Schools’ demand for music lecturer falls on deaf ears
Fazilka, February 27 This is despite the fact that the heads of these schools have asked the Education Department several times to appoint lecturers in the subject but in vain. "The students have been suffering for long. They are been left with no other alternative but to arrange for teachers on their own," said the guardian of a student studying in Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Fazilka. "We have sent the proposal regarding the appointment of lecturers in music several times to the senior officials," said District Education Officer, Fazilka, Sandeep Dhuria. According to official sources, the schools most affected are the Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Fazilka and Abohar where over 180 students have opted to study music as a subject. The subject is being taught by the master cadre teachers as an alternative measure. "There are surplus posts of lecturers in music in some schools of the state which can be shifted to Fazilka district," suggested the patron of the NGO, Shiksha Sudhar Committee, Raj Kishore Kalra. Citing an example, he regretted that the only music lecturer in the area, Parveen Kumar, has been posted at the Government Senior Secondary School in Jaito (Faridkot district) where not even a single student in music is receiving education in the subject. |

Grapplers protest move to drop wrestling from 2020 Olympics
Faridkot, February 27 The protesting wrestlers said the game was the first sports to be included when the Olympics began in 1896. "It is a matter of regret that the IOC has decided to drop this game which is played in 180 countries," said Gurmeet Singh Brar, vice-president, Wrestling Federation of India. "The IOC's decision is ridiculous," said Hardial Singh Riasti, president, District Wrestling Association, Faridkot. He said many Indian wrestlers who won laurels for the nation at the international level belong to Faridkot district. "Even the Punjab government has decided to open a special academy for the promotion of wrestling in Faridkot," said Riasti. After holding a protest march, the wrestlers, including Randhir Singh Dhreea, Sunil Batti, Maninder Singh, Vishavdeep Singh, Mandeep Kaur, Jaspreet Kaur and Amanprit Kaur, submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Faridkot. The memorandum will be forwarded to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) so that it can put its views across at the next meeting of the IOC. Six out of total eight wrestlers in the Punjab junior team which won the national championship last year were from Faridkot. Even in the state team of senior wrestlers, six of the seven players belonged to Faridkot. Faridkot district has produced 16 wrestlers of international fame, including three women. "The IOC decision does not mean the end for aspiring wrestlers. The wrestlers can appeal. There is an executive board meeting in May in St. Petersburg, Russia, and a final vote in September," said Gurmeet Singh Brar. "It is ironical that while the IOC voted to eliminate wrestling, it decided to continue with the modern pentathlon. In the last Olympics, modern pentathlon had only 26 countries participating while medallists in wrestling are from 29 countries. While 180 countries wrestle, only 53 engage in modern pentathlon," said Gurmeet Singh Brar. |
