William sisters, Hingis stay on course

MELBOURNE, Jan 20 (Reuters) — The Williams sisters set their sights on top seed Martina Hingis today as they crushed unseeded opponents to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open.

With attention starting to focus on possible Hingis-Williams showdowns in the later rounds, former Australian Open champion mary pierce was barely noticed as she bowed out.

The seventh seed was beaten 3-6, 2-6 by unheralded Paola Suarez of Argentina.

Greg Rusedski led the charge in the men’s singles. The Briton threw the top half of the draw open when he beat world No 1 Gustavo Kuerten two days ago and returned to crush German qualifier Lars Burgsmuller 6-1 6-2 6-1.

Rusedski’s win gave Britain two players in the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time since John Lloyd and Robin Drysdale reached that stage in December 1977.

Fourth and fifth seeds Swede Magnus Norman and Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov also progressed despite dropping sets to lesser ranked opponents.

Kafelnikov, winner in 1999 and runner-up last year, beat American Chris Woodruff 6-7 7-5 6-2 6-3.

“I probably would say I’m playing well, but how well we shall find out in eight or nine days... Or may be even two days,’’ Kafelnikov said.

Norman, runner-up at the French Open last year, downed a persistent Alex Calatrava of Spain 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Hingis shrugged off an indifferent start to beat French Wildcard Virginie Razzano 7-5 6-1 as temperatures at Melbourne Park hovered around 35 degrees Celsius.

The Swiss has appeared in the last four Australian Open finals — winning three of them — but may have to beat both Venus and Serena Williams to get that far this year.

She beat Serena in the quarterfinals on the way to winning the Sydney title last week.

Hingis is yet to drop a set in the tournament but was tested by 1999 Australian Open junior champion Razzano in a first set lasting 39 minutes — about the same time it took her to win her first and second round matches.

She said she was looking forward to the challenge from the Williams sisters, neither of whom has played much tennis since last year.

“I looked at the draw and it was like, quarterfinals and already serena,’’ Hingis said. “But in a way I thought, the sooner the better because they haven’t played that many matches.’’

Sixth seed Serena ensured she stayed in the race to meet Hingis with a 6-1, 6-4 mauling of Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn.

Big sister Venus, the third seed, then stepped on to centre court and powered into the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-1 win over unseeded Czech Denisa Chladkova.

Serena forms the first part of the Williams hurdle for Hingis whose next opponent is unseeded Rita Grande of Italy.

“I beat Serena in Sydney last week. My confidence is high and hopefully there will be the same result if I have to play her again,” Hingis said.

Serena will play unseeded Czech Daja Bedanova in the fourth round after she beat the ninth seed Elena Dementieva of Russia 2-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Venus, the current US Open and Wimbledon champion, then shapes up as the most likely semifinal opponent for either Hingis or her little sister. Not surprisingly, she said the tournament was reaching an important stage.

“The second week is when you really have to be ready to play,” Venus said.

She needed just 51 minutes to eliminate 53rd-ranked Chladkova, pouncing to thump winners against the error-prone Czech who nonetheless had turned in her best performance at a Grand Slam by reaching the third round.

Venus was barely on court long enough for fans to decide whether she had sewn shut the revealing slit across the front of her eye-catching two-piece outfit which has grabbed headlines during the tournament.

“It’s the same outfit,” Venus confirmed afterwards.

Her next opponent is 1999 Australian Open runner-up Amelie Mauresmo. The Frenchwoman, seeded 13, beat Croatian Iva Majoli 6-4, 6-2, and showed few signs of the back injury which cut short her title defence in Sydney last week.

Pierce was only a shadow of the player who last year added the French Open crown to her 1995 Australian Open title.

The 26-year-old only returned to tennis this month after pulling out of the US Open in September with tendinitis in her shoulder. She played with her left leg heavily strapped and said she considered pulling out because of a strained hip muscle.

Her conqueror Suarez will meet 10th seed Amanda Coetzer in the next round after the South African beat Marlene Weingartner of Germany 6-2, 6-4.

Pierce joins Conchita Martinez, Chanda Rubin and Amy Frazier as the seeded casualties from the first week.

South African Wayne Ferreira also failed to reach the fourth round. The 10th seed was upset 0-6, 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 by Swede Andreas Vinciguerra.

