In the dark zone
Ludhiana, March 18
The Central Groundwater Authority has declared Ludhiana, Khanna and Pakhowal as dark zones where groundwater cannot be drawn for industrial, agricultural or commercial use without its consent. The authority said submersible pumps or tubewells could be permitted only for domestic purposes. It’s noteworthy that almost 75 per cent of Punjab is on verge of acute water recession, with water level dropping at the rate of almost 0.75 metre per year.

Religious bodies confront MC
Ludhiana, March 18
After its proposed demolition of shops reportedly constructed on a government land near Mahavir Temple in Gur Mandi on Friday, which could not be carried out due to a stiff opposition by the affected shopkeepers and functionaries of the temple trust, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation is now under pressure from several religious bodies to defer its action to clear the encroachment.

50-yr-old man hacked to death
Ludhiana, March 18
Panic spread in the Model Town Extension D-Block area after a 50-year-old man was found murdered at his one-room apartment this evening. The victim has been identified Mahadev, an egg vendor, who was residing in a building owned by former MC councillor Inderjit Singh Gill.

Woman booked for concocting robbery story
Ludhiana, March 18
The city police has booked a 28-year-old woman for concocting a robbery story. The police has also arrested three persons, including a minor, and recovered jewellery and cash that was stolen from a house.

Father ‘poisons’ children to death
Mandi Gobindgarh, March 18
A migrant labourer residing in a rented room at Dadheri village allegedly poisoned his children to death when his wife, Anju, had gone to a temple this morning. When Anju returned from the temple, she found her two-year-old daughter Muskeen vomiting and her four-year-old son Vijay, aka Bittoo, lying unconscious.

Residents of the Khamano sub-division were in a state of shock after hearing the news of the death of six policemen in a road accident. Four of the victims were from Khamano.

Greenland School to introduce CBSE’s international curriculum

Keeping pace with the global needs, the Central Board of Secondary Education has formulated an internationally benchmarked global curriculum, the CBSE-International. Green Land School is among the 50 schools shortlisted all over India and only the school in the state to run the pilot programme under the new curriculum.

50 blood samples not cleared for transfusion

Lowering age of consent opposed
Shai Imam and president of the Majlis Ahrar Islam Hind Maulana Habib-ur-Rahman has opposed the proposal of the government to lower the age of consent for girls from 18 to 16 years, saying the move was ill-conceived and will prove counter productive.

2 held with Rs 2-cr drugs
Ludhiana, March 18
The city police has nabbed two persons from different parts of the city and recovered 590 grams of psychotropic drugs worth Rs 2 crore from their possession. The drugs were allegedly meant to be used at a rave party. The accused have been identified as Brij Lal, a resident of New Hargobind Nagar, and Satbir Singh of Uttar Pradesh.

Man killed in accident
Ludhiana, March 18
A resident of Kheri village was killed after being hit by a tractor-trailer on Saturday evening. The victim, Prem Kumar, was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The police has registered a case.
