Windies enter final

PERTH, Feb 2 (AP) — West Indies secured a berth in the final of the tri-series one-day international with a convincing 44-run victory over Zimbabwe in their last league encounter here today.

West Indies, electing to bat, were all out for 178 runs thanks largely to Brian Lara’s unbeaten 83 and then dismissed Zimbabwe for 134.

Nixon McLean claimed three wickets for 21 runs while Marlon Samuels had the figures of 3-25.

The best of three finals start next Wednesday.

Australia are already through to the finals with an all-win record.

The last league match between Australia and Zimbabwe on Sunday now has only academic interest left in it.

Lara hit six fours in his 98-ball knock.

Apart from Lara, only Ricardo Powell (37 from 36 balls) and Daren Ganga (22 from 57) made significant scores in an innings that featured five run outs.

Bowling honours were shared by medium-pacer Mluleki Nkala (2-34) and spin bowler Dirk Viljoen (2-31).

Zimbabwe had grounds to be disappointed with the umpiring yet again, having been on the unlucky end of a number of borderline decisions during the series.

Opening batsman Daren Ganga drove a fast delivery from Bryan Strang to mid-on, where Heath Streak raced in and appeared to hold a fine diving catch.

Both umpires appeared to have a clear view of the incident-t, but called on third umpire Randolph Woolridge to study the film and adjudicate. He examined the footage for two minutes before ruling in Ganga’s favour much to Zimbabwe’s chagrin.

The winners will meet Australia in the best-of-three finals starting in Sydney on Wednesday.

Career-best knock by Gagan Khoda

PANAJI, Feb 2 (UNI) — A career-best unbeaten double tone by Gagan Khoda (246) and belligerent unbeaten 75 by Yere Goud and their unseparated 187-run partnership for the fourth wicket enabled Central Zone amass 469 for 3 in their first innings at the close of the second day’s play of the four day Duleep Trophy league tie here today.

Central Zone, who skittled out South Zone for a paltry 141 all out yesterday, gained a first innings lead of 328 runs over South looked set to score an outright win.

At stumps Khoda and Goud were at the crease.

Resuming at the score of 178 for 2, the overnight pair of Khoda and Kaif, punished both the seamers and spinners with a flurry of strokes, thus taming the South attack. Both the batsmen were in an aggressive mood, scoring at almost every ball and added a brilliant 176 for the third wicket.

South Zone used eight bowlers with intervals but none could break Khoda and Kaif’s stand until 282 on the scoreboard, when Kaif lost his wicket on 69, of off-spinner Ashish Kapoor caught by Tilak Naidu.

Goud then joined Khoda and both continued to keep the scoreboard moving. The former reached his half century in 92 balls with eight hits to the fence, while Khoda’s career best knock (246) was laced with 24 fours and five sixes off 308 deliveries.

At close of play both Khoda and Goud had an unseparated partnership of 187 runs.

Martina Hingis, Kournikova advance

TOKYO, Feb 2 (AFP) — Martina Hingis pulverized hopes of a local crowd by eliminating Japan’s ace Ai Sugiyama to make a berth in the semi-finals of the Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament today.

The Swiss world number one took the first seven games in a row before Sugiyama started to fight back in the second set, but stood firm in the decider for a 6-0 5-7 6-1 victory.

Russian pin-up girl Anna Kournikova, third seed, wriggled her way through to a 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 win and avenged her loss to Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France at Wimbledon last season.

Kournikova lost her serve to go down 4-5 and 5-6 in the first set, but each time she broke back to force a tie-breaker in which she chalked up a comfortable 4-1 lead before getting into her rhythm.

Eighth seed Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria earned a semi-final place against Hingis when she outclassed the last local hope, Shinobu Asagoe, 6-1 7-6 (7/1) in 85 minutes.

"There were close calls in the second set, but that was not the problem. That was more of me losing concentration, I wasn’t focused there," Hingis said of her second set lapse.

"Still I was serving for the match at 5-4 and 30-all. I should have finished there, but she played a few good points and she was still hanging on there. I have to give her credit for that."

"But in the third set, I took a higher risk again, especially towards the end, I served better again. That was the key," added Hingis.

Sugiyama, whose only win over Hingis came at the Atlanta Olympics, got off to a sluggish start with a double fault on a break point, symbolizing the remainder of the first set.

But Sugiyama never hesitated to attack, forcing Hingis to make some errors, and came back from one service break down three times in the second set. She broke again in the 12th game to even the match.

However, Hingis soon steadied herself and, although she lost the second game, never let the momentum get away to finish off the match in 96 minutes.

Hingis stretched her win-loss record against Sugiyama to 5-1.

"Although I lost the first set 6-0, I was playing well, I had a chance to make it 3-3, so I never felt disappointed," said Sugiyama.

"I tried to galvanize myself in the second set and I started to play in my rhythm and hit better afterwards.

"But Martina has no vulnerable point. Maybe her second serve is the only chance that I can attack. So I attacked on her second serve. I think that’s why I broke her serve several times in the second set," added Sugiyama.

Amanjot, Sania tennis champs
By Arvind Katyal

CHANDIGARH, Feb 2 — Amanjot Singh of Chandigarh avenged city mate Sunil Kumar’s humiliation, demolishing Rohan Gajjar 6-3, 6-2 in 62 minutes to romp home with the prestigious boys singles title on the concluding day of the Drish ITF Junior Tennis Tournament at the CLTA courts, Sector 10, here today. The girls singles title was grabbed by top seed Sonia Mirza, the 14-year old girl from Hyderabad who came from behind in both sets to down second seed Megha Vakharia in 65 minutes, thus becoming the owner of two titles as she already won the doubles title yesterday.

