A memorable day for teachers
Dehradun, September 5 The compeers for the day, Siddharth, Gauri and Aditi, led the proceedings with infectious gusto and kept things interesting by bestowing befitting titles on various teachers. A medley of popular Hindi songs dedicated to specific teachers was presented by the students, which was greatly appreciated and very well received by the teachers and students alike. The band set the stage on fire with melodious numbers like ''Somebody That I Used To Know'' and ''One Last Breath.''. Next up was the English play which left everyone in splits, provoking laughter among all present. The Bollywood dance was highly entertaining and brought the audience to its feet. The most awaited event, the presentation, was rightly the best part of the function, hilarious and at the same time providing an insight into the minds of the teachers .Principal Bro. George commended the teachers for their hard work and dedication, calling teaching the noblest profession of all. Then the alumni took charge of the programme and conducted exciting games for the teachers to take part in. A tagline quiz was conducted which saw teachers scratching their heads trying to remember the answers. Another interesting game saw the teachers searching for an ensemble of things like religious books, a mobie having Honey Singh's songs etc. in their purses The programme concluded with a lunch organised by the alumni as well as the students. The ultimate joy was further enhanced when Bro. George announced that S.J.A.had been awarded the best day school in Uttarakhand for the third consecutive year by Education World, a human development magazine. Students, teachers reverse roles at Ecole Globale
Teacher's Day was celebrated at Ecole Globale International Girls School here today. The theme of the programme was ‘Halloween’. The programme began with a special assembly, wherein students and teachers reversed roles. The assembly generally conducted by students was now conducted by teachers. It wasn’t very difficult for students to become teachers but it was side-splitting, indeed, to see teachers as students. The first performance was an introduction of teachers to 'Hallo-eachers' (halloween+teachers). This was followed by a dance performance by junior school girls. A quiz was also organised with only students'-based questions. Deepa Chhetri and Navita Malhotra were declared best dressed teachers. The highlight of the show was the last performance by versatile girls of grade XII. The show ended with teachers yelling “three cheers for our students”.

Students take pledge to lead path of truth
Haridwar, September 5 At Parmarth Gurukul,Swargashram ,Pauri Garhwal, young Gurukulites observed the day as ''pledge day,'' taking a pledge to follow the five principles of ''panchsheel'' philosophy. At Shri Devi Sampad Adhyatm Sanskrit Mahavidyalya the day was also observed as Sanskrit Day, with Sanskrit scholars vowing to imbibe the traits of the language and Vedic scriptures written in the ''mother of all languages'' with sincerity. At the Vidyarthi Auditorium of Parmarth Gurukul, students sought blessings from teachers by touching their feet. Then they took the pledge to lead the path of non-violence, truth and compassion. Students also spoke their thoughts about teacher-student relationship and the need to revive the ancient Indian Gurukul system of education. Orators stressed on the need of restoring the profession's lost glory which has turned education into a professional sector merely. Academician Ankit Sharma said that today teaching had become money -making profession, while it should have been a ''man-making''profession. He said that with the vast experience of the teachers and the knowledge they possess, they can make students turn from petals to blooming trees. Parmarth Niketan office-bearer Ram Mahesh Mishra said that soon a Sanskrit-based workshop will be organised at the Shri Devi Sampad Adhyatm Sanskrit Maha Vidyalaya to propagate the Sanskrit language. Girls come out in large numbers to cast votes
Dehradun, September 4 They seemed quite passionate towards college elections and exercising their voting right, contrary to the general perception about the youngsters' less keenness in the students' union elections. “I am very excited being a fresher and I would be voting for the first time in college elections. I will vote for the group, which has a better vision for the college and for the students,” Nidhi, 1st year B.Com student, told The Tribune. Another reason for the fervour among the girls could be that for the first time a girl student is fighting for the post of president this year. Swati Negi, an Independent candidate, is giving student organisations like ABVP and NSUI run for their money. “The college students union elections are always symbolised with muscle power but it must not be forgotten that almost half of the strength in the college is of girls and without their support no candidate can think of winning,” said Parul, last year's B.Sc student. It has been observed that in previous elections that generally, girls avoided coming to college on the polling day due to the fear of brawls or untoward incidents. But this year, girls came out with full enthusiasm and voted in the elections. |
Low turnout in DAV students’ union poll; counting today
Dehradun, September 5 “Though the voting percentage has decreased this year, the number of votes has increased due to a record number of 24,000 admissions this academic session. Around 7,000 students took admission last year,” Prof Gopal Chetri told The Tribune. Amid a heavy police presence in and around the college campus, hundreds of students started queuing up at the polling booths at 9 am to cast their votes in favour of their favorite student leaders. The voting ended at 2 pm. The shops in the Karanpur area remained closed till the evening in the wake of the election. “The polling went off peacefully. No untoward incident was reported during the voting as the police had made elaborate security arrangements,” SP, City, Jagdish Chandra told The Tribune. However, the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations were violated openly as printed posters of candidates were distributed and pasted on walls indiscriminately. The post of president is likely to see a three-cornered contest between Siddharth Rana of the ABVP, Bhupendra Negi of the NSUI and Swati Negi, an Independent candidate. The ABVP has held the post of president for the last six years. Meanwhile, the fight for the post of general secretary is also multi-cornered this time. Proxy groups like the Pattu Group, the Aryan Group and the Satyam Group, all supported by one or the other major students’ union, are also confident of winning the election. In all, 28 candidates are in the fray for different posts of the students’ union for the academic year 2013-14. The counting of votes will take place tomorrow. It will start at 9 am and the results are expected to be declared in the afternoon. The police has made tight security arrangements. It is to be noted that incidents of brawl between different students’ groups had taken place on the day of counting in the past. “We have checked the layout plan for the counting and the force deployment will be done accordingly. The present security arrangement will continue till the counting ends,” said the SP. |
Choked drains, nullahs being broadened in Haridwar
Haridwar September 5 Corporation chairman Manoj Garg has directed the broadening of drains and nullahs to give relief to the residents from regular choking and blocking of sewers by rainwater. The drive has been initiated in first phase in the suburban Jwalapur area markets. At Kathaira bazaar, Chowk market and Gurudwara road, the civic body has started broadening the drains. Slabs are being removed to pave the way for expansion work and local residents and traders are being urged to cooperate in this drive. As at many places, due to encroachments, drains cannot be cleaned because of the concrete structure built by traders. Garg has asked the traders to remove these slabs. Garg said these slabs were being replaced by iron wired slabs, which are easy to remove when drains get choked, thereby facilitating in the cleaning of the choked drains on a regular basis. Initially, some traders resented this move, but when Mayor Manoj Garg and Ranipur-BHEL legislator Aadesh Chauhan personally convinced them, the traders agreed. Ward number 23 councillor Imran Mansuri is also coordinating with the civic authorities and local people, to make sure all such drains get cleaned and expanded. Mansuri said this would ultimately benefit the residents as for past few years, every time it rains, these drains used to get choked, submerging the nearby markets and colonies. Former councillor Jitendra Chauhan said this was a result of the elevation of the civic body from a municipal committee to Municipal Corporation as now there were more funds to carry out such drives and local people should cooperate with the civic body in this regard. Some traders have opposed to the usage of JCB machines for removing the concrete slabs as they say that these machines have an impact on adjacent structures and, instead, manual digging should be done. |
