Molestation victim’s family booked for assaulting accused
Kotkapura, March 18 It is learnt that the accused was at large ever since the crime took place on February 20. In the meantime, the victim’s family was allegedly under persistent political pressure to withdraw their complaint. However, three days ago, the Punjab and Haryana High Court declined the accused’s application for anticipatory bail following which he surrendered to the police. Notably, on the same day, the police revealed to the victim’s family about a criminal case that was registered against them following the accused’s complaint on February 22. On the day of crime, the victim returned from her school and went to her room above her father’s shop. It is alleged that the accused followed her and tried to molest her. He was caught red-handed
and given a sound thrashing by the victim’s family members. However in a complaint to the Kotkapura police on February 22, the accused had alleged that he was beaten up by the family members as his scooter had accidentally hit the girl’s father on February 20. Meanwhile, the victim’s father alleged that the police registered the case after his family did not succumb to the pressure exerted on them to withdraw the case and now, a cross criminal case was registered against them in a bid to mount pressure. “We were informed about the complaint against us only after the accused had surrendered,” said one of the victim’s uncles. He accused the police of registering the complaint in back date. On his part, Kotkapura city SHO Gursher Singh said the police had registered both the complaints following the statements of both the parties. It was for the court to decide what action was warranted according to the law.

Class XII exams:19 copying cases registered in Muktsar
Muktsar, March 18 The maximum cases (11) were registered in Kalgidhar Public School, Malout, followed by four in Government Boys’ School, Muktsar, three in Bhai Mohri Ji Senior Secondary School, village Gurusar, and one in Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Muktsar. Criminal cases have been registered against three persons who were impersonating students. District Education Officer (DEO) Devinder Kumar Rajouria said, “Copying case has surfaced only in one government school. The remaining schools are private. The staff on examination duty has been changed at the schools where copying cases were registered.” He further said all the cheating cases were registered in class XII exams. No case of copying surfaced in class X exams. Rajouria also exhorted the students to refrain from using unfair means while taking examination. “Those who carry copying material not only spoil their own future, but also earn a bad name to their parents. These students may clear the exams, but can’t become successful in life,” said Rajouria. An official in the office of the DEO said the number of copying cases registered this year was higher than the last year. The official claimed that all the cases were registered before the students started copying. “The copying material was confiscated before the students could open them,” said the

Abohar, March 18 Notably, the MC being run by the BJP, an alliance partner in the state government, had already been reprimanded for at least five times during the past about two months for its failure in putting the derailed sewage and drinking water supply system in order. As per the copy of the fresh HC orders received today, Justice Garg had taken up the CWP No. 5576 of 2011 filed by Santosh Rani, the widow of an MC employee Ashok Kumar. She had resented that the MC had paid only Rs 50,000 out of the arrears of Rs 6.31 lakh. The court observed that the admitted liability of the MC was more than Rs 6 lakh and the amount has not been paid. While listing the case for May 6, 2013, the High Court has ordered that the official car of the Executive Officer (EO) of the MC be attached. The EO shall not draw any salary till the payment is made to the petitioner.— OC |

Aphid attack threatens wheat crop
Moga, March 18 A section of farmers hurriedly sprayed insecticides even though scientists claimed that the situation was under control and that there was no need for spraying insecticides. Moga Chief Agriculture Officer Dr Darshan Singh Sandhu said, “The attack is not that serious as of now. But, the farmers need to monitor their wheat crop regularly and check it for any attack by the insect.” Dr Jaswinder Singh Brar, a state award-winning agriculture scientist, said he had visited 12 villages in Moga district over the past two days to assess the situation arising out of aphid attack. While educating the farmers at Landeke village, he said they should first inspect their crop at ear-head stage. The farmers should randomly collect 10 ear-heads of wheat from their fields and then check the presence of aphid. If aphid is found on five or more ear-heads, then one should spray chemicals. Otherwise, the attack is considered normal and it does not cause financial losses, he said. When The Tribune team visited Saleena and its adjoining villages, it found that a few farmers had started spraying insecticides. It was learnt that they were either being advised
wrongly by insecticide dealers or were just emulating other villagers. What are
