Accusing the Jain family of raising an unauthorised residential colony, the case was registered on August 26, 2007 at the Mehna police station in Moga district. Earlier, on February 4, the court of the judicial magistrate (First Class) in Faridkot had cancelled the bail of Puneet Jain and issued non-bailable warrants, ordering his arrest as he was not appearing before the court despite reminders. The court had also declared Puneet an absconder in July 2010. Even in April 2010, the court had issued his arrest warrants as he failed to appear. But all the time, the police submitted a report in the court that as Puneet was in Canada, so the warrants could not be executed. In the last five years, the case had acquired a political hue as Jain was accusing a former Akali minister in Moga of implicating his family members in a false case. Though the trial in the case started in Moga courts but in February 2010, the then Congress MLA Joginder Pal Jain moved an application in the court of the district and sessions judge, Faridkot, demanding that the court to shift the cases from Moga to Faridkot. Jain had alleged that he and his family members were facing problems in contesting the case in Moga due to the influence of a SAD (B) leader. “No advocate wanted to contest our case due to the pressure of the Akali leader,” Jain had averred. But after the case was shifted to Faridkot, Puneet Jain failed to appear before the court. Earlier, the court was annoyed with the attitude of Puneet Jain for leaving for Canada without obtaining its permission. Today, MLA Joginder Pal Jain and his other family members filed an application in the court, seeking exemption from personal appearance in the case. The court allowed the application. Case history

The inmate, Gurwinder Bindu, was lodged in Bathinda Central Jail in connection with the murder of Simarjeet Maur. Simarjit, the son of Baldev Maur, was shot dead near Dashmesh Gun House in the busy Mehna Chowk area on September 5 last year in a cross-firing between two groups. The bone of contention between the groups was property dispute between two brother-in-laws. He, however, confirmed the escape saying more information in this regard could be collected from the Civil Hospital only. DSP City Gurmeet Kingra recorded statements of the doctors and the jail guards at the civil hospital. Kingra said the exact number of those involved in the crime is not yet known as they put chilly powder into the eyes of the jail guards. They managed to take away the official carbine of the jail guards but its magazine loaded with cartridges had been left behind. Winning bidders default on balance payment
Fazilka, March 4 The auction of PB-22-G series at Fazilka on February 8, 2013 created a record of sorts when the number PB-22-G-0001 was auctioned for Rs 25 lakh to one Abhimanyu Kumar for his Audi car. The bidder got good publicity but did not turn up to deposit the remaining amount of Rs 24.75 lakh within the stipulated period of 10 days. The District Transport Office, Fazilka, extended the date more than once but the owner remained elusive. “Ultimately, we will have to forfeit his security deposit of Rs 25,000 deposited against the auction of the number Pb-22-G-0001,” said Fazilka District Transport Officer Balbir Rana. Surprisingly, the runner-up for the number Pb-22-G-0001, who had offered Rs 21.50 lakh, has also reportedly declined the offer to carry the prestigious number. Most others who had offered the highest bid between Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh for other fancy numbers have also reportedly backtracked. Only one bidder has deposited an amount of Rs 2. 70 lakh for the registration number Pb-22-G-0009. The government which expected to earn a handsome amount of Rs 50 lakh from the auction of more than 100 fancy and other numbers has practically “lost” a major chunk of the revenue. “After the lapse of one month, all the allotments made during the auction, for which the amount has not been deposited, shall stand cancel,” informed DTO Rana. When confronted with the issue of cancellation of fancy numbers Additional State Transport Commissioner (Enforcement), Harmail Singh, while talking to The Tribune over mobile phone, said, “The department is contemplating a foolproof system to rope in the bidders to ensure that they do not backtrack after the auction. For this a proposal is being worked out to see that the successful bidders deposit 25 percent of the auctioned amount on the spot.” Auction of Fancy numbers |
