Aussies win in pulsating finish PERTH, Feb 4 (AFP) — A superb century by Stuart Carlisle was not enough to lift Zimbabwe to victory against Australia in the tri-nations series one-day clash here today. In a pulsating finish which had almost 20,000 spectators on their feet Australia scraped home by one run as seventh-wicket pair Douglas Marillier (12 not out) and Dirk Viljoen (1 not out) carried Zimbabwe to 301 for six after Australia had made 302 for five. It was Australia’s eighth successive win in the contest, but the home team had to fight tooth and nail to hold off their courageous opponents, who finished their programme with a solitary victory from their eight outings. Carlisle hammered 119 from 144 balls, smashing 11 fours and one six in his second century in limited-overs matches. He shared in a crucial fourth-wicket stand with Grant Flower of 187 in 120 minutes off 179 balls — a record for Zimbabwe for the fourth wicket, overtaking the 158 put on by Andy and Grant Flower against India last year. Carlisle reached the three-figure mark from 131 balls in 181 minutes, striking nine fours and a six. While happy to have mastered the Australian bowlers and shared in the record, Carlisle was angry with himself for possibly costing his side the game by taking one short run. The short run was called by Australian umpire Steve Davis long before it was realised the result would be so tight. After Gavin Rennie had fallen to Glenn McGrath for a duck in the opening over, Carlisle and Alistair Campbell revived Zimbabwe’s fortunes with a brave stand of 53 in the next 10 overs. That ended when express bowler Breet Lee struck in his first over, having Campbell caught by wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist for 27 off 34 balls. Andy Flower thrashed 24 (five fours) from 30 balls before being ousted by fast-medium bowler Nathan Bracken to make it 91 for three in the 19th over. Then Grant Flower joined Carlisle in Zimbabwe’s most productive liaison of the series, which threatened to lead the side to victory over the cock-a-hoop Australians. In the Australian innings, opening batsman Damien Martyn hammered his second one-day century. Playing before his home crowd, he made an unbeaten 144 from 149 balls, including 12 fours. Together with his vice-captain Adam Gilchrist, the opening pair gave Australia a lightning start, cracking 66 from the opening 12 overs. Gilchrist fell for 30 when he edged a fine delivery from Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak to wicketkeeper Andy Flower. Martyn and Ricky Ponting added another 44 runs for the second wicket before Ponting was run out for 32 from as many deliveries. Left-hander Michael Bevan helped Martyn add 94 runs for the third wicket before Bevan was trapped lbw by leg-spinner Brian Murphy. He made 44 off 56 balls without any boundary. In an exhilarating burst near the end of their innings, Ian Harvey slammed three successive sixes off left-arm spinner Dirk Viljoen. As he attempted another big hit off the same bowler, he was caught in the deep by Carlisle for 37 off 20 balls. SCOREBOARD Australia: A. Gilchrist c A. Flower b Streak 30 D. Martyn not out 144 R. England colts level series VIJAYAWADA, Feb 4 (UNI) — An impressive 93 by India’s M. Bisla went in vain as England’s left-arm off-spinner Robert Ferley took four wickets and broke the crucial fourth wicket partnership between the former and Arjun Yadav to enable the visitors to win by 31 runs with 2.4 overs to spare the second one-day under-19 international cricket match here today. With this win, England, who had lost the first one-dayer at Hyderabad on Friday last by three wickets, drew level 1-1. The England’s left arm spinner sealed the fate of the match in his team’s favour claiming three crucial wickets that of Arjuna Yadav (35), Indian skipper Ajay Yatra (0) and M. Bisla (93) in the space of nine balls in the 34th over of the Indian innings. England team coach Tim Boon’s strategy to include for the one-dayer Nadeem Malik, native of Pakistan and settled in Nottinghmshire, paid rich dividends as the medium pacer claimed the wickets of openers Gautam Gambhir (14) and A. Das (0) as also that of Amit Mishra (1) in his second spell. The Indians were in deep trouble when two-down batsman Alind Naidu (4) was caught by Mark Wallance off the bowling of Christ Tremlett when the scoreboard read 59. Then the Indian innings was steadied by Bisla, who hit as many as 13 boundaries in his quickfire 93 off 100 balls by staying at the wicket for 154 minutes and adding 94 runs for the fourth wicket with Arjun Yadav (35), son