FRI research scholar commits suicide
Dehradun, September 1 The hostel staff got alert and informed the police only after they found that the body of the 26-year-old research scholar, Manisha Rana, hailing from Chandigarh, had started emitting foul smell. After unlocking her room, her body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her hostel room where she was living for the past couple
of months. A suicide note, purportedly written by the research scholar, was recovered from the spot, which, according to police sources, has not held anyone responsible for her death, though she has said ‘sorry’ to her parents
and brother for the extreme step in the note. Meanwhile, the deceased’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination, which confirmed that she died
of hanging. Reportedly, both Manisha and her husband, Rajendra Rana, have been associated with the FRI as research scholars. Manisha was pursuing her PhD. Manisha and Rajendra were married three years back and were witnessing a sour relationship for the past many months, claim police sources. It may be noted that Manisha’s husband, Rajendra Rana, hails from Dehradun and has an accommodation at Balawala, but Manisha preferred to stay in the transit hostel accommodation of the FRI instead of staying with her husband at their place in Balawala. SP City, Jadish Chandra, said, “It looks to be a suicide case after the recovery of the note. Though she has not named anybody in the suicide note, still we will investigate the causes behind
her suicide.” A police officer, requesting anonymity, confirmed that her husband has told the police that things were not going well between them on some issues, but nothing extraordinarily happened in the last couple of days that could have prompted her to take such an extreme step. Police sources said that Manisha and Rajendra had arguments over the ownership of his parental house
at Balawala. |
Students’ Poll 2013
Dehradun, September 1 After a complaint of manhandling filed by a woman against two ABVP leaders, Manesh Jagudi and Siddharth Rana, at the Nehru Colony police station, the ABVP has accused the NSUI of
pressuring the police into booking the leaders. According to the ABVP, the police was under pressure and registered a “false” case against
the present president of the DAV (PG) students’ union, Mahesh Jagudi, and Siddharth Rana, who is ABVP’s candidate for the president post for the coming elections in
the college. Rani Vohra, a resident of Mathorawala, had accused unidentified persons of manhandling her a
month ago. The police at that time did not take any action on the matter, but on August
28, it registered a complaint against both ABVP leaders in the same case. Today, the ABVP released a letter signed by neighbours of Rani Vohra, alleging that Rani carries a bad image in the locality and does not share cordial relationship with anybody.
The letter also alleged that Rani had a habit of fighting with everybody and even fights with her landlords who had been asking her to leave their place. Madhusudhan Joshi, in charge of the administrative affairs of the NSUI, said, “The police haswrongly implicated our leaders. They have
nothing to do with that matter and today residents of Mathorawala met the SSP and told him that Mahesh Jagudi and Siddharth Rana never came there and manhandled her.” The ABVP is claiming that by implicating its leaders, the NSUI wants to take mileage in the students’ elections scheduled to be held on September 5

Therefore, taking into consideration his service to the region, a massive welcome gate will be installed near Malsi Deer Park so that people can remember his contribution for a long time to come. Speaking on the opposition to the Chief Minister visit on September 2, the day when six persons were martyred during the statehood agitation in Mussoorie, 19 years ago, the MLA said that it was really unfortunate that the governments had failed in identifying the agitators as yet but opposing the Chief Minister on the day of paying homage was uncalled for. NGO holds painting exercise at Gandhi Park
Dehradun, September 1 Activists of the MAD, who have been particularly active on the environmental front in the city ever since the group's formation in June 2011, had planned this activity so as to connect with the Doonites on the burning issue of environmental degradation. “We have conducted over 80 clean up drives, but people only appreciate our resolve and are reluctant to join in. So we thought of spreading the same message through a different channel, which was by holding an open-for-all painting exercise at Gandhi Park,” explains Saumya Agarwal, a school student and a young MAD volunteer. These paintings will be handed over to Anil Joshi, a Padmashree awardee, whose organisation HESCO has promised to put these up at various places on their campus. MAD volunteers made the necessary arrangements at Gandhi Park for the drive. “As soon as the painting started, we had an army of onlookers who stood beside us and did nothing except staring and watching, just like they do when we conduct the clean-up drives. But the difference was that while everyone runs away when we ask them to help for the clean-ups, few people did come forward today to contribute with a stroke or two,” narrates Abhishek Rana, a maddian and an activist. The group appeals to all Doonites to join in as per their own levels of commitment and convenience. Those present in the activity were Kashika, Arnav, Vidhushi, Reeta, Shardul, Vishwas, Soumya, Manzar and Abhinav. |
