and quickly built a 3-0 lead.

A sluggish Davenport won only one point in the opening two games and appeared to have few answers to her US compatriot’s heavy groundstrokes.

Capriati broke davenport again in the opening game of the second set before surrendering her serve for the first and only time in the next game.

Davenport set up another service break opportunity for the tenacious Capriati with a double fault and a forehand error in the fifth game of the second set.

Defending champion Andre Agassi beat a crippled Pat Rafter 7-5, 2-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 today to reach the Australian Open final for the third time.

Agassi sealed victory in just over three hours after the Australian’s legs cramped up so badly that he could hardly run.

Rafter had led by two sets to one when his legs started to seize up, but won just four more games as a fresher Agassi strolled to victory.

Rafter, who was bidding to become the first local player since Pat Cash in 1998 to make the men’s singles final, needed treatment after the fourth set but bravely played on even though he was in obvious discomfort.

Swift revenge for Williams’

MELBOURNE, Jan 25 (Reuters) — Venus and Serena Williams earned Swift revenge over Martina Hingis today, teaming up to beat their Swiss rival and her partner Monica Seles and reach the final of the Australian Open women’s doubles.

The American sisters beat Hingis and Seles 7-5, 6-2 in their semifinal showdown after Hingis had knocked them both out of the singles to join Jennifer Capriati in Saturday’s final.

Hingis followed her victory over Serena in yesterday’s quarterfinals by scalping Venus earlier today in their semifinal.

But the sisters’ revenge in the doubles prevented Hingis from reaching her fifth straight final with five different partners.

The Williams will play Lindsay Davenport and Corina Morariu in tomorrow’s final after the American pair beat second-seeded Australian Nicole Arendt and Ai Sugiyama of Japan 7-5, 6-2.

Cerovic upsets Dmitri Mazur

BANGALORE, Jan 25 (PTI) —Ivan Cerovic of Croatia ousted eighth seed Dmitri Mazur (Uzbekistan) 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 and entered the singles semifinal of the ITF Futures Tennis Championship here today.

The Croat won the first set easily but lost the second, after encountering stiff resistance from Mazur.

The final set witnessed an absorbing battle between Cerovic and Mazur with each winning three games. Cerovic, however, returned to form and managed to win to set up a semifinal encounter with sixth seed Juran Hasko (SVK).

Hasko fought back after being down by a set, to defeat James Auckland (GBR) 4-6, 7-6, (7-3), 6-3, in another quarterfinal.

Second-seeded Martin Spottl of Austria, after some anxious moments, managed to quell Kokurin Anton (uzb) 6-3, 7-6, (9-7).

In the semifinal, Spottl will meet fourth seed Rik De Voest (RSA) who trounced Hendri-Susilo Pramono (Indonesia) 6-2, 6-2.

Chanda goes down fighting to Fominyh

UBEDA (Spain), Jan 25 (UNI) — International master Sandipan Chanda went down gallantly to grandmaster Alexander Fominyh of Russia in fourth round of the ‘Ciudad-de-Ubeda’ International Open Chess Tournament here.

Playing Fominyh for the fourth time in the past one year, Chanda had the advantage of the white pieces. Responding to black’s Taimanov system of the Sicilian defence, he played energetically and sacrificed an exchange for the dark squared bishop on his 18th move. With his king dragged into the open, the grandmaster decided to give up a rook for a pawn in order to draw the game through perpetual checks. However, Sandipan declined the offer and continued to play for a win in a complicated position. Facing good resistance from black, he sadly blundered another pawn to hand over the advantage to black and lost after 59 moves.

In another fighting effort, Sriram Jha held grandmaster Vera to a draw in a marathon battle lasting 70 moves.

Coming across the Slav defence in response to his queen pawn opening, Jha chose the exchange variation. After equalising the game soon after the opening, the grandmaster slowly increased his advantage by the time the game reached a knight ending.

Yugoslavia lift Sahara Cup

KOLKATA, Jan 25 (UNI) — European soccer giants Yugoslavia, displaying overall superiority, won the Sahara Cup Millennium Soccer Tournament, outplaying their Balkan rival Bosnia 2-0 in the final at Salt Lake Stadium here today.

