The body of former Municipal Council president Tulsi Ram Dhaulia was found in a mutilated condition in a well near Patel Park in Patel Nagar (also known as Sukhera Basti) this morning. He had been missing for past two weeks.

The well — which is believed to have been constructed by the family of Bagh Ali Sukhera, a member of the Punjab Legislative Council (MLC), in the pre-partition era — is located about 200 m from the deceased's house in Prem Nagar.

The shopkeepers in Bazaar No. 6 kept their shutters down till afternoon. The police, however, foiled an attempt by a handful of youths to force strike in other markets. Dhaulia's relatives said he had left his house in the third week of February without informing anyone and that he could not be contacted after that.

Congress Legislative Party leader Sunil Jakhar visited Nehru Memorial Civil Hospital and expressed condolence to the bereaved family. He discussed all possible aspects, including murder, behind the mysterious death with the Superintendent of Police Varinder Singh Brar.

The body has been shifted to the Faridkot hospital for a post-mortem examination by a medical board keeping in view the gravity of the case. Jakhar said he would meet Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to demand a CBI inquiry into the case.
