Finally, a solution to end hyacinth menace in Harike
Ferozepur, March 5 Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) M Sudhakar said the idea behind the initiative was to evolve a permanent solution to the problem of water hyacinth which was affecting the aquatic fauna in the lake. Almost two-third of the water surface in the wetland remains covered with this weed which not only impedes the flow of water but also poses a grave threat to aquatic life. The DFO said to start with, a few people belonging to village Sudhian and Churian situated along the left marginal bundh (LMB) of the Sutlej were trained to create beautiful handicrafts out of hyacinth. “Now, around 40 women belonging to these villages are undergoing similar training,” he added. The DFO further said the move will not only generate employment opportunities for the rural folks but will also improve the local economy and provide sustainable livelihood alternative. "We have contacted the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) and WWF (India) to help prepare a marketing plan to sell the handicraft to make the process sustainable," he said. "Initially, we plan to establish two self-help groups (SHG) and open their account so that the funds can be created and managed. After imparting adequate training and refinement of the products by value addition, the products will be standardised and the WWF authorities will then ensure their certification and work on cost analysis. Thereafter, a comprehensive marketing strategy will be envisaged for linkage with the business and industrial houses," said the forest officials. Earlier in the year 1999-2000, when water hyacinth had spread wildly all over this wetland, machinery and mechanised equipment had been pressed into service by the military authorities. However, after the much-cleaned lake was handed back to the state government, things were back to square one and the hyacinth again started multiplying within no time making the entire effort a futile exercise. |
PLSA chief orders legal awareness camps across state
Faridkot, March 5 In a letter to all district and session judges, the PLSA chairman gave the information about a legal awareness camp organized in Faridkot some days back. At the camp, the district legal service authorities (DLSA) received many complaints about the BPL pension being illegally retained by sarpanches. Besides this misappropriation, it was found that many ‘ghost’ pensions were being claimed by the families even though their relatives were dead for years. At the legal awareness camp, it was found that while some ineligible persons were getting the old age pension, many of those who were actually old were not getting the pension. As many eligible got their pensions after they narrated their woes at the legal awareness camp in Faridkot and the pension of many illegal recipients was discontinued, so similar camps need to be held across the state for the redressal of grievances of the poor and illiterate, said the chairman, PLSA, in his letter sent to the district and sessions judges.
