33 Doon schools fail to get fresh recognition
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, June 1
Eight minority schools and 25 non-minority schools in Dehradun have failed to obtain fresh recognition, as mandated under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, despite instructions from the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. These schools were asked to fill the renewal forms and submit them by May 30.

"The minority schools said they have been exempted from the exercise after the assurance given by the Chief Minister. However, I have asked the Chief Education Officer to ensure that instructions are issued to these schools," said Ajay Setia, Chairman of the commission.

Besides, the commission has taken a strong exception to the list being provided by the Department of School Education regarding the number of unaided schools in Uttarakhand that are RTE-compliant.

"The strength of unaided schools has reduced in 10 districts of the state, while in three districts it has increased from the last year. In 2012-2013, the number of unaided schools were shown to be 5,134, but the number has decreased to 3,825 this year. In Dehradun district, the total number of unaided schools were 1,040 in 2012-2013 but in 2013-2014 the number stands at 753," said Setia.

Founder’s day of Oak Grove School
Parents, ex-students not happy with the arrangements
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, June 1
The 125th anniversary celebrations of Oak Grove School were marred with chaotic scenes after the completion of the function at the school grounds, popularly known as Valley, today.

The parents who had been waiting for the start of the evening programme from 4.00 pm had to wait till 6.30 pm. Some parents lamented the delay and alleged that they were kept waiting in the heat and hunger at the school auditorium for more than two hours. When questioned, the school staff said the inspection of science exhibition at junior and boys’ school by the chief guest led to the delay. Barring that, the whole programme went off well, they added.

The ex-students were also livid at the sordid arrangements made for them and termed the whole event a damp squib. The alumni from 1970 batch, namely Lalit Naayar, Anoopa Prasad and Sanjeev Rishi, were of the view that the arrangements made were scaled down in comparison to the centenary celebrations. The centenary year was a grand event with the then Minster of Railways, late Madhavrao Scindia, gracing the occasion. But today on the 125th anniversary, the function was inaugurated by the Chief Personnel Officer, which was uncalled for, they added.

Sanjeev Rishi further said the school was a jewel in the crown of Northern Railways but all was not well here. He said the school principal should be a well-qualified educationist, selected through the UPSC, instead of a railways official who comes for only three years and is non-committal towards the well being of the school, leading to lowering of the education standards in the school.

He demanded that former students should also be included in the governing body of the school on honorary basis as they were emotionally attached with the betterment of the school and could contribute in many ways for the future of the school.

DUCASS demands start of MPhil (economics) course
Doon University had scrapped it after advertising in the newspapers
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, June 1
The Doon University Chhatra Adhikaar Sangharsh Samiti (DUCASS) has strongly criticised the Doon University for scrapping the Mphil in economics pogramme for 2013, after advertising for 10 seats in the newspapers.

The members of the DUCASS said after the students had bought the prospectus, it was announced that the University would not run the programme due to absence of faculty.

“As no other educational institution offers regular MPhil degree in economics with inter-disciplinary approach in Dehradun, the decision was widely welcomed by the social science students. Launching of this new program was duly notified in newspaper advertisements, official website and printed in the prospectus,” said Barkha Mathur, vice-president, DUCASS.

The members of the student body said according to the UGC guidelines, the preparations for starting a new course are started a year in advance and as such the University’s decision to scrap the course at the last minute was arbitrary and not in the interest of the students.

“The adamant attitude of the present Vice-Chancellor and his administration was not in the interest of the University. Except the current Head of the Department, all other faculty members in the department of economics are enthusiastic to run the course,” said the office-bearer of DUCASS.
