Three weeks after molesting child, man surrenders to police
Faridkot, March 15 The victim's family was running from pillar to post since February 20 when the accused, Satish Kumar, made an attempt to molest the girl, a student of class VI. It was alleged that the police was reluctant to arrest the accused under alleged political pressure. It is alleged that the girl's family was getting threats to withdraw the complaint. It is reported that those threatening the family said they would file a counter case against four members of the family for the alleged offence of thrashing the accused. The crime was committed on February 20 at Kotkapura town in Faridkot district. On the day of the crime, the girl student had come back from school and gone upstairs into her room above her father's shop. According to the FIR lodged with the police, the accused followed her upstairs and tried to molest her. The accused was reportedly caught red-handed and was beaten up by the family members. The accused had even made a complaint to the police, demanding action against the victim's family for beating him up. Gursher Singh, SHO, Kotkapura, said the police was searching for the accused and he was arrested today. However, informed sourcesrevealed that the accused
surrendered before the police after his anticipatory bail was rejected by the High Court. In another case of child molestation, the Kotkapura (Sadar) police today booked a man for molesting his 12-year-old daughter. Farmers to get training in crop diversification
Muktsar, March 15 The district administration on Thursday called upon the farmers to join the FFS to learn the techniques of knowledge-based agricultural practices from the experts. ATMA project director Karanjit Singh informed that the fisheries department runs one such FFS in Channu village while the ATMA itself started another FFS on crop diversification in village Bhagsar. One more FFS will open in Khunan Khurd village where the technique to improving farm health will be taught to the farmers, he added. Deputy Project Director, ATMA, Gagandeep Singh said generally, the farmers hesitate to adopt new techniques taught by the extension workers. But when they see the same happening with their own eyes at the FFS, they adopt them easily and with full confidence at their own farm. Meanwhile, Chief Agricultural Officer (CAO) Beant Singh said any allied department can start an FFS with a financial assistance of "In the FFS, stationary and agricultural literature will be provided free of cost to the farmers, besides an honorarium to the visitor scientist," Beant Singh added. He said the basic aim of the project was to impart technical education about a particular crop season to the farmers at their doorsteps. Each FFS operates for six months and holds a class every month. During the class, scientists deliver lectures on monthly farm practices. — TNS

Cop dismissed for filing false affidavit
Fazilka, March 15 The SSP has also recommended disciplinary action against six employees including a sub-inspector who helped the accused in issuing the wrong police verification certificate. Sunil Kumar has been booked under the IPC at the local city police station yesterday. As per the FIR, Sunil Kumar, a resident of village Aahal Bodla in Fazilka sub-division, applied for recruitment as a constable to the Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar in 2010. He also filed an affidavit along with the application that no criminal case was pending against him. On the basis of his statement, Sunil was enrolled. He was later transferred to Fazilka district. One Vijay Kumar, also of the same village Aahal Bodla, who allegedly had a dispute with Sunil, complained to the SSP, Fazilka, that a criminal case, dated July 26, 2007, was pending at the local police station against Sunil. Concealing these facts, he had filed a false affidavit to get the job, it was alleged. Following the complaint, the SSP Fazilka, asked the Superintendent of Police (Headquarters), Manmohan Sharma to conduct an inquiry into the matter. The SP (H) found that a criminal case was pending against Sunil. Moreover, negligence of another half a dozen employees including a sub- inspector, also surfaced as they failed to perform their duty while issuing police verification certificate to Sunil as none of them verified the actually fact that a criminal case was pending against Sunil. |

Cancellation of auction disappoints bidders
Fazilka, March 15 Notably, the auction for agricultural land on lease, 13 commercial booths in Ghas Mandi area, half a dozen plots in local Dhobi Ghat, one and half dozen shops at local Senia Road and a small shop in the thickly populated cycle bazaar was to be conducted today. There was a huge crowd and the local and rural areas residents who had come to offer their bid before the scheduled time of 11 am. According to sources, hundreds of bidders had reportedly deposited the earnest money with the council authorities by the time. The council had spent thousands of rupees for publishing the advertisements in different newspapers. The public announcement for the auction continued to be made till 11 am but the auction was abruptly cancelled that too without assigning any reason. The prospective bidders smelt a rat in the cancellation of the auction particularly the 13 commercial booths in the prime area of Ghas Mandi (old grain market), situated in the heart of the town, as most bidders had come to take part in the auction of these booths. The bidders, Sumit Kumar, Raju, Vijay Kumar, Krishan Lal, Ashok Kumar and Ramesh Kumar regretted that if the proposed auction was to be cancelled, they should have been informed at least a day ahead through the public address system or by newspapers to avoid any inconvenience to them. On the other hand, Executive Officer, Municipal Council, Sukhdev Singh, said he was busy in official engagements. He, however, said the next date of the auction would be informed in due course. — OC |