Ferreira said he hurt a finger on his left hand catching a ball during the pre-match warm-up. A trainer taped the injury, which Ferreira said made it painful to play his double-fisted backhand.

The French had reason to be happy after 15th seed Arnaud Clement and 16th seed Sebastien Grosjean both scored straight sets wins to reach the fourth round.

Hingis, a five-time Grand Slam singles winner, returned to action later on Saturday alongside Monica Seles as they beat American Jennifer Capriati and Yugoslav Jelena Dokic 6-3, 6-3 in the women’s doubles second round. Hingis and Seles play the Belgian duo Kim Clijsters and Laurence Courtois in the third round of the doubles.

Fazal, Tomashevich win ITF doubles

KOLKATA, Jan 20 (UNI) — Top seed Syed Fazaluddin of India and Dmitri Tomashevich of Uzbekistan repeated their Jorhat leg performance of last week to upstage the Czech duo of Joraslav Levinsky and Michal Navratil 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 in straight sets in the ITF Futures Tennis meet at South Club here today.

The doubles pair of Fazaluddin and Tomashevich are richer by $ 315 and 18 ATP points each while the losers have to make do with $ 165 and 12 ATP points each.

Fazal, enthused by a home crowd, set the mood for the day as he sent down an ace on the second serve in the first game itself. The third game lasted the longest and Navratil had to save five break points before he could manage to retain his service game. In the ninth game Fazal sent down two consecutive aces.

The set, however, went to a tie-break as both held on to their services. In the tie-break, which was almost a see-saw affair, Fazaluddin and Tomashevich prevailed over their Czech rivals to win 8-6.

Inspired by the first set victory, in the second set Fazaluddin and Tomashevich broke the Czechs in the very first game 2-0.

But the Czech duo in the fourth game drew level 2-2, breaking the rivals. However, Fazaluddin and Tomashevich broke the Czechs in the fifth and seventh game to win the second set 6-2 and wrap up the issue.

Fazal had six aces while Tomashevich had one ace and one double fault. On the other side Navratil had two aces and one double fault to his credit while partner and compatriot Levinsky had no aces or double fault.

In the singles sixth-seeded Jaroslav Levinsky (Czech Republic) won defeating third seed Martin Spottle of Austria 7-6(7-3), 7-6 (7-3).

Levinsky was richer by a purse of $ 1300 while Martin got $ 900.

The first set, which went on for 38 minutes, saw both Levinsky and spottle starting on an even note. Both the pairs resorted to fast pace and power game and the match went to tie-break as both held on to their services.

Yugoslavia trounce Romania in quarters

MARGAO, Jan 20 (UNI) — Yugoslavia today played true to their reputation, trouncing Romania 2-0 to sail into the semifinals of the Sahara Millennium Super Soccer Cup tournament played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Fatorda here today.

Yugoslavia will now meet the winners of Jordan and Japan in the semifinals on January 23 at Kolkata.

The goals for the winners came through captain Ilic Sasa in the 32nd minute and through Bogdonovic Igor in the 44th minute of the first half.

Romania with their morale high after a big win over Hong Kong in their last group match today looked a confused side and lacked co-ordination and also missed some easy chances.

Yugoslavia, with a control of midfield, went into attack right from the kick-off with short passes which earned them dividends the 32nd minute of the first half through skipper Sasa. The goal was a fine combine move after he received the ball from left flank from Bogdonovic Igor, who quickly passed in it to Sasa, who made no mistake to tap into the net.

Earlier, in the 14th minute, Yugoslavia came with a good move when Rasovicvuk collected a ball from the mid field and moved down dangerously gribbling passed rival defenders and only to beat the goalkeeper. However, wasted a sitter.

Yugoslavia today played like a well-oiled machine with excellent passing, trapping and kicking. Inspired by the first goal, they attacked vigorously from both the flanks and increased their lead in the 44th minute of the first half through Bogdanovic Igor, who collected a fine pass from Girkovic in the box and unleashed a power-packed shot giving no chance to Romanian goalkeeper Anghel Eugen.

On changing ends, Yugoslavia continued to hold sway but failed to extend their lead in the 55th minute when Ivic Uldamir sent a fine cross in the goal but Bogdanovic Igor failed to control the ball. With only the goalkeeper to beat, he shot wide.