After medio Dulaji Igor put Yugoslavia in the lead as early as in the seventh minute, cashing in on a pass from striker Igor Bogdanovic following a goal-mouth melee, Bogdanovic himself struck next to seal the fate of Bosnia in the 45th minute.

Besides the handsome Sahara Cup, Yugoslavia got a purse of $ 1,50,000, which was the winners’ stake, while Bosnia, who played their first ever final in an international meet, had to be contended with $ 75,000.

After putting up a lucklustre display in their semifinal match against Japan, Yugoslavia today put up a vastly improved display and never lost the control of the game except for a brief period midway through the second half when the Bosnian forwards made a couple of abortive raids.

Such was Yugoslavia’s dominance today that they did not allow their younger neighbours to make a single goal-bound move in the first half. The absence of their skipper Sasa Ilic and their dependable back Cirkivik Milivoje, who had to sit out for being shown two yellow cards and for injury, respectively, did not make a difference for the Yugoslavs, who are ranked ninth in the world.

Yugoslavian coach Ilija Petrovic rightly predicted yesterday that it would be a different game altogether in the final.

For Yugoslavia, linkmen Igor Dulaji and Trobak Goran moved in tandem to dominate the midfield and fed their forwards with nice passes. While upfront striker Vladimir Ivic and Igor Bogdanovic pierced the Bosnian defence time and again, displaying fine skill and understanding.

In their deep defence also, Rasovik Vuk, Ilic Ivan, Petrovic Dusan and Tanasijevik Jovan never gave any leeway to the Bosnian forwards.

On the other hand, Bosnia, who were expected to fight evenly specially after their scintilliating performance against the two Latin American soccer powers Uruguay and Chile in the quarterfinals and semifinals respectively, failed to live up to the expectation. Though they made several raids in the second half, all of which proved abortive.

The absence of two of their regulars striker Mirsad Besliz and defender Mirzet Krupinac, who could not play today for being shown two successive yellow cards, proved quite damaging for Bosnia.

India win Asian School Hockey Championship
From Amardeep Bhattal
Tribune News Service

LUDHIANA, Jan 25 — Hosts India justified their top billing, trouncing Bangladesh 3-0 in an action-packed final of the third Asian School Hockey Championship which concluded on a colourful note at the Punjab Agricultural University Astro-turf stadium here this afternoon.

In a repeat of the 1994 final, India emerged triumphant scoring thrice in the second session after a series of close calls early on. Bangladesh, practically the same outfit who played in the under-16 tournament at Singapore, too had some excellent chances but fine goal-keeping by MG Suresh and a stout defence thwarted their designs. Incidentally, Bangladesh had lost to India in the 1994 final at Chandigarh by a 7-0 margin.

A jam-packed stadium today witnessed exciting hockey with action shifting from one end to another in rapid succession. Although the first half remained goal-less, there was never a dull moment in the 70-minute encounter. Indian coach Rajinder Singh later admitted that it was a tough match. “They were more experienced and had more international exposure as compared to our team. However, my boys combined well although we missed many penalty corners,” he said while singling out skipper Raju, goalkeeper Suresh, Bharat and Satwinder for special praise. The Bangladesh coach also praised the standard of the game saying that his team could have played better.

Ravinder Kumar and Raju gave India a fine start with Raju successfully cutting through a host of defenders before giving a quick pass to Satwinder, who only managed to shoot wide.

Bangladesh hit back through Mohammed Ashraful Islam who combined well with Mohammed Mazharul Islam to put Maksud Alam in possession. Alam’s subsequent hit gave India the jitters as the ball sailed over, skimming the bar.

India’s attack spearheaded by Satwinder, Bharat, Ravinder and Raju stretched the Bangladesh defence to the limits. A pass by Bharat to Satwinder went waste as the latter failed to connect properly. Again Satwinder managed to cut through but before he could attempt a hit, he lost balance. A penalty corner hit by Vipul Halwan was palmed away by Mohammed Zahid Hossain under the Bangladesh bar.Again, a minute before half-time a move by Raju and Satwinder was followed by Sudhir Kumar’s unsuccessful attempt when he flung himself on the ground but failed to connect.