of former Test player Shivlal Yadav. After the departure of Bisla, the little Maninder Singh (31), a promising player from Madhya Pradesh, tried to give a semblence of resistance. But, the players at the other end departed at regular intervals. Ferley claimed the wicket of Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan when the latter was caught by Kadeerali. Asked what went wrong for the Indian team coach Roger Binny said: “England winning the toss and electing to bat made all the difference, they batted really well.” Earlier, with a captain’s knock of 91 by Ian Bell and his two useful partnerships with Nicky Peng and Kadeer Ali, England set a target of 249 for India to win the game. Davenport beats Hingis, lifts title TOKYO, Feb 4 (AFP) — Lindsay Davenport beat world number one Martina Hingis to win the Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament here today, regaining the title she won in 1998. The American former world number one used her powerful strokes from the outset and fired 14 aces to help her to a 6-7 (4/7) 6-4 6-2 victory over Hingis, who was aiming to take the event for a record fourth time. With her first title of the season and the 31st of her career, Davenport avenged her three-set loss to Hingis in the Sydney final last month. She also defeated Hingis when she won the 1998 final. Davenport, 24, stretched her win-loss record against Hingis to 13-10 in major tournaments and collected a check of $175,000. For Hingis, the winner here in 1997, 1999 and 2000, it was a second straight loss in a final following her surprising defeat to American Jennifer Capriati in the Australian open last week. She had to be satisfied with the $94,000 runner-up prize. MILAN: Second seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov was dumped out of the Milan Indoors Tournament here, losing a gritty three-set battle to Switzerland’s Roger Federer. Kafelnikov — the reigning Olympic champion — was completely outgunned by his seventh-seeded 19-year-old opponent, who held on to win 6-2 6-7 (4/7) 6-3. Federer wrapped up victory in style, serving out to love as Kafelnikov struggled to get to grips with his game. The Russian favourite looked unhappy throughout and appeared rattled by several dubious line calls that went against him. Federer will be playing in only the third final of his career. He faces Frenchman Julien Boutter, who overcame the challenge of resurgent Greg Rusedski in the earlier semifinal. Briton Rusedski was edged out after losing both sets on tie-breakers. The strong serves of both players dominated the game, but it was Boutter who had the edge over the Briton in their first meeting, winning 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/3). Boutter was in control in the tie-breaks and converted the match point with an ace. Rusedski, who ousted top seed Marat Safin on Friday, is still waiting for his first title since his triumph in Vienna in 1999. Defeat was a bitter disappoint ment for the Briton, who had fancied his chances of a shot at the tournament crown after defeating
Safin. His victory over the Russian followed a win against world number one Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil last month. |

Central Zone finish runners-up PANAJI, Feb 4 (UNI) — A brilliant knock of 150 by South Zone’s lefthanded batsman S. Sriram went in vain as Central Zone registered an authoritative an innings-and-14-run win over South Zone to finish runners-up on the last day of the four-day Duleep Trophy cricket league match played at Gymkhana Ground here today. South Zone, chasing to surpass a deficit of 409 runs, managed to score only 395 runs in 127.1 overs 14 minutes after tea. With today’s win Central Zone with 19 points finished second below North Zone, who had already retained the championship with 23 points followed by West Zone with 17 points, East Zone 13 points and South Zone 8 points from five team league matches. In the morning today play was delayed by 45 minutes due to heavy fog and dew. South Zone resuming at the score of 204 for four with overnight pair Sriram (102) and Sunil Joshi, added 54 runs for the fifth wicket before Joshi was run out on a personal score of 45 runs through a direct hit by Yere Goud. Ashish Kapoor (1) was the next to go trapped leg before wicket when the scoreboard showed 280 for 7. After Kapoor’s exit, Srinath joined Sriram, and both played cautiously and made 45 runs for the eighth-wicket stand before Srinath was caught by Srivastava off a bowling of Narendra Hirwani on 30, which included five hits to the fence and one six in 38 balls. Hemang