2 held for theft bid at ATM
Ludhiana, March 3
The city police has arrested two persons who had attempted to break an automatic teller machine (ATM) at Jodhewal Basti on the night of March 1.
The accused, identified as Amit Kumar and Shiva of the Chawni Mohalla area, were nabbed by the Jodhewal police following a tip-off.
11 low-floor buses to be flagged off today

Strange are the ways of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation officials' working. Even as 11 low-floor buses, meant for the city bus service, reached the city around 20 days ago, the buses will be pressed into service tomorrow. Sources said the senior MC officials, who wanted to hold a ‘formal’ inauguration of these buses, took around 20 days just to finalise the plan.
3 months on, Health Dept employees await salaries

Employees of the Health Department working as Swasthya Sahayaks under the anti-larva programme are not alone who have not got salaries for the past three months, but certain officers and PCMS doctors have also been waiting for their salaries. It has been more than two months that officers and PCMS doctors of the department have not received their salaries.
Shifting of Civil Surgeon's office in doldrums

After a span of 10 months, when Health and Family Welfare Minister Madan Mohan Mittal made an announcement that the Civil Surgeon's office would be shifted to a safer building on the premises of the Civil Hospital, there seems to be no streak of hope for the staff and officers working here.

Attack victim succumbs to burns
Ludhiana, March 3
A 22-year-old woman, who was set on fire by assailants on March 1, succumbed to burns at the Civil Hospital here last night.
The victim, who has been identified as Rani from Bihar, lived along with her husband Harinder Singh in Latto Dana village, near
Kohara, on Chandigarh Road.

Residents face inconvenience

Since Aadhaar cards enrolment machines have been sent to educational institutions for enrolment of students, residents coming to the post office for enrolment are facing inconvenience. After the orders of the Deputy Commissioner Rahul
Tewari, that preference would be given to the beneficiaries of the government schemes. The preference is being given to students.
No dustbins at
railway platform No. 1
Ludhiana, March 3
In the absence of dustbins at Platform 1, passengers passing from here are forced to throw garbage on the railway track. The platform receives maximum number of trains daily, yet there is no dustbin installed here.

Gurdwara flower show draws large crowds

It was a riot of colour at “Balehari Kudrat Vaseya”, annual flower show, held at Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Sarabha Nagar, today. Competitions saw participation of a large number of residents here.

Mayor has green plans for city

On the concluding day of the flower and baby show organised by the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation at Nehru Rose Garden, here today, the Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria promised that all green belts, parks, road dividers and chowks would be maintained properly so that the city could be given a green makeover.
Janmeja Singh Johl has 30 Punjabi fonts to his credit
Ludhiana, March 3
He began creating Punjabi fonts in 1990, when people had not even thought of creating fonts for Gurmukhi script.
"Although I didn't know this, according to Surinder Dhanjal, who has the data of the creation of Punjabi fonts, I was the first one to create the fonts," says Janmeja Singh
Johl, who has to his credit the creation of more than 30 Punjabi fonts.
Sartaaj mesmerises audience with poetic verses, Sufi songs

A musical concert, "Afsaane Sartaaj De", was held yesterday. The concert was organised by the Punjab Cultural Society.
Dressed up in a long traditional kurta, Satinder Sartaaj presented Punjabi-Sufi music and later on mesmerised the audience with his poetic verses.

Contractual coaches sans salaries for three months

Coaches, working with the Sports Department, Punjab, have been facing financial crunch, as they have not been receiving salaries for the last three months. As many as 150 coaches have been working with the Punjab government on contract basis for the last five years.
