Chaos mars first meeting of Mussoorie MC
Mussoorie, June 2 MC president Manmohan Singh Mall said "unwanted" works recommended by the previous council would be cancelled and only those works would be approved that were required for the town's development. He said door-to-door garbage collection would begin soon. The MC had received tenders for the same and after the completion of the process, an NGO would be handed over
the job, he said. On the construction of Town Hall, Mall said a detailed project report was being prepared. The council was planning to construct it under the PPP mode with a mandatory multi-level parking facility on its premises. On the reconstruction of Clock Tower that was demolished by the previous council, he said the decision would be taken after holding talks with
the locals. It was decided that 'unwanted' hoardings on Mall Road would soon
be removed. The council would use funds amounting to Rs 64 lakh lakh received from the 13th Finance Commission for buying three vehicles, improving sanitation condition in the town and buying electricity equipment. It was proposed at the meeting that the vehicles that were allowed entry in the Mall Road area after
10 pm till 7 am would also have to pay entry fee. The proposal of raising the entry fee from Rs 100 to Rs 300 was also placed at the meeting, but the decision on it would be
taken later. The council passed a resolution to recover money from the officials responsible for the theft of two vehicles of the council in the previous tenure. A three-member committee has been formed
that will look into the parking allotment at Company Garden. Many members raised the issue of the fleecing of tourists at parking lots. Sri Venkateshwara Kalyanotsavam celebrated in city
Dehradun, June 2 The wedding (Kalyanam) of Lord Venkateshwara with Goddess Padmavati was commemorated on this occasion. A spectacular wedding venue was created. Musicians from Tirupati town played the traditional instrumental music which was interspersed with holy hymns chanted by the priests. In the end, prasadam made of various puddings of rice was distributed among the devotees. Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna also took blessings from the deity and prayed for the prosperity of the state. He said the country had a tradition of religious harmony, which taught us to be good human beings. The way Tirupati was offering residential and other facilities for the devotees, Uttarakhand must also provide the same sort of facilities to the devotees coming here for Chardham pilgrimage, he said. Chairman of Tirumala Tirupati Devsthanam (TTD), Kanumuru Bapiraju said a Sri Venkateshwara Swamy temple would soon be built in Dehradun. He said, “The state where Lord Venkateshwara’s wedding takes place gets blessed with peace and prosperity. So I wish for peace and prosperity not only for Dehradun but for Uttarakhand as a whole.” Cabinet minister Dinesh Aggarwal, MLA Subodh Uniyal and MLA Rajkumar were also present on the occasion. District Magistrate BVRC Purushottam came dressed in traditional attire and participated in the entire prayer ceremony with his family. |

Doon boy to attend football camp in France
Dehradun, June 2 The academy is famous for developing players like Robert Pires, Emmanuel Adebayor, Cisse and Louis Saha. He is a student of Maharana Pratap Sports College and is a regular member of the India team since 2009. He has represented India in three categories (U-13, U-14 and U-16). Jyal was selected for IMG Academy, Florida, (USA) in 2010-11 for nine months and for six months again in 2012. After getting coaching in the USA, this Doon footballer will now learn the finer points of soccer in France. Manoj Sharma, Principal, Maharana Pratap Sports College, says, “It is a matter of great pride that one of our students will get training in France. We are grateful to FC Metz Academy and Edukick Sports Pvt Ltd for helping local football gain valuable exposure.” The credit for making the French tour of the local footballer possible goes to Edukick Sports, a football company. Last year, the company had organised the visit of Denis Schaeffer, Director, FC Metz Academy, to Mussoorie and Dehradun. Denis, accompanied by his under-17 chief coach Sebastian, visited Maharana Pratap Sports College and was impressed with the local talent. The French coach spotted Nitin and was keen on grooming him.