Badani in the complay of Sriram then raised their total to 337 for eight before Devendra Bundela shattered the South when he took the prize wicket of Sriram, having him caught by Amay Khurasia at 150 which came off 329 balls in 471 minutes. to lead MUMBAI, Feb 4 (PTI) — Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar is unlikely to lead the India-B team in the Challenger Trophy one-day cricket tournament to be held at Chennai from February 12 to 15. Selection committee chairman Chandu Borde told PTI over the telephone from Pune that Tendulkar had informed him that he was not keen on being India-B captain, during the Duleep Trophy match which the West Zone won comfortably under his (Tendulkar) captaincy. “He said he does not have the motivation and was not prepared to lead any side right now. I will convey his request to the other selectors and decide about it when we sit to pick the India-A side for the three-day match against Australia to be played at Nagpur from February 17 to 19,” he added. |
31 runs off an over CAPE TOWN, Feb 4 (Reuters) — South African Justin Kemp came up one big hit short of history when he struck in a domestic first-class match yesterday. Playing for Eastern Province against North West, the all-rounder hit the first five balls of an over from Morne Strydom for six, but saw a huge heave at the sixth bounce inside the boundary ropes. His first two sixes at the St George’s ground in Port Elizabeth were struck using the reverse sweep. His final strike was grabbed by a fielder and resulted in only one run. Kemp — who last month made both his Test and one-day debuts for South Africa — scored 188 as he and Mornantau Heyward shared a partnership of 70 for the tenth wicket off just 4.3 overs. Off-spinner Strydom bowled six overs in the innings, conceding 74 runs without taking a wicket. Only two players have hit six sixes in an over in first-class cricket. West Indian Gary Sobers achieved the feat playing for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan at Swansea in 1968, and Ravi Shastri also hit 36 runs off an over for Bombay against Baroda in the 1984/85 Ranji Trophy. Kemp joins Mike Proctor and Dennis Lindsay as the only South Africans to have hit five sixes in an over. |

Gopi Chand, Popat record wins JAIPUR, Feb 4 (UNI) — All the first eight seeds, including Olympian P. Gopi Chand and Aparna Popat, today recorded easy wins and marched into the third round of men’s and women’s singles in the 65th NTPC Senior National Badminton Championship here. In the men’s singles, there were, however, two surprising results as 36-year-old Maharashtra lad Madhur Tawade of Maharashtra stunned the 12th seeded Madhur Kalia in straight sets 7-15, 15-10, 15-6. The unseeded Delhi pair of Manju S. George and Krishna Hazarika caused the first upset in women’s doubles by outplaying fifth seeded pair of Parul Priyadarshani (Air India) and Divya Ramesh (BAI) 12-15, 15-6, 15-7 and stormed into the quarterfinals. In the second round of men’s singles, Gopi Chand took only 27 minutes in disposing of Ashish Chaddha of Delhi in straight sets 15-1, 15-0. Gopi Chand’s PSCB teammate and third seed Siddharth Jain also took no time in routing Sanjay Mishra of Madhya Pradesh 15-3, 15-2. Another PSCB lad Abhinn Shyam Gupta, the fourth seed, crushed G.M.S. Ranjan (Meghalaya) 15-0, 15-5. Gopi Chand now takes on junior national champion Nishad Dravid, who would represent the country at the Dutch and German Open this month and in March. Nishad was forced by Anup Mehrotra (UP) to struggle for three sets before going down 15-10, 8-15, 10-15. But the sub-junior national champion Rohan Castalino of Karnataka went down to Bahniman Bora of Assam in a 56-minute battle. Bora won 12-15, 15-8, 15-3 to enter the third round. Top seed Aparna Popat, world ranked 82nd, had a cake walk over Mala Gaba of Chandigarh 11-1,11-0 late last night. She will will now meet Barnali Raha of West Bengal in the third round, who prevailed over Delhi’s Gayatri Mendiratta 11-4,11-5. Second seeded Manjusha Kanwar, also of PSCB, had a walk over against Bihar’s Pratibha. She now takes on Amruta Banerjee of West Bengal in the third round. PSCB domination in women’s singles continued with its third seed P.V.V. Laxmi recording a one-sided victory over Kamini Shandil (HP) 11-1, 11-0 to set up a clash with Delhi’s Deepti Ranjan in the third round. Fourth seed B.R. Meenakshi trounced Vaishali Shirodkar of LIC 11-3, 11-1. Four ties were stretched to three sets in this round. In the first one such encounter, Fatima N. of Air India defeated Bibari Basumatary of Assam 11-1, 3-11, 11-4, and Oli Deka of Assam took a revenge when she got the better of Air India’s Shalini Prakash 11-5, 7-11, 11-7. In two other matches C.H. Deepti (PSCB) beat Kranti Sane (Mah) 5-11, 11-2, 13-10 and Amruta Banerjee (WB) beat Neha Makwana (MP) 10-13, 11-15, 13-12. |
