Municipal corporation’s final warning to
shopkeepers
Mayor says strict action will be taken this time in Company Bagh Chowk, Jyoti Chowk, Basti Adda Chowk up to Nakodar Chowk Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, March 3 Teams of the Tehbazaari Department, accompanied by police officials, issued warnings to shopkeepers of Sunday Market to remove their shops, stalls and encroachments from given area, failing which strict action would be taken against them.
The visit of officials resulted in a commotion in the market, as some vendors began wrapping up their stalls today itself. Other shopkeepers, though, surrounded the MC officials to demand an alternative place to set up their shop. The teams issued warning to shopkeepers encroaching on the road stretch of Company Bagh Chowk, Jyoti Chowk (Rainak Bazaar), Basti Adda Chowk up to Nakodar Chowk. While the move was welcomed by residents, some expressed reservations about the action, claiming that the encroachments had usually resurfaced in the past. Mayor Sunil Jyoti said this time encroachers would be strictly dealt with. “For the past few months we have been taking serious action against encroachers in the city and activities in this direction have regularly been taking place. While we also need people’s co-operation for the success of these drives, we are committed to press hard on it this time,” the Mayor said. Vikrant Verma, superintendent, Tehbazaari Department said, “We have issued the last warning to shopkeepers and from next Sunday, no encroachments will be permitted in the area.” Speaking on the encroachers’ demand for the provision for an alternative place, Verma said, “Reactions during such drives are inevitable. But we did not tell shopkeepers to set up the encroachments, so we can’t provide them any alternatve space either.” Notably, the Sunday Bazaar encroachments have given a hard time for many years. Due to the busy, congested Sunday Bazaar, residents in the vicinity have often complained of serious problems. They say they still (until today) have to park their vehicles (cars and bikes) outside the area and have to bring them back in the night, as during the day, there is no room to move vehicles to their houses. Traffic congestions are also common and the bazaar also poses a threat to patients because ambulances and vehicles can’t be moved in and out. |