Sub Jagat Singh scales Mt Everest third time
Dehradun, June 2 This time, he was part of the NCC expedition that was flagged off by Union Minister of State for Defence Jitendra Singh on April 3. He successfully scaled Mount Everest on May 19. He spent nearly an hour at the summit. Earlier, he had scaled the world's highest peak in 2003 and 2005. The expedition returned to the base camp on May 22. |

Dehradun, June 2 Batting first after winning the toss, the UNIDO team, helped by a brilliant century by opener Pramod Chandel, scored 309 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 40 overs. Pramod Chandel scored 156 runs in 118 balls with the help of 18 boundaries and five sixes. Gaurav Chitkara also scored 36 runs. Chandra Paul took four wickets for 40 runs. Chasing the UNIDO total, the Dena Bank team was all out for 212 runs in 39.2 overs to lose the match by 97 runs. Chetan Bist was the top
scorer with 60 runs while Sumeet Gulia and Gaurav Sharma contributed 43 and 34 runs, respectively. Unit Mohan claimed three wickets for 26. Arun Chaprana took two for 36 runs and Gopal Nain two for 48 runs. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up of the tournament. Bahuguna said his government was committed towards promoting sports in the state. He said an international stadium with the help of the ONGC would be constructed where international matches would be held. He awarded the winners' trophy and a cheque for Rs.1.5 lakh to the winning team and a trophy and Rs 1 lakh to the runners-up team. He also presented a cheque for Rs 50,000 to Pramod Chandel of the UNIDO team who was adjudged as the 'Man of the Tournament'. Uttarakhand Sports Minister Dinesh Aggarwal also present on the occasion. |
AEC celebrates 66th anniversary
Dehradun, June 2 He wished them success in future endeavours. Brig AK Vyas, Head, Academic Department, Indian Military Academy, the senior most serving AEC officer in the station, congratulated all members of the AEC family and emphasised continuous professional growth. Army Educational Corps, which was reformed on June 1, 1947, has been in the forefront in imparting knowledge-based education training at the Indian Military Academy. On the occasion, senior veteran of the Corps who are residing in Dehradun were also felicitated and invited to a social get-together. |
Sanskrit has made India vishwa guru: Guv
Dehradun, June 2 He said the Vedas had been translated into 133 languages of the world. The Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads, Bhagwad Geeta and the Ramayana had been written in Sanskrit and had made India “Vishwa Guru” and added that the Gurukul tradition was also unique and valuable. The Governor spoke about the power of the Gayatri Mantra and quoted Allama Iqbal’s nazm which was a translation of the Gayatri Mantra. The Governor said he was making efforts to give Sanskrit a special place in Uttarakhand. He also released the Gurukul journal. The programme was the closing of the three-day conference, held at the Gurukul to mark its 13th foundation day. The conference was organised jointly by the Gurukul and the Sanskrit Academy, Delhi. Academy chairman Prof Shashiprabha Kumar said westernised education in English had taken the younger generation away from India’s cultural heritage. Others present at the programme were founder of the Gurukul Swami Pranavanand Saraswati, Sanskrit Academy secretary Dr Dharmendra, Dr JK Shastri and students of the Gurukul. |
Govt tells banks to improve CDR in hill dists
Dehradun, June 2 A low credit-deposit ratio indicates banks are not lending much against deposits mobilised. She asked the banks to sanction maximum loans to women under various welfare schemes launched by the government to empower them
economically. Entrepreneurs in remote villages should also be given all possible financial assistance for the growth of rural industries, she said. Principal Secretary (Finanace) Rakesh Sharma also advised the committee to sanction loans under the Virchand Garhwali Self Employment Scheme in the tourism sector not just for purchasing vehicles but also for construction of guest houses and resorts in the hill areas so that the maximum number of lodging facilities are available
for tourists. Expressing the hope that the imbalance in credit-deposit ratio will go away gradually, RBI regional MD R L Sharma said it had risen from 53.41 per cent in 2012 to 57.78 per cent in March this year.
