According to the police, the girl had been claiming that on Wednesday morning, she left her house with Manoj and they both went to Chandigarh, where they allegedly got married in a temple and stayed there at the house of Manoj’s relative. Today, when they were coming back to Dehradun, the police caught them at the ISBT.

It is to be noted that the girl’s mother, Neetu Valmiki, who is also the BJP councillor from Rishinagar, filed an FIR against Manoj and his five friends for kidnapping her daughter from the house on Wednesday morning. Swami Sanand to continue ‘tapasya’ to save Ganga
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, August 23
Renowned environmentalist Professor Guru Das Aggarwal alias Swami Sanand, has reiterated his commitment of saving holy Ganga and made it clear that his "tapasya" mode of agitation was still continuing.

Swami Sanand said despite administrative tactics and pressure, he did not let his "tapasya" get affected. Though he was forcibly sent to All-India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIMS) and Dehradun-based hospital on the name of health check up.

Citing the medical report of AIIMS, Swami Shivanand, founder of Matra Sadan, said the very base of the district administration that the health of Swami Sanand deteriorated fell flat as the premier institute said the saint has no health problem and is normal.

"The district administration and the local politicians have a nexus with the illegal quarrying mafia in Haridwar. They earlier killed Swami Nigamanand after he was on a 108-day hunger strike. Now, they want to harm Swami Sanand as their business interests are being affected due to the agitation," said Shivanand.

Swami Shivanand also alleged a mental torture on Swami Sanand, after he was taken forcibly from ashram on August 1 by police on the name of health check up at AIIMS in Delhi.

The saint said Sanand was put up for four hours at the police station. He was also put up at Roshanabad with criminals, only to pressurise him to give up his agitation.

"It is a blot on the state government working. The saint is fighting for the social cause, but the politicians and the influential criminals get high class guest treatment in jails," said Shivanand.

Matra Sadan ashram also pointed out that they were against numerous hydro-electric projects in sensitive zones of Uttarakhand. The Supreme Court also fears now that the projects have impacted the natural ecology. The Supreme Court has also put a brake on all such projects, till a final assessment report was submitted to it by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.

"We had staged an agitation against such rampant hydro-electric projects which were without environment clearance and only meant to extract money. The natural fury in June had exposed the flaw of making hill state a "Urja Pradesh". The maximum damage is on the eco sensitive zone from Gangotri-Gaumukh till Uttarkashi-Rudraprayag belt, added Shivanand.

Ban sought on controversial album ‘Bum Baggad’
Album shows locals in poor light
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, August 23
While on the one hand the people of the state have still not recovered from the June 16-17 natural tragedy, a private audio-video compact disc depicting the catastrophe has come under ire from local residents.

The album wrongly depicts the local people of the state in poor light showing them not helping the outside pilgrims who were stuck during the flash flood. In reality, the local inhabitants of the hill region, had offered food, shelter and relief to the pilgrims from outside, with many getting out of stock of their own stored ration. Teerth purohits, saints, traders and people from different communities have demanded a ban on the cassette.

Traders today crushed dozens of VCDs and DVDs of the controversial album 'Bum Baggad' marketed by Shubham Audio Video Ltd.

Teerth Raksha Samiti chief Sanjay Chopra demanded an instant ban and registration of a case of defamation against the album producers, for trying to depict the tragedy in a shoddy manner.

He said still hundreds of villagers in the affected regions of the state are living in dire strait, waiting for relief aid, the album makers fail to see and project this aspect.

“Many a villages got out of their reserved stock of months as they opened it for outside pilgrims stuck in the Kedar Valley, Badrinath Temple area and Hem Kund Sahib.

Whole of the country appreciated and lauded the gesture of the local hill residents. But this is a very disgraceful act by album producers and makers of showing the wrong aspect in the album which they term as depiction of tragedy” said Chopra.

Punjabi Sabha representative Rajesh Khurana said the video company wants to take commercial leverage out of the June tragedy, which should be condemned in harsh words.

Khurana demanded filing of a case against the offenders from state government side and ban the stock of the album from future sale immediately, as this hurts the sentiments of the people of the state.

Noted Uttarakhand folk singer, Sangeeta Dhaundiyal ,has also expressed her resentment over the wrong depiction of local people in the album.

Singer said album producers should first have asked the 1 lakh 80 thousand odd people rescued from the affected areas of the state and about the support given to them by the locals.

Then they will come to know about the reality, in what hardships, these people live and still they offered shelter and ration to the outside pilgrims who were evacuated via helicopters but those native residents are still there in disaster-affected areas, said Dhaundiyal.

College students corner principal on admissions
Tribune News Service

Mussoorie, August 23
The members of MPG college students' union, angry at the college administration for not taking the students' union in confidence while determining the admission date for the BA second and third year courses, cornered the principal at his office today.

The students alleged that the college administration did not consult them while deciding the last date for the admission for the BA second and third year courses and had arbitrarily announced August 24 as the last date, which is posing problem for the students interested in taking admissions in the college.

The president of the students' union, Anit Kumar, angry at this decision of the college administration cornered the principal in the office and demanded to extend the admission date so that the students who are yet to receive their marksheet can apply and are not left out of the process.

He also said that college administration did not bother to even consult the student union after taking their views and took the decision on their own.

He also demanded that the last date for admission should be extended further as many students, living in far-flung villages, are able to take admission in the college. Later, a minor scuffle also broke out between two factions of the students over the issue of admissions as both sides wanted students to be admitted in the college. One group stressed that only those students should be given admission who were present at the time physically.

The scuffle is being scene as a tussle for elections as both groups are involved in getting their supporters enrolled in the college for the electoral gain in the students' union elections. The two warring groups were pacified by some leaders, thus calming down the sentiments and avoiding any untoward incident here.

The Principal of the college, Sudhir Gairola, speaking to the media informed that August 24 had been decided as the last date of admissions according to the university norms and no admissions will be considered after that.

The date for elections will be announced following that after consultation with all concerned sides, he added.

Motivating speech by Gen Manvendra to future officers
Tribune News service

Dehradun, August 23
They say a man can never forget his roots, no matter how high he goes. It holds good for Lt Gen Manvendra Singh, AVSM, VSM and Commandant, IMA, who visited his alma mater, Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), on Friday in an effort to address and motivate the future officers of the defence forces.

He spoke about the challenges being faced by Rimcollians in the services and how it is important for them to build their basics at the college. He also highlighted various qualities required to succeed as an officer in the Indian Army.

According to him, having morals, ethics and values is the prime aim of any officer, and they must strive to achieve high standards of it.

He shared a few incidents from his career, which shaped him into a better officer. One was about an NCO of the Army that he met, while on a visit to Clement Town.

He asked the NCO as to what he looked for when he saw an officer in his battalion. Quite unfazed by his rank, the NCO replied:''Saab, Saab, ek officer ki tarah dikhne chaheye, wo apne kaam mein kabil hona chaheye, unhe mushkilon se nahi darnah chaheye aur unhe kabhi bhi jhuut nahi bolana chaheye. (Sir, the officer should look like an officer, must be competent in his job, should never be scared in times of difficulties and he must never lie).''

He was so moved by the reply that he cancelled his visit to Germany and the US where he was to observe as to how they trained their officers, for he believed that the NCO had told him everything that was required as an officer.

Quoting this incident, he told the cadets about the importance of being truthful to the point bluntness in life.

The talk was an enriching experience for the cadets and they learnt a lot about the requirements to be an officer, apart from being physically fit and academically sound.

Col HS Bainsla, SM, Commandant RIMC, thanked Lt Gen Manvendra Singh for sparing his valuable time and coming to address the cadets.