Even contest between ITI, Kochin likely KOCHIN, Feb 4 (PTI) — An absorbing tussle for supremacy is on the cards when a confident FC Kochin take on ITI, Bangalore, in the fifth edition of the National Football League encounter at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium here tomorrow. “The unfortunate defeats my team had suffered in this edition had not weakened the morale of the players, but infact it had increased their confidence”, said an optimistic Mohammed Habeeb, coach of ITI and an Arjuna awardee and a former Indian striker. “Our aim is to win the full three points here. Team work is our strength” Habeeb added hoping the match would be a repetition of last year’s match at Thrissur in which ITI defeated FC Kochin 1-0. ITI have so far accumulated four points from four matches (1 win, 1 draw, 2 losses) and are in the seventh slot in the 12-team league while the Kochin outfit are in the second position with 10 points (3 win, 1 draw) from as many matches. On the other side, A.M. Sreedharan, coach of FC Kochin said “It would be a tight and even contest. We will not take lightly the telephonesmen. They are a good team. ITI had defeated East Bengal and fought well against Mohun Bagan in the earlier matches and that shows the team is in good form”. “Our aim is to accumulate maximum points from our home matches and try to win as many matches at the rivals grounds. We would go on the offensive from the start against ITI. Our aim is only a win with maximum margin”, said Sreedharan. ITI have five Indian internationals in their ranks goalkeeper Balaji Rao and former FC Kochin players K. Noushad, K.V. Dhanesh, Mohammed Shaffeq and A.S. Firoz. Besides, four foreign players — George Eke and Kennath Ogawa, both Nigerians, would be the strikers while Hamid Amoda and Majeed, both from Iraq would strengthen the midfield. The Kochin team’s luck revolves around mercurial I.M. Vijayan, who could not do much in this edition so far, but if he clicks here, then the ITI defence will have to work hard. Liberian Aaron Cole had impressed with his speedy run, but had to be more accurate. The return of attacking medio Rashidi to the Kochin team after his one match suspension for earning two yellow cards should boost the morale of the team as he had dished out a brilliant performance in their match against Churchill Brothers earlier, with his through and overhead crosses. The Kochin team defence looked healthy with Joe Paul Anchery and Dinesh V. Nair excelling in their tackling while custodian ‘all rounder’ Sunday Seah had come to their rescue in whichever role he came on to the field. Seah was at his best in their earlier match against Air-India, both as a goalkeeper and after half time took the role of an attacker, and proved to be a thorn in the rivals’ flesh. The match starts at 6 p m. MUMBAI: Buoyed by their impressive show against Indian Telephone Industries, local league champions Mahindra United will take on strong Mohun Bagan in the fifth edition of the National Football League at the Cooperage tomorrow. The solitary goal win over ITI has given a boost to jeepmen’s confidence and they would hope to play with same zeal against Rovers Cup champions Bagan. Though Mahindras will depend mainly on their striker Manjit Singh who scored the winning goal against ITI, their main strength is having a custodian like Virender Singh who rarely gives a chance to the opponents. Their captain Aqeel Ansari, foreign recruit Davoud Hosseini, experienced Khalid Siddique and Abhay Kumar will be helpful in the midfield. Bagan on the other had will be hoping to win the match by a huge margin as they are one of the best balanced sides. Their forward line reads names like Brazilian recruits Barreto and Santos while midfield consists of players like Ama Ganguly, Dulal Biswas and Naushad Pari. The Calcutta giants and equally good in defence which is spearheaded by captain Lolendro Singh and Bivash Ghosh. |
