SHO suspended for dereliction of duty SONEPAT, Feb 5 — Mr Mohinder Singh Rana, Station House Officer of the Civil Lines police station, has been suspended on the charge of dereliction in performing official duty and not informing the authorities about the damage caused to the Haryana Roadways and DTC buses in attacks by the protesting ITI students in the city. According to official sources, this step had been taken as the state government, particularly the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, had taken a serious note of the violent incidents and directed the authorities concerned to take action against the officials found guilty of dereliction in performing their duty. The state government, reportedly, had also been contemplating to take action against Principal of the ITI who had also failed to inform the district and police authorities about the assembling of students in the institute before holding a march in the city to register their protest against the death of their co-student by the Haryana Roadways bus. The security arrangements here continued at vulnerable points today in the city. Barring the government ITI, all other schools and colleges functioned normally amidst tight security arrangements. Armed police pickets were also deployed at the railway station, bus stand, telephone exchange, head post office and other chowks in the city. Meanwhile, mediapersons of the national dailies here today started boycotting all government functions and press notes in protest against the alleged slapping of a local journalist by a gunman of the Deputy Commissioner. They also declared that the boycott would continue till the gunman offered his apology to the journalist in the presence of the DC and SP. |

Bhajan to organise
anti-Chautala rally HISAR, Feb 5 — Former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal said today that his proposed rally on March 4 at Bhiwani would mark the beginning of his campaign to dislodge the Chautala government. Addressing mediapersons here he said he had been waiting for the Chief Minister to do something for the people of Haryana since he had secured the popular verdict. Though the Chautala government would complete a year in office on March 2, nothing had been achieved so far. The former Chief Minister said he would declare a state-wide agitation to dislodge the Chautala government in the rally. He said he had the backing of the party high command for the rally and Mr Moti Lal Vora, General Secretary, All-India Congress Committee (AICC), would attend the rally. Mr Bhajan Lal hoped that all congressmen would join the rally. |
Decks cleared
for Bhajan Lal’s rally CHANDIGARH, Feb 5 — The decks have been cleared for the Bhiwani rally to be organised by the former Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Bhajan Lal, on March 4. A question mark had been put on the rally, which was being described as a show of strength by the Bhajan Lal camp, after the AICC general secretary, Mr Moti Lal Vora, had written to the Haryana Congress president, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, banning the holding of rallies and public meetings by any Congressman without the permission of the Pradesh Congress Committee(PCC). However, Mr Vora, who is in charge of party affairs in Haryana, told TNS on the telephone today that he and Mr Hooda would attend the rally, which means that now the rally will be virtually held under the banner of the PCC, even if the mobilisation will be done by supporters of Mr Bhajan Lal. Mr Vora said he had already talked to Mr Bhajan Lal, who had assured him that a proper invitation would be sent to Mr Hooda to attend the rally. Meanwhile, Mr Bhajan Lal has convened a meeting of his supporters in Delhi on February 9 to draw up a programme to make the rally a success. It was expected that at the Bhiwani rally, if not Mr Bhajan Lal himself, at least his supporters would have made speeches critical of Mr Hooda. Now with Mr Vora and Mr Hooda present, it will be difficult for Mr Bhajan Lal’s men to criticise, even indirectly, Mr
Hooda. |

Work on astroturf to begin soon AMBALA In Haryana, two places were chosen for laying of astroturf. While one is in Ambala, the other is in Gurgaon. The astroturf in Ambala is going to be laid at the War Heroes Memorial Stadium, Ambala Cantonment. A meeting regarding the global tenders were held today. The tenders for the astroturf in Ambala as well as Gurgaon are going to be floated together. Deputy Commissioner of Ambala, Mr D.D. Gautam, said the global tenders will be floated to invite parties who will lay the astroturf according to international specifications. “The work on laying of astroturf is expected to begin within the next 2 to 3 months. Once the process of inviting tenders is completed, the money will be released and work will immediately start on the astroturf,” he said. He said the work includes preparing of the surface before laying the astroturf, watering and proper drainage. Mr Gautam said once the astroturf was ready, then Ambala would find itself on the international hockey map. “It will give a tremendous boost to local talent,” he stressed. Hockey Olympian and Arjuna awardee, M.K. Kaushik, told Chandigarh Tribune that the astroturf would go a long way in improving the hockey standards. “Right now our youngsters play on grass field and when they go for playing on astroturf, they face a challenge in adjusting,” he said. With astroturf coming up so close to Shahbad, which is considered to be a nurturing ground for hockey, Kaushik felt that young players would not face difficulties while switching over to playing on astroturf in the international level. “Unlike in other countries, where young players start on the astroturf, it is not so here. However, this is going to change with two astroturf fields coming up in Haryana,” he said. To a query, Kaushik said the standard of Haryana players had not come down. “Due to opportunities in other organisation, they get to play for them,” he said. District Hockey Association member Satish Saini said it would provide a golden opportunity for the local talent to prove its mettle. “It will be an excellent learning ground for the local hockey players,” he said. He pointed out that one of the oldest hockey Olympians, Hukam Rai, hailed from Ambala. Besides Ambala had produced five international level players and Ambala had hosted the state hockey championship seven times. A hockey enthusiast explained that astroturf was basically a synthetic surface and polygrass was going to be put on the field. An area of about 6,000 square metres was going to have the astroturf, including the playing area. The astroturf surfaces close to Ambala include Chandigarh, Amritsar, Delhi and Gwalior. Local players, specially school and college students, teams of the Railways, Army Air Force, Indian Oil and players from the Shahbad hockey centre are likely to benefit from the
astroturf. |