After the breather, India were again on the attack, and Raju’s fine attempt from the left saw the ball hitting the upright. It was in the 41st minute that the hosts took the lead off a penalty corner. Vipul Halwan’s push saw Bangladesh custodian Zahid Hossain making a vain bid to kick the ball away but the ball landed in the goalmouth after striking his pads (1-0).

Midway through the second half, skipper Raju raced down the left flank and despatched a cross parallel to the goal-line. However, Bharat who was slightly behind, failed to connect.

With a few minutes to go for the long hooter, Ravinder Kumar and Raju moved in tandem to set up a move for Satwinder. Satwinder simply raced into the goalmouth with the ball to make it 2-0.

The third goal came after the hooter was sounded when umpire Balwinder Singh, Olympian, blew for a penalty stroke following a stick-check by Bangladesh custodian Zahid Hossain. Skipper Raju cooly placed the ball in the net, sparking celebrations in the stands.

The Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes. While the winners received an award of Rs 1 lakh, the runners-up were given Rs 50,000. Malaysia, who were declared third, received Rs 25,000. Among those present on the occasion were the Punjab Education Minister, Mr Tota Singh, the Secretary, Education, Mr R.S. Sandhu, Joint Secretary, Mr Satwant Singh Johal, Secretary-general of the SGFI, Mr P.S. Chabra and former Olympian Pargat Singh.

Nagamootoo helps Windies win

ADELAIDE, Jan 25 (Reuters) — Leg-break bowler Mahendra Nagamootoo took a career-best four for 32 off 7.2 overs to help the West Indies to a morale-boosting 77-run win over Zimbabwe in their limited over match today.

Zimbabwe, who needed 253 to win, were all out of 175 in 40.2 overs.

It was the only second victory from six matches for the West Indies in the triangular series, in which Australia are undefeated in four. Zimbabwe have one victory from four appearances.

Man-of-the-match Marlon Samuels (19) made 68 for the West Indies in their total of 235 for six in 47 overs batting first before their innings was cut short by three overs because of rain.

Under the Duckworth/Lewis system, Zimbabwe were given a revised target of 253 to win in 47 overs.

Andy Flower (50) and Grant Flower (41) shared a fourth-wicket stand of 90 before both were out within the space of 12 runs.

Nagamootoo took the vital wicket of Andy Flower with a diving one-headed catch off his own bowling.

Earlier, Brian Lara made 70 off 96 balls (three fours, one six), adding 133 for the third wicket with Samuels (six fours, one six, 98 balls).

Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak gave another spirited performance, taking three for 27.

But when the all-rounder was leg before wicket to Nagamootoo for three in Zimbabwe’s 36th over, it was part of a massive late-order collapse.

Zimbabwe lost their last seven wickets for 38, starting with the two Flowers at 137 for four and 149 for five.

Waugh ready to talk to investigators

MELBOURNE, Jan 25 (AFP) — Embattled Australian batsman Mark Waugh, today agreed to face questioning over his alleged role in cricket’s match-fixing and betting scandal, and conceded that he was under pressure.

Waugh’s manager Leo Karis said a letter was faxed to Australian Cricket Board chief executive Malcolm Speed early in the morning confirming Waugh had reconsidered his earlier refusal to be interviewed by investigators of the ICC and the ACB.

“It hasn’t been the best week, I guess, obviously there’s some pressure there,” Waugh told reporters in Adelaide.

But Australian team members continued to support him, he said. “It’s obviously been spoken about. My team-mates are very supportive, which I’d expect of them. They’re going about their business as normal and so am I.”

Waugh is in Adelaide preparing with the Australian side to play the West Indies in a limited overs match tomorrow.

“Tomorrow will be a good test. I hit the ball pretty well in the nets so, fingers crossed, I’ll make a few runs,” the twin brother of Australian captain Steve Waugh said. However, he refused to offer any insight into his likely testimony to the International Cricket Council investigators.

