Power connections for drip irrigation
Faridkot, February 19 In Faridkot, Muktsar, Ferozepur and Bathinda districts, the enforcement wing of the PSPCL has detected 28 such connections in the last two weeks wherein the farmers were not using the drip and sprinkling irrigation systems. A fine of Rs 97,000 each has been imposed on these farmers as they were not using the power connections for the targeted purpose, said Karnail Singh Mann, SE, PSPCL (Enforcement). To conserve the depleting water resources in Punjab, power connections were provided on priority basis to the farmers under a special scheme and the beneficiary needed to use these connections only for drip and sprinkling irrigation systems. "But during the inspection, there was no sign of the use of the drip and sprinkling system. So it amounted to unauthorized use of electricity (UUE) and fines have been imposed on these farmers," said Karnail Singh Mann. All these farmers have been asked to use drip and sprinkling system failing which they would be charged double the existing rates, said the SE. Drip and sprinkling system is highly subsidised and the department of agriculture, Government of India, bears up to 70 per cent of the cost. Drip irrigation is the slow and precise application of water and nutrients directly to the root zones of the plants in a predetermined manner using a pointed source. A drip irrigation, micro irrigation or trickle irrigation design can be customized to meet the specific needs of farmers while maintaining an optimum moisture level within the root zones. After the launch of the system, about 25,000 hectares of land in Punjab had been covered. There are 17,652 beneficiaries under the scheme in Punjab, said Mohinder Kanwal, conservator, soils, Punjab. Sources in Soil Conservation Department Punjab revealed that many farmers opted for sprinkling and drip system only to get the power connection on priority basis; otherwise these farmers were waiting for the power connection for over a decade.