Romania made a desperate attempt to reduce the margin in the second half but Yugoslavia defence was hard nut to crack. In the 24th minute Romania had almost reduced the margin but Yugoslavia goalkeeper lucic Zarko brought a brilliant save of a shot from Sasu Marias.

The Yugoslavian team could have further consolidated their lead in the 27th minute but Romanian goalkeeper nicely saved a left footer from Geramic Dragogue.

Japan play Jordan

KOLKATA (PTI): Strong contenders Jordan may find the going tough when they clash with a spirited Japan in the quarter finals of the Sahara Millennium Cup football tournament at the Salt Lake Stadium here tomorrow.

Jordan, who emerged champion in group-3 with an all-win record, can hardly afford to be complacent against the young Japanese players who have been quite impressive in the tournament so far.

Jordan, who have brought a number of talented club players for the meet, opened their campaign with a solitary goal victory against Romania and then demolished lowly Hong Kong 2-0 in their second match.

Runners-up in group-4, Japan thrashed Uzbekistan 2-0 in their opening match and then lost to Chile by a solitary goal in their next outing. They completed their league engagements with a convincing 2-0 triumph over Bahrain.

The Japanese team, mainly comprising university students, have played a cohesive game and it remains to be seen whether the youngsters can get their act together in what promises to be an exciting contest under floodlights. Jordan, who have relied on an attacking brand of soccer, will no doubt try to score an early goal to put pressure on their opponents who have shown that they can defend well also.

The Japanese have taken full advantage of their speed and stamina.

Bangladesh lads outclass Lanka; Malaysia in semis
From Amardeep Bhattal
Tribune News Service

LUDHIANA, Jan 20 — Bangladesh and Malaysia qualified for the semifinals of the third Asian School Hockey Championship which entered its third day at the Punjab Agricultural University grounds here today.

While Bangladesh, who have been clubbed with India and Sri Lanka in pool ‘A’ outclassed Sri Lanka 3-0,Malaysia moved into the last four by virtue of a 2-0 win over Singapore in pool ‘B’. Incidentally, this was Malaysia’s second win in the tournament after they trounced Iran 6-0 yesterday. Tomorrow India, who have also qualified for the semifinals, will battle it out with Bangladesh for the top spot in pool ‘A’ while the race for the second berth from pool ‘B’ is now between Singapore and Uzbekistan. Iran are already out of contention following consecutive defeats at the hands of Uzbekistan and Malaysia.

For a change, Bangladesh fielded a superior team than the one which did duty in the inaugural edition at Chandigarh in 1994. Incidentally, Bangladesh had then lost 1-7 and o-7 to India. The margin of victory for the team from Dhaka today could have been higher but for some close misses. As the Bangladesh coach Mohammed Nurul Islam said, the absence of a couple of experienced players, one of whom is down with jaundice, did affect the team’s showing. “Anyway, a coach’s thirst for goals is unending,” he said in a lighter vein.

The Bangladesh team from the Bangladesh Institute of Sports, Dhaka, is practically the same outfit which took part in the under-16 tournament where they finished runners-up to India. They displayed fine stickwork with Sri Lanka once again being at the receiving end after the 0-12 drubbing at the hands of India yesterday.

On commencement of the proceedings, a cross by Mohammed Ashraful Islam from the left went abegging as Mazharul Islam failed to tap the ball into an empty goal. However, after a series of raids, Bangladesh finally forged ahead when defender Yamin Hossain’s powerful hit off a penalty corner in the ninth minute gave Rasika Wikramasinghe under the Lankan bar absolutely no chance. Yamin could have added another goal in similar fashion but a team-mate faltered in stopping the ball.

The second goal came in the 20th minute when Bangladesh were awarded another penalty corner. Following the push,Yamin Hossain rushed to take up his position towards the right from where he had a clear view of the goal. His powerful hit taken with confidence was bang on target (2-0).

In the second half, Bangladesh were once again in full command. Four minutes from resumption, a penalty push by Maksud Aslam was followed up by Yamin who aimed well but the ball went out after striking a rival’s stick.

Sri Lanka came into the picture for a brief spell when off the second penalty corner Yaseen Mulafer tried to move in but he was dispossessed in the nick of time.

Thereafter, it was Bangladesh all the way. A flick by Ashraful Islam missed the target by inches but a few minutes later Ashraful made up for his lapse by scoring a field goal after Hosne Mubarak fumbled in intercepting a long ball inside the ‘D’.

