New Delhi, October 26
The Delhi Police claims to have arrested a person, who is a Deputy Manager (Finance) with Maruti Udyog Ltd, for allegedly duping the company to the tune of Rs 1,71,15,000. The accused has been identified as Raj Kumar Singh Chauhan.

According to the police, Brig (Retd.) A. K. Misra, who is posted as a Chief General Manager (Vigilance), reported to the police that the accused had duped the company of crores between January 2004 and September 2004. The alleged fraud was committed by producing fake vouchers.

During investigation, the police learnt that the accused had opened at least a dozen accounts in the name of fake companies by producing fake documents. Since he was a Chartered Accountant, it was easy for him to perpetrate a fraud of this kind, said a police official. These accounts had been opened in different bank branches all over the city.

The accused had produced fake vouchers of bogus companies and also issued cheques in their names. Eventually, he issued 15 cheques in favour of the fake companies and even got them cleared.

The ACP of the Delhi Police, M. K. Sharma, who was asked to solve the case, had unearthed around 10 bogus companies, whose accounts were opened in eight branches of different banks all over the city.

Raj Kumar Singh Chauhan did his B.Com from Sri Ram College of Commerce in 1989, and did his CA in 1992. He also completed his ICWA in 1993, and joined MUL in 1996, as Assistant Manager. Later, in 2004, he was promoted as Deputy Manager (Sales and Accounts Department). He was also empowered to make payments.

Murder case solved

With the arrest of two persons, the Delhi Police claims to have solved a murder case in which one Udai Bagh, a resident of Kishangarh, had been killed. The accused have been identified as Nepal Singh (40) and Karambir Singh (36).

On October 24, there was a quarrel in the Vasant Kunj area. The police reached the spot and found Udai lying injured on the roadside. He was taken to the nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

During investigation, it was revealed that on the day of the incident, there was a fight between the accused and the victim at 11 pm. The police said that Nepal Singh was watching television when Suresh, who wanted to go to bed, requested the former to switch off the TV. When a livid Nepal Singh began hitting Suresh, Udai Bagh intervened and requested the former to leave the latter alone. A miffed Nepal Singh, in an inebriated state, started thrashing Udai as well. He also sent for his brother Karambir and the duo took Udai outside and started battering him with stones. Later, they left Udai unconscious on the road. When the police was informed, Udai was taken to the hospital, where he had been declared brought dead.

Extortionists caught red-handed

The Delhi Police have arrested two persons who were allegedly trying to extort money from a factory owner in Shahdara in East district. The police have launched a hunt for an ex-employee of the factory who was also said to be involved in the extortion. The accused have been identified as Peer Mohammed and Dilip Misra. The third accused, Vinod, who was earlier working in the factory, is at large.

According to the police, Sanjiv Kumar, the complainant, was running a dying unit in the area. The accused had demanded Rs one lakh from Sanjiv on the ground that his factory was illegal as the government had ordered all polluting industries to shift from residential areas. They also threatened that they would lodge a complaint with the local SDM and police as the factory was discharging pollutants into the drains.

Sanjiv arranged the money but also made a complaint to the local police in Shahdara and, accordingly, a trap was laid and the police arrested the duo from the spot red-handed. During investigations, the police got to know that Pir Mohammed was a rickshaw-puller and Dilip was a worker in the same factory.

Rs 4 cr worth of heroin seized
Our Correspondent

Ghaziabad, October 26
The Special Task Force has arrested a youth Bajarya on Railway Road with 4 kg heroin which, according to police, is worth Rs 4 crore on the international market.

The heroin was being carried from Kanpur to Jama Masjid, Delhi, by a drug peddler, the police said. The man carrying it was to be paid Rs 10,000 for the task. A team of Kotwali police and special operations group had nabbed a youth on Dasna Road tri-junction at 1 am after a tip-off. As the drug peddler tried to flee, he was overpowered. He was carrying light yellow-coloured packets in a bag, which was found to be heroin.

The culprit identified himself as Harish Lamba, son of Om Prakash Lamba of Roop Nagar, Delhi. Harish told the police that he had gone to Kanpur two weeks ago on a business trip where he was offered Rs 10,000 for carrying a bag to Jama Masjid, Delhi, by one Mohd Yusuf.

He said a special courier of Yusuf had come to Navyug Market, Ghaziabad by car and handed over the bag to him.

According to police Circle Officer Chiranjeev Nath Sinha, the drug consignment had a value of Rs 4 crore on the international market. He said the police were trying to track down other members of this racket. It may be added that Ghaziabad is fast becoming a key centre of narcotics where the drug peddlers and those dealing in illegal arms and weapons often take refuge. Illegal narcotics and arms are collected, stored and hidden here for onward delivery in Delhi. Kela Bhatta, Mussori and Loni have lately developed as main centres for the nefarious trade.

Sahibabad police had arrested two Nepali youths recently with 4 kg charas. Narcotics are being smuggled from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nepal for distribution in UP and Delhi, the police said.

Migratory workers give cops jitters

Gurgaon, October 26
The police personnel here are alarmed over the murder of a shopkeeper and native of village Fazilpur near here, falling in Sohna assembly segment of the district, as those accused are said to be workers from outside Haryana.

The police have registered a case involving the workers who hail from West Bengal. They were associated with a contractor and employed for construction work.

Some persons have been rounded up in connection with the murder which took place in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. The body was found on the outskirts of Fazilpur.

The reason for the murder is said to be a dispute between the shopkeeper and the accused.

The shopkeeper is said to have been pressing on them to clear the dues. The death appears to have been caused by fatal attacks on the head and neck of the victim. The body had deep bruises and gushes of wounds inflicted by sharp-edged weapons.

The police are alarmed over the development as this is perhaps the first time that the crime appears to have been conspired and implemented by migratory workers who form part of the burgeoning floating population of this district. The labour force is often

meted out harsh treatment by the employers, especially those engaged in construction work. With the construction activities touching new heights in the district, the labour force is on the trajectory of exponential growth.

Cong to table proposals on relocation of units
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 26
The Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today reiterated that her government was committed not to allow industries to be moved and would present suggestions to the Union Ministry of Urban Development to resolve the issue of relocation of industries from non-conforming areas.

The Chief Minister, her Cabinet colleagues and Members of Parliament from Delhi today met and hammered out certain suggestions which, she told mediapersons later, would be presented to Union Urban Development Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad tomorrow.

“The suggestions, if accepted, will remove the apprehensions about the relocation of industrial units and the subsequent unemployment of workers … we are a responsible government and will take care of the industry and labour,” she said.

According to the Supreme Court order, the industrial units in non-confirming areas are to be relocated from next month onwards. “It is a delicate situation, and we are all concerned about the issue being politicised,” she said.

She denied that BJP leader Madan Lal Khurana’s homecoming and his taking up the cause of industrial workers would have any effect on the government’s stand. “We are not worried about Mr Khurana coming back to Delhi politics,” she said.
