Pithoragarh, June 11
The drinking water problem in Uttarakhand will be solved in four years as World Bank has approved a scheme of Rs 2,200 crore sent by the government for the recharge of 382 dried natural water sources in the state.

Mantri Prasad Naithani, state Drinking Water Minister, stated this at Almora today. The minister, who reached Almora for a private religious function, was talking to mediapersons after taking a meeting of officers at the district headquarters. “We have prioritised districts for drinking water and are giving them priority in chalking out drinking water projects in future,” he said.

Naithani said Almora, Pauri, Tehri and Pithoragarh districts were facing drinking water shortage. “There are several natural sources which are flowing without their water being used in these districts. We want to tap this idle flowing water and use it for drinking purposes in the areas facing water shortage,” he said.

Naithani, who inspected the lifting water schemes of the district, said his department had identified 123 lift water schemes in the state for renovation and a budget had been approved for 52 schemes for the purpose.

The minister said the state government had started renovating natural water sources and the Jal Nigam and the Jal Sansthan had been entrusted with the responsibility with a provision of a separate budget for the work.

Ex-servicemen want hike withdrawn on liquor
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, June 11
Brig KG Behl (retd), patron of the Dehradun Ex-Servicemen's League, has demanded that the state government should withdraw the hike in excise duty on liquor in the state. In a statement issued here today, Behl said recently the state government had removed 20 per cent VAT from the cost of liquor for civilians to make it cheaper, though in the process the government has imposed more excise duty to earn bigger revenue by making the liquor cheaper.

He said the government had given the excuse that it had been done to stop smuggling of liquor from the adjoining states where it was cheaper. But by increasing excise duty all over, it had resulted in the increase in the price of liquor being sold to defence personnel through the CSD.

He said the cost of liquor in the CSD had become very high and had badly affected the budget of the ex-servicemen. “The government is requested to immediately withdraw the increase over the liquor being sold through the CSD. The Chief Minister is requested to intervene personally to avoid this extra burden,” he said.

It may be pointed out here that basically the state government resorted to the increase to stop smuggling of liquor where it was cheaper in the adjoining states and costlier here, but by introducing higher excise duty on liquor in the CSD, they had made liquor much more costlier in the state, which would again give a fillip to smuggling from there and the very purpose for which it was introduced gets defeated. “On the contrary, the govt has made liquor cheaper in the market, thereby asking people to drink more, which women all over the state are opposing,'' he added.

Harish Dhami agrees to set up polytechnic at Dharchula
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, June 11
The Uttarakhand government today yielded to the pressure exerted by the maverick MLA from Dharchula Harish Dhami and announced the setting up a polytechnic at Dharchula.

Since the last two days the Cabinet minister Dinesh Agarwal had been holding discussions with the MLA. ''I am also minister in charge of the Pithorgarh and Almora districts and I am keen to solve the MLA's problems,'' said Agarwal.

The MLA has been long pressing for the fulfilment of demands and had even taken on the Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna for keeping his area behind in the matter of development. ''I have been told that the government is in the process of issuing an order but for me this is of no significance. The government has not taken up my demand to accord my constituency Dharchula the status of backward area and also demarcate the Ascot Deer Sanctuary,'' he said.

Further the MLA said that he will continue to struggle for the people of his state and ensure that the area is given it's due. ''I am not hankering after the poor. I want my people and my area to become part and parcel of the development process,'' he said.