Earlier, Malaysia enjoying an upper hand throughout, scored once in each half to overpower Singapore in pool ‘B’. The fast-paced encounter was well contested but Malaysia had to wait till the 34th minute to take the lead. Off the eighth penalty corner,Norhisham Saari’s push was neatly deflected into the goalmouth by Prabakaran (1-0).

In the second half, Malaysia once again started dictating terms. It was as late as in the 63rd minute that Malaysia managed to consolidate the lead. A cross by Izwan Hassan from the right was followed by Ikhmal Abd. Jabar’s well taken hit to which Singapore custodian Jeremy Leong Guoqiang had no answer.

Malaysia earned as many as 14 penalty corners while Singapore could force only one.

Sunday’s fixtures: Singapore v Iran — 10 a.m.; India v Bangladesh — 12 noon; Uzbekistan v Malaysia — 2.30 p.m.

Sri Lanka grab quick wickets

CENTURION, Jan 20 (AFP) — Sri Lanka overcame the absence of two key strike bowlers as they grabbed three South African wickets on the first morning of the third and final Test at Centurion Park today.

South Africa were 94 for three at lunch, with Daryll Cullinan (39 not out), leading a recovery with some aggressive batting.

Sri Lanka were hit by the late withdrawal of offspinner Muralitharan and left-arm opening bowler Chaminda Vaas. Both suffered groin injuries during the final limited overs international in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka sent South Africa in on a lively pitch in humid, hazy conditions and their fast bowlers gained bounce and sideways movement.

Nuwan Zoysa had Herschelle Gibbs caught behind for one and fellow left-arm bowler Ruchira Perera, who arrived as an emergency replacement last evening, cut short a promising innings by Boeta Dippenaar, who was caught behind for 20.

Jacques Kallis was caught at second slip off Dilhara Fernando to reduce South Africa to 54 for three.

Cullinan took the fight to Sri Lanka, however, hitting three fours in the next over from Zoysa and later punishing Fernando for 4, 6 and 2 in an over.

The withdrawal of Muralitharan was a big blow to the tourists. The offspinner, who has taken 303 wickets in Tests, more than twice as many as any of his countryman, was expected to play despite his injury. He took a full part in his team’s net practice yesterday.

Perera, (24) arrived from Nairobi, Kenya, where he was touring with the Sri Lanka A team, and was thrust straight into his third Test appearance.

The decision by Sanath Jayasuriya, the Sri Lankan captain, to send South Africa in was no surprise, both because of the potential for his team’s bowlers to gain assistance and as a defensive measure — after Sri Lanka’s collapse to 95 all out on the first day of the second Test in Cape Town earlier this month.

England thrive on dropped catches

CHENNAI, Jan 20 (PTI) — Shoddy fielding by Indians helped England reach 286 for three in their first innings at close on the opening day of the four-day second cricket Test match here today with opener Nicky Peng compiling 132 runs.

Thriving on four dropped catches, Peng was involved in two useful partnerships to safely take the visitors to a decent total. The Indians, in all, dropped five catches.

Electing to bat, England were off to a good start with both openers John Sadler and Peng playing confidently.

They put up 57 runs for the opening wicket before Sadler was run out when off-spinner Dharmichand grounded a return catch of Peng and the ball hit the non-striker’s stumps. Sadler made 22.

Peng, who was joined by his captain Ian Bell, played some aggressive shots but survived an easy chance on 76, dropped by Gambhir at cover off Dharmichand.

Then Dharneswar dropped him off V.Sivaramakrishnan. Bell also had a reprieve when he was on 8 with the total on 81 for one.

Peng duly reached his century with an ondrive to the fence off Ishan Ganda. Bell made 61 with 11 fours before being caught at cover by Dharmichand off Ganda. The two put on 142 runs for the second wicket in 35.4 overs

Peng then added 52 for the third wicket with Pratt before falling to a running catch at short fine leg by Ganda off V. Sivaramakrishan. His career best 132 came in 290 minutes off 240 balls with 11 fours and five sixes.

At close, pratt was batting on 39 and G. Muchall on 14.

Wadekar fails to become MCA chief

MUMBAI, Jan 20 (UNI) — The adage that cricketers do not always make good administrators seems to have been taken too seriously by the members of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) as only one (Lalchand Rajput) out of the seven Test cricketers in the fray for the managing committee of the MCA was elected, polls for which were held here.