Divorce worst defeat: Becker BERLIN, Feb 4 (Reuters) — Boris Becker has described the much-publicised separation from his wife as the worst defeat he ever had to concede. ‘‘I have no problem in saying that I have lost a game because there’s always another one coming,’’ the three-times Wimbledon champion, who sealed a multi-million divorce from German-Amerian actress Barbara Feltus last month, told German weekly Der Spiegel. ‘‘I could never have imagined that I would go through a separation and that I could only see the two children and the wife whom I love every two or three weeks,’’ the former world number one said in a long interview released ahead of publication tomorrow. “That’s why I say that I have lost and it’s the biggest of all defeats.” “Yes, I am afraid,’’ he added. “I am afraid for my children because they have to go through a situation that neither their mother nor their father can control.’’ The German, who has been on the front page of the local newspapers almost daily for the past few weeks, faces another wave of media attention after allegations from a London-based Russian-born model that he is the father of her baby. “I don’t want to say anything on that for legal reasons,’’ said Becker, who underwent a paternity test in London to clear up the report. “There is an ongoing investigation and I will only say more once we have the result of the test,’’ he told Der Spiegel. After the baby story broke, Becker said he had talked about it with Barbara. “The weekend when the subject surfaced was not easy,’’ he said. “I had to explain the whole problem to Barbara. She reacted well. “She was informed from the start. We played an open game and the matter was not the reason for our separation.’’ More headlines followed after Becker confirmed last Monday that he had started a romance with rap singer Sabrina Setlur, who was once voted Germany’s “most erotic woman.’’ Becker, whose seven-year marriage with Feltus attracted constant media attention, admitted he had made mistakes. “My own attitude was not always 100 per cent correct,’’ he said. The 33-year-old, whose romance with Barbara started two years before they were married, said the two had enjoyed a happy marriage. “From the nine years that we spent together, we had seven of innocence. Those years were the happiest of my life. “For years there were no stories or rumours about us. We were a perfect team, from A to Z.’’ Barbara’s desire to focus on her own career and the pair’s lifestyle were some of the reasons behind the separation, he said. “Our house was always full, party here and party there,’’ he said. “what had made us so strong got lost, more and more. Suddenly there were people between us. I don’t want to have anybody between me an my wife.’’ Becker, who burst into the limelight by winning Wimbledon as a 17-year-old in 1985 and retired from competitive tennis in 1999, said he looked back with nostalgia to the time when he could concentrate on hitting the ball. “I can think about times when life was a lot simpler than it is today,’’ he said. He said the overwhelming domination of American rival Pete Sampras was the main reason why he had stopped playing. “I knew I would never be the number one again,’’ he said. “Even if I would play at my best, Pete Sampras would still be better. So why go on?’’ |
India retain SAARC
golf crown NEW DELHI, Feb 4 — India retained SAARC Golf Championship title when they beat their bugbear Sri Lanka to make it three-in-a-row at the Delhi Golf Club course here today. Ashok Kumar held his nerves to card a scintillating victory on the first play-off hole against Anura Rohana of Lanka after the two players ended in a tie after 18 holes at the par-72 course. In the other two play-off contests, Lalith Kumara of Lanka beat Sheeraz Kalra of India 2 and 1 while Rahil Gangjee of India beat Tissa Chandradasa of Lanka 3 and 2. The play-off began on the first hole with Rohana taking the honour on the tee. Selecting a driver to get off the tee proved to be the Lankan’s waterloo, with the ball finding its way into a right bush half-way down the fairway. Taking a leaf out of the Lankan’s predicament, Ashok settled for a three-iron tee shot.
Rohana, forced to take a penalty drop, landed in further trouble as his three-wood second shot placed his ball directly behind a rock on the edge of a path on the right of the green. Using the head of his putter to get out of trouble after a lot of deliberation and impediment
clering, Rohana proceeded to score a seven on the par-5 hole. He then conceded the hole to Ashok who was 10 feet from the pin after reaching the green in three shots. In the day’s first tie, Lalitha Kumara took early command with birdies on the first and fourth, placing him at two-up at that stage. The second match was completely dominated by Indian Rahil
Gangjee, known in golfing circles as a match-play expert, and started the day by winning the first three holes with two birdies sandwiching a par on the second. |