ACB boss Malcolm Speed welcomed Waugh’s decision to give evidence to the ICC probe.

“I’m happy the undertaking has been received,” Mr Speed said.

“Mark’s form is excellent and in the long term, generally we have a good relationship with Mark.”

However, he hinted Waugh would face a gruelling interrogation.

WELLINGTON (Reuters): Former New Zealand cricket captain Martin Crowe has reconfirmed his cooperation with the International Cricket Council (ICC) in its inquiry into match-fixing allegations, his lawyer David Howman said on Thursday.

“As previously stated, he has expressly agreed to cooperate at all times with the New Zealand inquiry, headed by Sir Ian Barker, and consequently with any request to partake in the investigation undertaken by the ICC anti-corruption unit, headed by Sir Paul Condon,” Mr Howman said in a statement.

‘ACB disrespectful towards Mark’

MELBOURNE, Jan 25 (Reuters) — The Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) said today the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) had been “disrespectful” in its attempts to convince Mark Waugh to co-operate with a global probe into corruption in cricket.

Waugh (35), one of Australia’s finest and most elegant batsman of the modern era, received a strongly-worded letter from the ACB yesterday.

It informed him that if he did not agree by four o’clock on Thursday afternoon to take part next month in an investigation by the ACB and the International Cricket Council (ICC), his selection in the Australian team would be “automatically withdrawn”.

“Mark Waugh found out about the interview request one minute before a bloke put a camera in his face,” ACA chief executive and former Australian off-spinner Tim May told reporters in Melbourne today.

Jitender Singh wins against Murali
By Gopal Sharma
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Jan 25 — In an exciting bout on a day which was otherwise marked by sluggish quarterfinal contests Jitender Singh of Delhi triumphed over P. Murali Kishore of Andhra Pradesh on the third day of the All-India Invitation A.K. Misra Memorial Boxing Championship at the Sector 10 Skating Rink here today.

In the light middle weight category contest Jitender hit back with a couple of forceful blows in the second round after conceding some ground to Murali in the first round. In the next round the Delhi boxer softened up his rival by landing crushing punches and went on to win the contest.

Shailender Singh of Uttar Pradesh knocked out G. Mohan of Tamil Nadu as a crushing punch sent Mohan reeling to the ground when the bout had barely started.

In an interesting contest in bantam weight section K H S Kingson Singh, a sub-junior national gold medallist hailing from Manipur but playing for Border Security Force, won a favourable verdict in his clash against Sunil Kumar of Delhi. Doughty Kingson packed a lot of power in his punches. Though Sunil also had his good moments landing a few on target Kingson was the unanimous winner.

Laishram Bikramjit, another Manipur boxer but playing for the BSF who represented the country in the Asian Junior Boxing Championship, was impressive against Mohammed Shabuddin of Andhra Pradesh. The Andhra boxer having the advantage of height, was able to evade blows thrown initially. After the third round which proved to be devoid of action, Laishram went for the ‘kill’ in the final round and was adjudged a worthy winner.

Haryana boxer Subodh Kumar dealt a few punches on Ram Kumar Gautam of Delhi in the second round of the light welter weight bout which saw him win emerge winner. Similarly in an earlier bout H. Deven Singh of Assam Rifles gave a good account of himself in his bout against Tej Karan Sharma of Punjab. Tej Karan put up a gallant fight before bowing out. Sukhwinder Singh of Sikh Regimental Centre won a unanimous decision against Sachin Kumar of Chandigarh.

An impressive left jab unleashed by N. Rocky Meeti of Assam Rifles on Vikas Dahiya of Delhi at the start of the first round drew a round of applause from a handful of supporters. Rocky again gave the same treatment to his rival in the next only to be paid back in the same fashion when a piercing right from Vikas landed straight on his face. Vikas surprised Rocky with a barrage of punches soon thereafter , but Rocky acquitted himself well to be declared the winner.

S.K. Thapa of Assam Rifles giving a impressive display forced M. Senthill of Tamil Nadu to retire in the first round in a fly weight category contest.

