Residents want stadium to be named after hockey wizard Dhyan Chand
Haridwar, August 29 The new stadium, which is scheduled to be opened for local public and sportspersons probably by next month, has been built in the heart of the city at Devpura. Today, sport lovers under the aegis of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal demanded naming of this sport stadium after hockey wizard Major Dhyan
Chand by submitting a memorandum in this regard to Haridwar Development Authority. Incidentally, today is the 109th birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, celebrated countrywide as National Sports Day. Led by UKD central secretary Uday Ram Semwal, the delegation referred to the high stature of Major Dhyan Chand in the field of hockey, which is
India’s national game. Semwal said that by naming this new stadium after Dhyan Chand, it will only add to the national media exposure and also boost prospects of hockey in Uttarakhand. “In 1920-30 Major Dhyan Chand had played on the soil of Haridwar on banks of the holy
Ganga. It is a matter of pride for us and so we want the new stadium to be named after him. He is undoubtedly the greatest hockey player ever till date,” said Uday Ram, while apprising HDA vice chief Ranjit Sinha about their demand. While youth wing leader Lalit Mamgain said that on the lines of the National Stadium at New Delhi, named after Major Dhyan Chand, the Devpura-based stadium should also be named after him, which will be a proud moment for hockey lovers of
the city. Veteran social activist Anil Pokhriyal cited the immense contribution of Dhyan Chand, popularly known as ‘Dada.’ “Dhyan Chand won three consecutive
gold medals in Olympics, scoring a record of 33 goals in them. He was offered the post of Colonel by Adolf Hitler in 1936. The dictator was awestruck by his sheer mastery of hockey. Australian great Sir Donald Bradman called Dhyan Chand as the greatest hockey player owing to his prolific goal scoring.
During a match in Holland, his hockey stick was broken by his opponents who suspected that his hockey stick may have a magnet in it owing to his deftness in dribbling,”
said Pokhriyal. The great hockey player was paid tributes by UKD activists on his birth anniversary. They included Kamleshwar Nautiyal, Rajendra Bhatt, Vijay Mamgain, Manoj and Satya Prakash Bhatt. |
‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ film actor visits alma mater
Mussoorie, August 29 Nawab’s visit came was a pleasant surprise for the students who gathered around him and bombarded him with questions related to the tinsel world. Nawab had studied in class IX in Wynberg Allen School in 1989. Thereafter, he left for Mumbai but the school teachers still recognised him as a good athlete. Teachers of the school, namely Champa and Kurian Arackal, who played an important role in Nawab’s formative years, said they were pleased to meet the actor and see him succeed in his film career. Nawab was pleased to see that the school was still going strong in its 125th year. He told the students that he became interested in acting at the school and participated in dramas keenly. This was the first time that he was visiting Wynberg-Allen after he left Mussoorie in1989. He has been reminded of games, punishments, dormitories and fun he had in classrooms and especially the unforgettable Mussoorie Olympics. He said it was at the Inter-School Olympics during his stint in the school that he learnt about skills of athletics. This came handy while playing the role of a coach in “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”. He thanked the school for imparting quality education during his growing years. The students from the editorial board of the school interacted with him and posed several questions to him about the film world in Mumbai and pursuing the career as an actor. Nawab motivated the students to choose only that career which interests them. “Those of who want to become actors should continue in your field of interest, i.e. acting, and those who don’t want to be actors, don’t change your mind,” he added. The actor expressed his regret on not being able to make it to the 125 years’ celebrations of the school scheduled to be held in a few months. Later, Nawab told The Tribune that he had played several shady characters, namely in film “Don2”, but the role in “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” based on the life of ace Indian athlete of yesteryear Milkha Singh was different. Nawab entered Bollywood through roles in television serials. He made his debut in films by acting in “Raja Ko Rani Se Pyar Ho Gaya” in 2000. He was signed to play a criminal in Salman
Khan’s “Bodyguard”. |

Minors lodged in jails in violation of juvenile Act
Dehradun, August 29 During the inspection undertaken by Ajay Setia, Chairman of State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), and PK Mani, Civil Judge of Suddhowala jail on August 24, a male inmate
who had already been convicted claimed that he was below 18 years but the police wrote his age as
20 years. ''Similarly a female lodged in the women's jail and facing trial claimed that she was 17 years of age but was not being treated as a minor. We found the age of most of the inmates below the age of 21 inspected by us doubtful,'' said Ajay
Setia, Chairman of SCPCR. Among the incarcerated minors are two girls who have been lodged in the female jail at Suddhowala. Similarly during his visit to a jail in Pauri today, around four inmates claimed that they were below the age
of 18 years. ''We will be recommending to the State Legal Service Authority to submit documentary proof of the age of the inmates and also carry a verification drive so that the children could be segregated,'' said Setia. The inspection was carried at the behest of State Legal Service Authority headed by the Chief Justice of the High Court. The police often arrest juvenile delinquents ignoring documentary proof of their age put forward by their families. The children are sent to juvenile homes only after the fact of their age is established, which could take several months. ''The period that they serve in jail can often leads them astray and damages their psyche,'' said Dr Pratibha Sharma, psychologist, Doon Hospital.
The courts in previous instances have ruled lodging delinquents who are prima facie juveniles amounted to violation of their right to life and liberty and also human rights. |
