Maddians clean Tamsa stream of garbage
Residents appreciate as they rid the stream of 1,000-kg garbage
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 26
For the second consecutive Sunday today, volunteers of 'Making A Difference By Being the Difference (MAD)', a voluntary group of youngsters, and 'Greenathon- Teens for Green' were back at the Tapkeshwar stream to clean the Tamsa river stream of garbage. The voluntary group has been in the forefront to make Dehradun clean and green.

Maddians, as the MAD volunteers loved to be called, who had lifted 500 kg of garbage on May 19th were back at the sacred Tapkeshwar temple to continue the good work. More than 70 volunteers who had responded to MAD’s call on the weekend morning, left satisfied that their efforts had rid the stream of 1,000 kg of garbage. But the disappointment they wore on their faces was also profound. Despite the hectic efforts which led to the Tamsa stream becoming free-flowing and devoid of 500 killograms of waste on May 19, the devotees had learnt no lesson. They were back to their ways and what greeted Maddians was an even bigger sea of garbage at the river bank.

“We are children at the end of the day,” said a MAD volunteer, Sudhanshu. “We have no authority to fine. Our clean-up drives aim not only to literally clean up the affected area but also to purge the thought process within….to start a chain of thorough soul-searching so that the mantra of “NOT to pollute” comes from within and not from without,” he added.

It was no usual clean-up drive. Maddians were flanked by not just their regular members and volunteers, but also by youth from Graphic Era Hill University and boarders of Summer Valley School. Brightlands, Pine Hall, Seven Oaks and DBS college students were also the key movers and shakers of the campaign. Some of the youths were first-timers who had learnt about the MAD effeorts through the media or social networking sites.

The way the activity was conducted was also different. All 70 volunteers were first briefed and then divided into three groups. One for the literal clean-up, one for the mental clean-up (ie. persuading the devotees) and the last one for putting up pleas near the river bed, urging the people not to throw waste.

And these efforts did not completely go down the drain. At the end of the activity, when MAD volunteers issued a passionate appeal to the devotees present, and, in a way, also reprimanded the local shopkeepers in front of them for their apathy to the river’s plight, things began to change. They became sensitive and responsive. “Ham khoob dhyan rakhenge!” (We’ll take complete care now) shouted a woman shopkeeper. “Badhiya kaam kiya hai beta, kuch to sharam in sab ko aa hi gayi hogi,” (You’ve done great work, they must be feeling ashamed!) said an old begger.

And to the immense amazement of them all, one of the listeners at the end of the activity started chanting “Hip-Hip Hurrah!” for the Maddians. “These may be small, minute gestures. But each one of them has its own space in our hearts as we resolve to continue our noble initiative with greater efforts,” said another volunteer, Kushagra Goel. The Maddians managed to convince many devotees, most of whom expressed their desire to join MAD!

The MAD members were able to collect garbage like polythene, broken idols, trash bags, pots and organic waste. These were filled in up to 50 sacks brought for the drive. The drive witnessed active participation from school as well as college students. Each one was willing to outdo the other in terms of motivation and work.

There was one major change between this drive and last Sunday’s drive. On this occasion, Abhijay Negi of MAD had written to the Cantonment Board on Thursday, requesting the officials to provide help for waste collection. Their response was prompt, positive and visible on Sunday morning. The Cantonment Board officials present over there estimated the weight of the collected waste to be not less than 1,000 kg.

This assistance provided was in stark contrast to the dilly-dallying attitude of Doon Valley Waste Management Private Limited (DVWM), which had initially assured support, but had abused the Maddians when they had asked for help after their activity. This help gave the young ones respite and they expressed their thanks to the Cantonment Board officials. To carry the waste from the river bed to the temple top, the volunteers made a human chain to ensure that the waste collected reached the top of the stairs of the temple. “We want more youngsters to join us,” said Aakash Bhatia. “One can stay updated through our Facebook page and ensure that all contribute in saving the Doon Valley,” he added.

These youngsters expect that the civil society will give them a warm response. They have already started receiving assistance from some quarters. When these youngsters went to Raju Bhutani’s shop on Raja Road to buy the equipment for the scheduled drive, he did not charge any money when he got to know that his customers were ‘MAD’. The key members in action included Parth, Anurag, Bharat, Archit, Shivam, Rajat, Supragya, Malay, Pratyuesh, Ananya, Saumya, Shipra and Shreya.
