Tribune Impact The structures are situated in Landour Bazaar of Mussoorie Residents in other areas seek similar relaxation of rules Ajay Ramola
Mussoorie, May 31 The state government has directed the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority to relax the guidelines, thus paving the way for the reconstruction of around 150 dilapidated buildings situated at Landour Bazaar in Mussoorie. The residents of the area have welcomed the move and said that they had been waiting for this day since the past several years as they were living in the grip of fear of these buildings collapsing any moment. “Now we can rebuild our buildings after this government order without any hindrance,” said Ravinder, a resident of Landour Bazaar. The local ward member, Beena Panwar, has also thanked the government for acceding to the genuine demand of the residents and this order will not only save lives of many but also give Landour Bazaar a pleasing look. Otherwise it looks like a haunted territory. The Executive Engineer of Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority, Shyam Mohan Sharma, has also said that MDDA had received directions from the government to grant relaxation to the owners of dilapidated buildings at Landour Bazaar and now people concerned should come up and benefit from the GO passed by the state government. However, this relaxation has been provided for only 150 dilapidated buildings at Landour Bazaar and not other buildings in the town, much to the ire of the residents who do not fall in it's ambit but have buildings in shattered condition here. Rajeev, one of the residents who also has a dilapidated building in Camel's Back Road, said that the other buildings, also in similar condition, should be provided same relaxation as they were living under dangerous circumstances with fear of their buildings caving in at any given moment. Many residents are planning to move court for ''dual standards'' being adopted towards their buildings by the state government. The Tribune had highlighted the issue of dilapidated buildings, extensively citing the Disaster Management and Mitigation Centre report in which it was clearly revealed that around 600 buildings were vulnerable to even the mildest earthquake. Of the surveyed structures, the oldest building was constructed around 1836. |

Recalling their expedition, the sisters disclosed that they spent nearly an hour at the summit. ''After reaching the summit, we unfurled the National Flag and experienced a sense of pride in doing so,'' said Nungshi. ''Being on top of the world was certainly an experience that cannot be expressed in words,'' Tashi added. The twin sisters were all praise for their Pakistani colleague Shamina Beg. Shamina, too, conquered Mount Everest along with the twin sisters. ''Certainly we found a new friend in Shamina. She all along the expedition was very cordial and friendly,'' said Tashi, who hopes that their friendship with Shamina will go long way in bringing two nations together.