Local lad and darling of the city, left hander Sunil Kumar, however, had the consolation of winning the boys doubles title today when he, along with Vinod Sewa, justified their seeding by outplaying Rohan Gajjar and Vikrant Sane in three sets.

The boys singles final proved to be exciting with everyone in the spectator gallery waiting to see, how Amanjot would fare today. Hard hitter Amanjot who never believed in long rallies began with 15-0, then went to 30-0, which led Rohan to bounce back and the two slices down the line enabled the Mumbai boy to wrap up the first game lead at 1-0 which was then equalised by Amanjot at 1-1. The St Stephen’s School student, however, was in high spirits when he pushed down Rohan to the baseline and surged ahead at 2-1. Rohan came back to make it 2-2. and then 3-3. At this moment, Amanjot made a clean sweep, making it 4-3 with no break in serve. Then there was no stopping him as the Hoshiarpur born Amanjot completed the set in 35 minutes at 6-3.

The reigning national junior champion in the under-18 section, Rohan varied his gameplan, compelling Amanjot to come near the nets. It was all in vain for Amanjot who took a 2-0 lead to dominate from the beginning. The ‘killer’ of Sunil, Rohan was not able to display his earlier form and was able to capture one more game till the score read 1-4 in his favour. The ‘lion’ in Amanjot roared and he stopped Rohan’s fury by clinching the tie in just 27 minutes to emerge as a new hero of the meet.

The girls final between Sania-Megha went on unexpected lines as Delhi ITF’ meet runner-up Sania began on a bad note, surrendering 1-4 to the Mumbai girl, a trainee of Sandeep Kirtane. Sania watched by her mother, forced Megha to commit mistakes repeatedly at the nets. As a result Megha lost concentration and bowed out 4-6, allowing five games in a row to Sania and the set ended in 36 minutes.

History repeated itself in the second set when again after a handsome 4-1 lead, Megha lost control of the match and began losing to eventually surrender the all-important tie, which saddened her coach, Sandeep. Ultimately Sania won at 6-4 in 29 minutes.

The boys doubles final was a thriller as the Sunil-Vinod combination, after winning the first set in 12 minutes at 6-0, lost the second at 4-6. This lacklustre approach of the top seed proved fatal as the Rohan-Vikrant pair took maximum advantage and took the third set to tie breaker. Sunil-Vinod duo won 7-6, (7-4) to bag the doubles title.

Results: (All finals): boys singles—Amanjot Singh (Ind) b Rohan Gajjar (Ind) 6-3, 6-2. Doubles: Sunil Kumar Sipeya and Vinod Sewa (Ind) b Rohan Gajjar and Vikrant Sane (Ind) 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).

Girls singles: Sania Mirza (Ind) b Megha Vakharia (Ind) 6-4, 6-4.

JCT go down to Vasco

MARGAO, Feb 2 (PTI) — Depleted Zee Churchill face a tough task when they take on upbeat East Bengal in the National Football League at Nehru Stadium here tomorrow.

Local league champions Zee Churchill have resumed the challenge in the national league on a far from bright note losing to Vasco (0-1) and FC Kochin (1-2) and holding to a goalless draw to the SBT.

Following Zee Churchill’s dismal performances in the ongoing league, coach Gregory Testvi has been asked to resign, team management said.

Zee Churchill, who have one point from three matches, look strong on paper but have to prove themselves on the field and will be looking for the home advantage to get the right start.

They have a sound midfield comprising Rocky Baretto, Noel Wilson, Jose Colaco, Andre Requena. In the defence they have Husseni Osumanu, Mahesh Gawali, Mir Farooq Hayder and Ansah Edward forms the last defence line.

Zee Churchill’s fortunes will depend on the upfront Francis Silveira and Edson De Crasto who have not lived up to their reputation as they missed close scoring chances.

On the other hand, East Bengal are playing well except their poor performance against ITI which they lost 1-0. They have six points from three matches.

East Bengal will bank on their foreign recruits defender Jackson Agaypong, Suleh Musah, Medio Isiaka Awoyemi and striker Omoloja Olalekan.

Omoloja, who played for Salgaocar two years back, opened his campaign with a goal against the SBT. He will be assisted by Bijen Singh in the upfront.

They have a reliable midfield comprising Isiaka, Chapman, Chandan Das and Dipankar Roy.

The defence will be manned by Suleh Musah, Jackson, Dipak Mondal and Rattan Singh.

East Bengal coach Manohar Battercharge, who took over two weeks ago, said he was happy with the team’s performance. “They are playing well and hope they continue to play in the same spirit and win tomorrow”, added Manohar.

PSEB to lift ban on recruitment
From Our Sports Reporter

PATIALA, Feb 2 — The Punjab Power Minister, Mr Sikandar Singh Maluka, has assured that the ban on recruitment of sportspersons in Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) will be lifted shortly.

Mr Maluka gave this assurance to a delegation of the PSEB Sportsmen’s Welfare Federation which met him at his residence at Chandigarh on Wednesday. The delegation, which was led by the federation president Mr K.S. Dhillon, and general secretary, Mr Munish Kaushal, comprised several international and national-level sportspersons working in the board. The ban on sports recruitment has been in effect since the past couple of years and has lead to stagnation of sports activities in PSEB.

Mr Maluka also assured that promotion channels for sportspersons, which till now were blocked, will be opened soon and deserving sportspersons will be promoted on seniority basis.

In order to circumvent the ban, the board authorities were keeping sportspersons on contract basis for a period of three years. However, a couple of months ago a ban was imposed by the management on keeping sportspersons on contract basis due to which sports activity in the board virtually came to a halt.