In one of the most bitterly fought elections held yesterday, which had acquired a political hue with the entry of the former Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar into the fray for the post of President at the last moment against Sena backed candidate former Test captain Ajit Wadekar, saw the politician prevail over the cricketer to become the new President of the MCA.

The elections to one of the richest sports body in the country became a prestige issue between the Shiv Sena who was supporting Ajit Wadekar and the Nationalist Congress Party as allegations and counter allegations flew thick and fast in the lead up to the elections.

The Shiv Sena, whose leader Manohar Joshi was the outgoing President suddenly wanted a cricketer to become the President of the MCA, stating that it is the players who should run the MCA and leave politicians out of it, forgetting that it was an politician (Manohar Joshi) who was incharge of the affairs of the MCA for the past many years.

Sharad Pawar on the other hand stated that a man of his position could help the MCA garner more funds and with his political clout help solve many vexed issues including that of the Garware Club, of which he is the President.

The Garware Club residing on the premises of the MCA is locked in a legal tangle with the MCA on various issues, which Mr Pawar had stated that he would solve if he was elected President.

North Zone humble East

GUWAHATI, Jan 20 (PTI) — North Zone today handed a crushing 237-run defeat to East Zone who were dismissed on 156 in their second innings on the final day of the four-day Duleep Trophy league match here today while chasing 394 to win.

North, who scored 206 and 268 in their two innings, dismissed their opposition cheaply for the second time in the match after East were out for a paltry 81 in their first innings.

East Zone began a difficult run-chase on a faltering note this morning when their opener Nikhil Haldipur was caught by substitute P. Sharma of Ashish Nehra with the score on 15.

Skipper Shiv Sundar Das with Rashmi Ranjan Parida tried to stabilise the East innings to some extent before Das was caught by Nehra off Reetinder Singh Sodhi when the total was 64.

Parida was the next to go in the 19th over scoring 19 runs when he was caught by Virendra Sehwag off Surendra Singh.

Thereafter the East Zone batsmen fell like nine-pins with Rohan Gavaskar, Sanjay Raul and Deep Dasgupta failing miserably. Gavaskar scored only six.

Rahul Sanghvi was the most successful bowler claiming three wickets while Nehra, R.S. Sodhi and Sukhvinder Singh took three, two and one wicket, respectively.

Navmid, Punia set new records

BANGALORE, Jan 20 (PTI) — Eleven gold medals were decided in the morning session, with five record breaking performances on the fourth and last day of the 16th National Junior Athletics here today.

In the boys’ under-16 long jump, K.J. Clinton of Kerala leaped to a record distance of 6.96 metres to establish a new meet record and clinched gold in the second attempt. But his efforts to improve it further failed. The previous record was at 6.86 metres credited to M. Udiyar of Tamil Nadu in December 1996.

Discuss throw for the boys’ under-16 saw the emergence of a new meet record from C.H. Ankush Punia of Uttar Pradesh who threw the disc to a new distance of 59.30 metres erasing the previous record of 58.76 metres.

In the girls’ under-16, 3000 metres walk, Andhra’s S. Pavani established a new record with a timing of 15 minutes 12.00 seconds. She eclipsed the previous record by Deeepamala Devi of Manipur, 15 minutes 26.55 second created in January 2000.

Air-India beat SAIL, enter semis

MUMBAI, Jan 20 (UNI) — Air-India (Mumbai) today posted a comfortable 3-1 quarterfinal win over the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) of Delhi and will now meet Punjab and Sind Bank, Jalandhar in the semifinals on Monday in the Gold Cup hockey tournament.

Today at the Mahindras stadium, the match looked like to be a washout when Air-India captain Edgar Aranha scored a brace in the first eight minutes and when another former international Gavin Ferreira made the half time score of 3-0. But SAIL pulled one back in the 10th minute of the second half and to their credit kept the rivals away from scoring.

Air-India opened in the seventh minute. Ferreira’s tremendous shot from 25 yards proved unstoppable for a clutch of SAIL players but not for Aranha, who was lurking a few yards away from the goal. He just glided it into the goal. In the next minute he stole the ball midway from Dheeraj Kumar and weaned past the defenders to score a solo goal.
