Five get life term
Ludhiana, May 31
The Court of Additional Sessions Judge, Ranjit Kumar Jain, has convicted five persons of a family on the charge of killing a woman, identified as Varinder Kaur. Those convicted include the victim’s mother-in-law, Manmohan Kaur, father-in-law Jaswant Singh, brothers-in-law Inderpal Singh, Ravinder Singh and sister-in-law Satwinder Kaur.

A day after an anonymous email sent to 524 government schools created a stir in the education department, the police today swung into action and registered a case against unidentified person for creating a fake e-mail account of the district coordinator and sending objectionable mail to teachers.

The sale of commercial sites under the optimum use of vacant government land scheme by the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) through public auction held here today evoked a poor response as out of 73 commercial sites proposed to be put under the hammer, only 10 were sold for Rs 1.53 crore.

Labourer dies as wall collapses in Moti Nagar

A 20-year-old labourer was killed after a wall caved in at Gajja Jain Colony in Moti Nagar. The incident took place last evening when the deceased, Rajiv Kumar, was dismantling a portion of an under construction house with a hammer.

The three samples of eatables collected from different places in the month of May have failed the quality test. Food safety officer, Ludhiana, Manoj Khosla said: “The samples that failed the quality test include a samosa from the canteen of the Judicial Complex.

A 35-year-old mason, resident of Kamalpura village in Ludhiana district started consuming Zarda at the age of 10 years has fallen in grip of Alveolus cancer (jaw bone cancer). Father of four, Karamchand said, "I got to know about it a few years ago when I got some boils in my mouth. I tried desi medicine for a few months together which completely damaged my jaw bone and increased my trouble manifolds."

Trust to hand over Bhagat Singh Nagar scheme to MC

Decks have been cleared for handing over 475 acres Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar scheme of the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) on Pakhowal road to the Municipal Corporation for maintenance.

Independent councillors allege discrimination in development works

If the independent councillors in the mega city are to be believed, they are being discriminated in the allotment and execution of development projects from councillor's quota while the top officials of the Municipal Corporation stoutly refute the allegations saying political affiliation of a councillor has no role to play in the development works which are purely need-based.

Do slide testing for ruling out malaria: Experts

For ruling out malaria, always go for slide testing and do not rely on card testing. This was said by instructed Dr Vijay Sharma, Deputy Director Malaria, Punjab, while addressing doctors at Chritstian Medical College and Hospital during an interactive session organised while keeping in view the forthcoming season of malaria and dengue.

Cop caught consuming liquor on duty
Ludhiana, May 31
One policeman deputed at the Civil Hospital was caught consuming liquor, while its in charge was found missing from duty during a surprise check conducted by the SHO Division No 2. Harjit Singh, who was consuming liquor, fled from the scene after being spotted the SHO Gurpreet Singh, while in charge Jasvir Singh was absent from duty.

Youth booked for kidnapping minor

The Ladhowal police has booked a youth for kidnapping a 17-year-old girl on the pretext of marriage. The victim’s father said that Sonu kidnapped had his daughter from Chitti Colony.
