NRI booked for fraud:
The district police has booked NRI, Daljit Kaur, and her father Joginder Singh for allegedly duping Desinder Preet Singh, a Patiala resident, of Rs 29 lakh. As per the complaint filed by Desinder Preet Singh, Daljit had married him in 2007. She allegedly took the money to Canada and never returned. A case under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC has been registered.

625-kg poppy husk seized: Police has arrested a truck driver, Baljinder Singh, and recovered 625 kg of poppy husk from his vehicle near Shambhu on Sunday. Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police HS Mann said the contraband brought from West Bengal was to be sent to Fatehgarh Sahib. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against him and his helper, Buta Singh, who fled from the spot. In a separate case, Tarn Taran resident Swaran Singh was held with drugs and a countrymade pistol.

Counselling postponed: Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, on Saturday postponed the first and second counselling for MD/MSC/PG Diploma and MDS courses, scheduled for May 27 and May 30, respectively, till further notice. The authorities cited non-receipt of certified copies of National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test as the reason behind the decision. As the Supreme Court has made it mandatory to complete PG medical admissions by May 31, the Vice Chancellor Dr SS Gill has approached the central government to extend the deadline till July 31.

The Thalassaemic Children Welfare Association organised the 131st Blood Donation Camp, second in a series of six blood donation camps this year, at Zakir Hall, PGI. The camp was inaugurated by JD Gupta, Chairman, and Madan Lal Garg, president, Property Consultant Association, at 10.30 am on Sunday.

LPG subsidy plan from June 1:
The direct cash subsidy transfer of the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder scheme to consumers in Hamirpur, Una, Bilaspur and Mandi districts will be started from June 1. Himachal Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation Regional Manager Atar Singh Tomar said all LPG consumers in the districts should get uploaded with agencies concerned their Aadhaar card and bank account numbers to get the benefit. He also instructed all LPG agencies to take the initiative of getting registered with the agencies Aadhaar card and bank account numbers of consumers.

Online lecture for CUHP students:
The Department of Mass Communication and Electronic Media at the Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) organised an online video lecture on Wednesday. The resource person was Mithlesh Mishra from the Indian Institute of Information Technology in Allahabad. He taught students about website content management, website hosting, web browser, web server and meta data. Kuldeep Singh, Assistant Professor, School of Journalism, CUHP, said Mishra told students how one could keep websites secure from virus attacks and hacking. Dr Pradeep Nair, Head of the department, said the students would be directly related to new media technologies.

PALAMPUR
One killed in road accident:
A woman was killed and another received serious injuries when a car in which they were travelling met with an accident near Maranda, 5 km from here, on Pathankot-Mandi national highway on Saturday. The police said Gayatri Devi and her mother-in-law Savitri Devi were on their way to Maranda when Gayatri failed to negotiate a sharp curve and the car rolled down into a 50-ft deep gorge. Gayatri died on the spot while Savitri received serious injuries. She was admitted to the local Civil Hospital.