North Zone pile up 391 for 4
From M.S. Unnikrishnan

NEW DELHI, Jan 25 — North Zone made full use of a Godsend opportunity to bat first, and piled up 391 for four in 90 overs on the first day of the four-day Duleep Trophy league match against Central Zone at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground here today.

The bumbling captaincy of Central skipper Amay Khuraisya, who put North into bat after winning the toss on a placid track, was made full use of by the hosts to hit up some quick runs in the morning, and then batted with gay abandon to put themselves at a position of strength at draw of stumps. North need to go for an outright victory, to retain the crown, as South Zone too are in hot pursuit on the title trail.

Dinesh Mongia was batting on 78 (181m, 123b,13x4) and Ritender Singh Sodhi was unbeaten on 34 (93m, 48b, 5x4) at close of play.

Khuraisya seemed to have made a big miscalculation by putting North in, considering the fact that the hosts have a solid batting lineup, and variety in spin bowling too, to exploit the local conditions, as the wicket is known to take spin when the match gets old.

Vijay Dahiya and Vikram Rathore gave a blistering start to the North innings, when they knocked in the first 100 runs in 106 minutes, off 23.2 overs. They spared none of the Central bowlers, as Shalab Srivastava, J.P. Yadav, Devendra Bundela, Murali Kartik and Rahul Kanwat all suffered from the sledge-hammer batting of the North openers. The Central bowling was also wayward, as they conceded 24 no balls, with Yadav and Bundela contributing 9 and 12, respectively.

Dahiya and Rathore put on 188 runs for the first wicket in 184 minutes off 276 balls before Central achieved their first breakthrough when Rathore fell six runs short of his century (94: 184m, 130b, 19x4), edging into the hands of wicketkeeper Abhay Sharma off the bowling of J.P. Yadav, in the 45th over.

After the addition of nine more runs to the total, Vijay Dahiya also departed, caught by Abhay Sharma off Kanwat for 81 (200m, 153b, 15x4). Dahiya had a reprieve at 21 when he was floored by Yadav at second slip, off Bundela. Yuvraj Singh and Dinesh Mongia continued the good batting work for North, and when the stand was gaining in momentum, Yuvraj fell, trying to slash Kanwat, and missed to be bowled for 34.

Scoreboard

Perfect 10 for Mohanty

AGARTALA, Jan 25 (PTI) — Lanky speedster Debashish Mohanty captured all the 10 wickets in the South Zone first innings to set a new bowling record in Duleep Trophy cricket tournament at the MBB Stadium here today.

The Orissa swing bowler returned with a dream figure of 19-5-46-10 after South Zone elected to bat first on the opening day of their four-day Duleep Trophy tie against East Zone.

Mohanty, who has generally returned with impressive bowling figures this season, capitalised on the low bounce of the track which looks under-prepared for a four-day contest as South Zone were bundled out for a paltry 113, 25 minutes after the lunch break.

Mohanty eclipsed the previous record of D.N. Gupta, who had taken nine for 55 in a Duleep Trophy match between East Zone and North Zone in 1962.

South Zone were three for no loss in their second innings at close.

They were bundled out for 113 in their first innings and then dismissed East Zone for 124.

Scores:

South Zone (1st innings): 113 all out (D. Mohanty 10/46).

East Zone (1st innings): 124 all out ( J. Srinath 6/32).

South Zone (2nd innings): 3 for no loss.

Row over Maradona
DUBAI: An unseemly row has broken out over a much-hyped match featuring Diego Maradona with the football legend’s agent here dissociating from the event and the organiser refusing to pick up the bill of his swelling entourage. The Chairman of the organising committee of the testimonial match told a Dubai daily that he would not pay for three more people accompanying the football legend. “If he wants to bring them to Dubai it will be on his account” he said. Maradona’s agent Mohammed Humaida, meanwhile, failed to confirm the star’s arrival. “I do not know if he is coming or not” he said adding that he did not want to be Maradona’s agent anymore. “I will only believe it when I see him at the Dubai international airport coming out of the Emirates flight from Frankfurt,” he said, putting the whole programme under a cloud. The match is scheduled to be played on February 7 at the Al Maktoum Stadium here. — PTI
